In case no one noticed the altcoin market is kind of exploding and has been for about a month to 6 weeks. I'm assuming when that starts to drop off then BTC will be on the move.

PS just watching some of these coins day over day gaining 20% or 40% Im amazed I've read some of you held coins like OMG from 1$ to 28$ and never sold. That's insane. a 500% gain chart is one that screams GTFO. You guys held 2800% gains and part way on the downturn weren't like "ya I made enough return?" I get greed but damn.
I woke up this morning still breathing. Might as well take advantage of it.

What do you mean by this? The below is a graph of the Crypto Market Cap minus Bitcoin (So the Alt-coin market cap) over the last 2 months (14/Aug to 14/Oct).

2 Months ago - 95 Billion
6 Weeks ago - 114 Billion
1 Month ago - 90 Billion
Today - 93 Billion

I legitimately can't tell what you mean. Do you mean exploding upwards? Or downwards? Or are you being sarcastic and saying it has barely moved? Or are you referring to the 7 day period where it hovered around 85 billion (briefly dropping to ~80) and it now being 93 billion as exploding? Srs.

I'm not trying to call you out, I'm legitimately trying to understand your perspective. Sometimes it can seem as though we're looking at completely different markets when looking at the same data it seems.

I feel the same looking back now, but I really never saw a 90% crash coming like it did. It seemed mainstream was just catching on and believed in the OMG team with Vitalik as an advisor, and really thought they would hit their target dates of Plasma release and staking by last summer. I got into crypto to make millions. Sounds stupid now I guess, but what got me into crypto was a guy on another forum who bought ETH at $1. He bought 10,000 of them and sold at $300. I really thought OMG was my best possible chance and was willing to hold through all the dips, but this dip was beyond anything I ever pictured. Guess I'm a dumb ass, but now I might as well just keep holding now till the next bull market.

I'm not trying to call anyone a moron we're all here to make money. Just saying maybe one of the biggest lessons we can all learn is taking profit when things look way too good ha. And cut losses quicker.

Also to whoever above take a look at most of the alt coins over on binance. Look at charts in 1 day candles and zoom way out. I think sometimes perspective to what's moving where cant just be told by total market cap. In the past month theres btc, eth, bcc, and Ltc have gone down about what 10-20%? Theres a few coins every day almost hitting 50% of their ATH's on binance. I'm still sitting out just always trying to feel around what's going where

me too man. when i started out i was using jack chit.

but phuck, if i even put 1,000 into dovu. that would have been 10k right there

i did very well here. icx, wtc, dovu, nexus are just a few to start..we're talking 10X on all of them at least. after i got stuck in the bitcoin gold fork i got fuken wrecked. i said i wouldn't get stuck again, so i kept trading in and out..

as things were going very well in january i had pulled my money out. but after the first wreckage the market responded really quickly which signaled that it was healthy to me. for instance, icx had been trading at 11 or 12 dollars really strongly and during the first plunge it fell down to like 6 dollars something. but the next day it had already bounced back to 11 something. the market had been green for 3 months or whatever it was so i didn't want to miss out. think i got in at 10. the bitcoin futures really fuked with chit as that day was a massive change and happened after

well, long story short. i was finally working with a decent amount and now all of my chit is stuck high because i took it out and put it back in up fairly high.

it's all casino money though. ive made far more than ive put in, but i have to see like 10X to break even on wtc and chit

Holding isn't all that bad an idea, think of these scenarios trading 2 BTC bullrun cycles (inc text wall, go to summary for results). Assume max tax bracket of 45% (as it is in Aus). In both scenarios consider I have 10K USD to spend, I've bought BTC in July 2017 = 2.5k each BTC, my initial 10k = 4 btc.
Scenario 1
Now let's say I happen to sell all my BTC near the peak (lol) Dec 2018, my 4 BTC = 76k. Capital gain = 66k.
Tax to pay 2017-2018 fiscal 66k * 45% = 29.7k. All up incl. my initial I keep 46.3k, for a total ROI of 4.63x. Now assume I don't make any trades this financial year and I wait for the next bull cycle next financial year and I'm a savant trader and buy the absolute low, spend all my 46.3k on the BTC low ~6k in Aug 2018.
BTC hodled pre-next BTC bullrun = 7.71 BTC
Next BTC bullrun high = 40k per BTC In june 2019, I sell it all 7.71 BTC * 40k = 308k
Tax paid fiscal 2018-2019 = (308k - 46.3k) * 45% = 117.7 k, I pocket 190k, for a ROI (using 10k initial, not 46.3k) = 19x ROI

Scenario 2
Now imagine I hodled through the downturn until now as I'm not a savant trader but recognise every future bullrun exceeds prices of the last and I decide to sell on the next bullrun top. Let's say this next bullrun ends June 2019, I sell near the peak at 40k, 4 BTC x 40k = 160k.
160k - 10k initial = 150k capital gain.
Tax paid = 45%/2 (2 = 50% CGT discount > 1 year hold) * 150k = 33.75k tax to pay, all up I earn = 126k, for a total ROI = 12.6x

Summary
Comparing the 2 scenarios, if you were the best trader ever and were lucky, between 2 bull cycles and scenarios you've earned ~50% more (64K) by going scenario 1 over scenario 2. The likelihood however of picking all those tops and bottoms in scenario 1 is probably beyond 95% of BTC investors. Hodling as shown in scenario 2 still gives great returns and is much easier to time, instead of potentially panic selling near lows and exacerbating the issue of lower $ sale + tax repercussions. Id say picking scenario 2 is probably the better option for most long term investors.

