and again, that's your experience. I can cite my experience of living in San Diego and seeing hundreds of pits throughout my time here and only ever having seen one attack, while I've seen multiple attacks from other breeds within the same breeds, or across all the breeds. But that doesn't matter much.

a muzzle law on one breed is ridiculous when they aren't even the strongest or fastest breed.Should we keep black males handcuffed because they commit crimes at a higher rate? No one has answered this question yet it goes along the same line of thinking.
should we assume all Hispanics are Mexican and illegal immigrants?
should we assume all Asians are straight As students and their grandparents work collecting soda cans?

we shouldn't make assumptions and act up or expect things from them but such is life.
assumptions are made because large members of such groups actually fit such descriptions.

In that same source the CDC listed several dog breeds or groups of breeds which were denoted as 'vicious breeds' that made up virtually all violent attacks. Those were the breeds listed in the table:

"Pit bull"
Rottweiler
German shepherd
"Husky"
Alaskan malamute
Doberman Pinscher
Chow Chow
Great Dane
St. Bernard
Akita

Personally, I see no problem with regulating or restricting ownership of all of these breeds. What I mean by that is you should have to go through some sort of training or competency evaluation and not be a convicted felon.

watch how both ownership and violent attacks of pit bulls would drop off the table if you did that. Probably rottweilers, too.
Never seen anyone with a straight face claim that huskies were a vicious breed.

They are very smart, rambunctious, and naturally curious dogs. Their one big problem is that they love people. They would just as soon lick a burglar all over his face, than alert the homeowner that a burglary was in progress.

It looks like the people who claim huskies are dangerous are a law firm in Philadelphia who looked at the period between 1979 and 1998 (more than 20 years ago). I don't know the details of those attacks, but those dogs may have been abused, part wolf, or part of a pack attack, or completely misidentified. Don't get me wrong... huskies have the strength and tenacity to be a formidable opponent if they were trained to attack, but it's so out of character for their personalities that the ones who show even the slightest bit of aggression will stand out in comparison to almost any others you've ever met. Of course if you mess with them while they are eating or something like that, you can get them to snap at you, like any dog would.

BTW, some landlords don't like huskies because they are escape artists and will chew up walls and door frames trying to get out (they need a lot of exercise and go crazy with boredom if locked inside all day), not because they are a aggressive breed that may attack someone.

Huskies are great dogs, but you need to live in the suburbs or a rural area where they have room to roam. An exhausted husky is a happy husky. City life is not meant for them.

so answer the question then. because my answer to all 3 questions is No. if your answer is No as well, then you shouldn't be advocating the ban and destruction of a lesser intelligent being that is typically acting on instinct. Otherwise you're being hypocritical, acting on assumption in one way but not in the other.

Huskys are very commonly known to be difficult dogs to handle. Not necessarily aggressive, but bitey, and pack based. In that if they feel you are not a leader, they will run all over you. And instinct means that the leader of the pack is in control. If a dog feels like it is in control, it will have no problem biting you to put you in the place it thinks you should be in.

The "dangerous" label comes from their size and potential for damage, not how often they attack. That would be aggression. And anyway, he's just going of what the CDC said

Zack, I think it comes down to ownership. Since the number of trash people owning a pit far outweighs the responsible ones, its probably better to ban the breed. But ur right, pits may not be the problem.

I don't wish for pitts to be destroyed. but all those *******s who own them because "cool" or "badass" dogs should be castrated or be ban from owning dogs.

and start treating such dogs as more than just a pup. fees and registration of those dogs followed by required training and background check of future owners should filter out the wrong people

I completely agree it comes down to ownership, barring a mental issue with the dog, or severe abuse in their life previously causing them to be generally distrustful of humans. As much as it sucks, some dogs should just be put down. But I don't believe for a sec that all pitbulls are inherently violent and aggressive. And nothing proves it despite how firmly miscers seem to believe it.

yup, you're not wrong. I know you didn't advocate, was just saying generally. but yeah a big problem with dog ownership is people get them for looks or image, not because it fits their lifestyle or helps them with service/job.

and yeah, like jacob and i discussed last page, larger dog breeds with more potential for damage should certainly be restricted to some degree. It's not the dog's fault some scumbag chose them because they had the potential to do more damage, but we don't need to leave those dogs so susceptible to being taken advantage of for that.

Pits aren't only world champs when it comes to biting and killing people, they also win the title when it comes to livestock (sheep, goats, horses, cows, etc.). On top of that, they also kill the majority of dogs and cats that where killed by dogs as well.

Other dogs my have nastier bites, or a more aggressive demeanor, but all those other dogs will bite you...pits deliberately try to kill you. They may not strike as often, but 100% of the time that they do, their intent is to kill.

We don't need that in society. Sorry, but it is true.

but that's just your opinion based of news stories, unclear statistics, and anecdotal evidence.

