In the long term, a couple of years down the road after most of the population has died, sure. But in the first 6 months, I don't think anyone is going to be thinking about infrastructure improvements (like setting up solar power subsystems) if people are still killing each other or if the event that caused it all turned out to be zombies or hostile aliens or a plague or something like that. In the critical first weeks, I still think nobody would likely know what's going on unless there was maybe an air force/army base nearby and they could still get news there (due to aircraft arrivals spreading news of conditions from elsewhere).

At that point, wouldn't it make more sense to just take over abandoned broadcasting stations and get those functional?

Spent many years as a kid in a candle lit 500 square foot room/house with 6 of us living through brutal minus 50 weather with zero power amd money eating moose and thawing snow for water etc. Hard times make u survive and grow up quick and thats half why im bitter over the petty sh it in societies "movements" (like oppressed women in canada lololol).

Lol. You can easily not tell people what you have and just keep to yourself. When you are sitting pretty in your property you have a pretty good chance of holding down the fort against a couple of people attempting to break in. It isn't like they'd burn your house down to kill you since they need the chit you have inside. Also unlikely that a big group will try to rush your home. Drop 1 or 2 before they get to the door and just let them know the first one to open the door dies no matter what. See who chooses to be the first one in after that.

As someone who has grown up hunting and crossed the country twice (foot / bicycle) ... I have really no worries about sustaining myself.

BUT

The big problem in an apocalyptic situation is other human beings. It is absolutely staggering how many people from all levels of modern society are completely unprepared and incapable during a situation like that. Watching people go ape chit during hurricane Harvey in Houston was an eye-opening experience for me. Soooo many people (even those in higher class neighborhoods) literally sat around waiting for the government/someone to come save them. So a few things are going to happen very quick:

1. These people are going to die real quick and/or drown you (figuratively) with them.
2. Groups of marauders are going to form looking to prey on the #1's
3. Those not in groups #1 or #2 are eventually going to turn to panic mode and resort to anything (killing) to survive.

Your best bet in a situation like this is to stay clear of cities and link up with like-minded people. You might be a survivor but if you try go it alone ... somebody/some group is going to wreck your world.


Interesting thing i learned...

1. Most people that are Mormon have something like 3 years of food supplies for such a situation.

2. Those redneck swamp mofos from the south have it figured out. They single handedly saved thousands of people in Houston with their survival skills. It's people like this (and the tribal people of the rain forest) that will be the last ones standing.

The church supports this, but I don't think the majority of people have that stored in their homes. In Salt Lake City they have a massive grain silo to feed their people with (and they do keep it rotated/fresh somehow). They're pretty close knit and would probably do ok in a bad situation. Would be nice to have a large group that cares about you, but that juice ain't worth the squeeze. Mormon church is like 2-3 hours long, and if you don't show up, you better have a reason why.

One of my coworkers that was Mormon was excited to talk to me after my long distance hiking trip that i quit work for. On the way back after eating lunch he started trying to "convert" me (i guess he felt like i was open to it at that point in time). I basically said no thanks. After that he hardly spoke to me again. Was interesting. Went from being a friend / possible convert ... to basically an outcast / not worthy of his time anymore.

I have a greenhouse and still have some tomatoes etc growing and a couple of rainwater tanks.

Once the veg has all gone the family cat would be next on the menu.

The best and most hardened of these guys will start looking for better areas to plunder and they will follow groups of people into the wilds, inc Alaska. Winter is your only salvation but how many of those would you survive up there?

Films about dystopian futures never make sense to me. In reality the people would be starving yet in films they're full of life and roaming about in the open wasting energy by messing with other people for fun. I think people would actually be much more covert and peaceful.

They wouldn't want to risk injury as without medical care they'd be risking their life with every encounter. They'd avoid conflict. I remember watching one such film where a character lived in a hut in the woods where he grew his own food. One day a group of men arrived and stole everything he had. It was pretty dumb because they men were swaggering about, swinging axes, and laughing as they approached him. In effect being a big, fat target for other roaming nutters. If society did collapse I think people would band together for protection and those who did live on the margins wouldn't be brazen punks terrorising others. They'd be like foxes. Moving by night. Scavenging. Avoiding confrontation. Not doing mad max style BS. One cut and they could die from infection.

They wouldn't want to risk injury as without medical care they'd be risking their life with every encounter. They'd avoid conflict. I remember watching one such film where a character lived in a hut in the woods where he grew his own food. One day a group of men arrived and stole everything he had. It was pretty dumb because they men were swaggering about, swinging axes, and laughing as they approached him. In effect being a big, fat target for other roaming nutters. If society did collapse I think people would band together for protection and those who did live on the margins wouldn't be brazen punks terrorising others. They'd be like foxes. Moving by night. Scavenging. Avoiding confrontation. Not doing mad max style BS. One cut and they could die from infection.
That's probably true after 2 or 3 years. But most people are very ignorant about that stuff, and also monumentally stupid. You think the same person who's out there tonight herp-derping down the highway in the left lane with their lights off is going to know that a minor infection can kill you?