The front page of binance eth and btc pairs has 52 coins that outpaced the growth of the top 5 market cap coins yesterday. Re read that and tell me that btc is going anywhere today. Or tell me it's not (at least for today ha) alt season.

To answer that one guys question, I dont think mrc was talking about overall alt market cap. He's talking about a few select coins that have pumped 200 to 500 percent and it started with xrp. The latest is wabi. I know there was a guy in here that liked wabi. Another is MDA. Look at the daily. That's not your typical PnD. People are buying, just not btc.

Man that tether difference is growing daily. I guess if you were going to kill tether without it destroying the market, 0.25% per day is one way to do it

That's exactly my point. There's crazy amounts of buying in the alt market. You could literally throw a dart on hourly consolidation on any of the top 10 growers over a 24 hour period and make 5% by getting in and out. Meanwhile I haven't traded eth in maybe 10 days because that thing is flat as fuk ha. It would have to shoot to 300 in 24 hours from under 200 right now for me to have the same easy trading thats going on over at binance.

EDIT: as of today I'm keeping a real close eye on POA. Do I know what that project is? no. Do I care? no. What I do know is binance is playing chitcoin carousel right now and that one looks like it's at the start of its move ha.

thing is that during a bull market and alt season there's nowhere to reinvest your coins, they all pumped 500%+ in a short amount of time and the rare ones that haven't are obviously at the bottom of the chit-tier projects, then again at one point ripple made 36000% gains in a year (yeah you read that right) - here the important part is not which projects you're in, but how you manage your risks, i.e. getting out into dollars/tether when a reversal becomes apparent

I think when most alts are pumped is when the ico season begins, where you invest in an ico just to sell it right after listing for a 50-200% gain

I just watched a coin pump 20% in 4 minutes with a volume of 55,000 ETH over the past day. I'm not trying to make 200% gains. I'm trying to make 0.5-1% at a time. Like I've mentioned before I've made more money in this disastrous month than I have over the past 8. In a completely "flat" market. I truly believe if you don't try to hit home runs and just work the market like Novocain (slow and steady wins the race) there's easy money everywhere. I'm never going to catch a fat green candlestick and I'm ok with that. I'm also never going to take a steep red dilly in the pooper again.

Everything is up 5% in alts since I posted that. ha. Like I said you can literally throw darts right now. Zoom out on the charts on the 1 day timeframe. Look for a chart that hasnt even come close to sniffing a bowl formation. Zoom in on half hour to 2 hours time frames. Pick one that has rising volume with shrinking volume on profit taking. It's literally a joke right now.

EDIT: the MDA chart is still printing hilarious daily green dillys. up almost 600% I believe in the past week.

EDIT EDIT: I'll bet anyone a tub of whey protein isolate in the next 6 hours MOD/ETH goes up at least 15%. oh nose. no biggie. market took another poop. alts expected to join the party

I'm looking to liquidate 75% of my stock, other securities portfolio (my full net worth apart from real estate) and put a portion (almost 25-30%) of it into Bitcoin, ethereum and ripple to prep for recession. Am i retarded? Wut do? I am also tempted to buy vaults and keep the cash in my basement

In crypto overnight is an eternity. Until I see an overwhelming change in sentiment. I don't want any part of Holding.

MDA literally won't stop this is unreal. Up 50% since midnight.

If you wouldn't bring the money to a casino. Don't put it in crypto.

CRYPTO IS GAMBLING. and don't be a turd and create a fake profile to say something. We can have a civil conversation. I would never in my life recommend that anyone I know invest in crypto. I'm doing it with a very small amount of money and understand the risks. Someone asking if they should liquidate their portfolio and put in this is clinically insane.

edit: the only one who's not really trying to have a civil discussion is you loll.. calling me a turd whatnot, im just stating something, relax
I know through text it's hard to catch demeanor. I meant it like "don't be silly". I just don't want some guy who apparently doesn't understand how much these markets move to put the cornerstone of his portfolio into really any crypto ha. It's his choice, but I surely wouldn't condone it.

Trading is a form of gambling. You stand to lose money, thus by definition it is. Doesn't matter what the instrument you're trading is.

It is different from pulling a lot machine because the odds are not fixed. It is more akin to poker and other games where you're playing other people instead of the house.

Are you comfortable with losing 80% of what you invest? It isn't unfathomable that Bitcoin could drop to $2,000.

Are you aware of what happened to Gold during the 2008 stock market crash? It crashed with the market, and I suspect BTC would likely do the same.

Will the government (via QE) print markets out of deflationary scenarios in favour of inflationary scenarios? Probably.

Nobody can tell you what you should do, as nobody knows your psychological risk profile, or understanding of markets or the assets you're investing in.

Decent shot at btc going to ~4.3, also a decent shot at this being the bottom. I dunno if btc will do well in a recession but neither does anyone else since it hasn't gone through one yet. Ultimately though this chit is magic internet money so don't put anything in you'd realllly mind losing a lot of.

There's a combo of stuff holding price above ~5.8 (some high TF ema/ma, macro fib retraces, general horizontal support lvl/orderblock) so if it breaks it'll prob be nasty

On the weekly, 100EMA supporting underneath price (yellow), 100MA at ~5.6 (purple), 55EMA and 50MA are above price (orange and blue)

Fib retrace pulls from the 3 green arrow origins all lay more or less on top of eachother (hnnng), 70.5% is one used a lot in forex and btc historically visits the 786 on macro retraces which could potentially line up with that trendline months from now for a joocy af long.

Or it holds here and bores us to death with lifeless ranging for another 6-9 months before starting another run.

Or it just helicopter rides to it's death since ya know, magic internet money...

Oh also the RSI has been bouncing gently off a crucial horizontal level, really needs to gain some altitude