What is true is you're advocating the elimination of an entire breed based off the wrongdoings of a few. How many pits exist? How many actually kill people?

I've gotten in between dog fights where pitbulls were involved. The pitbulls have always been easier to separate. But of course this doesn't mean much because it's my own anecdote, and people will still post vids of pitbulls latching on, or talk about how they are so determined they will die before they let go, despite most having never seen it in person.

there's a lot of blanket statements being thrown around ITT. I don't disagree that there are some idiots who will post pics of their pits with kids, but honestly there's no difference between that and posting any other dog with their kids. Either the dog is being supervised and they're taking a calculated risk, or the dog is not being supervised and left to it's own devices. Breed doesn't matter, almost any dog can kill a small child quickly and any smart person would know better than to leave their child in such a vulnerable position around any dog.

I think you are being a bit naïve by thinking that any other dog can compare to a pit.
a pit was created and bred for such ferocity and aggressiveness (as most dogs that were bred for a purpose) you cannot compare a lab bite to a pit bite.
is all anecdotes? yes. but there is no comparison.
would you rather be attacked by a full size male lab or a full size male pit? anecdotes aside.

Just a week ago. I'm running with my parents labrador. (Luckily my lab is pretty muscular and fit) a loose pit mix and loose husky (was in front yard of some idiots who didn't have an electric fence up) anyways. Both dogs run to my dog. Sniff him. Of course the pit lunges at my dog. I kick the dog as hard as I can and my dog pushes it away. Owner comes running. Grabs dog by collar. I pick up my dog and yell at owner. That breed is dangerous

I also wouldn't leave a 12 year old unsupervised with the blind, 12yo mexican hairless at my house, or the frail 9yo italian greyhound. It's strictly a safety thing for me, not breed issue.

How they view humans is taught case-by-case, and isn't inherent to the breed. One pitbull can be trusting, another can be vicious and ready to maul anyone who crosses their paths.

I'd rather be attacked by a full grown male pitbull, considering true American pit bull terriers and their respective counterparts don't usually grow over 60lbs unless they're fat, while labradors typically reach up to 80lbs. Pitbull has a stronger bite force, but they'll be easier to control.

Plenty of dogs are dangerous, yet no one is calling for rottweilers to be banned from ownership and culled from the planet. There's something to be said for fairness. Or at least I thought.

I agree with plenty of miscers that these dogs shouldn't be kept around kids, or should have a more stringent vetting process to acquire one for ownership. At least I can take the time to discuss and debate with people respectfully.

Lol.

But srs the the only pitbulls I've ever seen were owned by super trashy low income people. Idk what it is that attracts such **** people to the breed.

Even so if you divide it by half they're still about equal. Plus the stats don't account for any other factors that might play into a fatal attack.

Like I said, I'm not saying they aren't dangerous dogs, but they aren't the only one so this witch hunt for pitbulls and pitbull owners is ridiculous.
idk but to me the chart says 64% of total deaths relating to dogs was caused by Pittbulls and you qouted the chart yourself.

Pittbulls deaths 64% and/or 254.... 64/4 (16%) and 254/4 (63.5)
Rotties deaths 11% and/or 43

which once again, the pittbull comes way on top.
I know nothing factual but only tell the truth

An OAP has been jailed over a savage dog attack on a schoolboy who still has nightmares and needs counselling because of the horrific ordeal.

Traumatised Lewis Barkley was left with 17 bite wounds after a pair ofStaffordshire Bull Terriersset upon him as he played football with a friend in a park.

The 11-year-old was rushed to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, where he needed gas and air, plus morphine, to ease the pain.

He went on to have four hours of surgery and hundreds of stitches. And he burst into tears when he saw his scars for the first time.

Wow, stabbing and then shooting him after clearly there was no chance for the kid was a bit extreme and cruel. Like, the damage was already done, let it go.

I can see why that'd be confusing.

Any dog is dangerous, that's true. If you deny that, feel free to that opinion but I won't agree with you. Dangerous in the sense that they have the capacity to cause injury or even death.

What comes down to ownership, as far as what I was trying to convey, is their propensity to attack, or their likelihood to become aggressive over things that don't warrant an appropriate level of aggression. IE snapping and mauling a child who was tugging on their tail, or how to properly behave around another dog that is circling behind them to sniff their but.

As for the 3rd post, I was making that statement in reference to their propensity to attack, not the danger they can cause. I completely agree that pitbulls are capable of more damage, but I firmly believe that their threshold for when they should cause that damage is determined by how their owner has raised and treated them, as well as initial life experiences with other humans and animals, aka learned behavior and not inherent. If that makes sense.

Hopefully that cleared it up but if you have any other questions feel free

i blame backyard breeders more than anything. pits have been over and poorly bred, then these breeders sell/give dogs to people who have no business owning one
