It didn't have to be junk food. It could have been steak, fruit, etc. Only fuking idiots turned it into meaning eating treats or junk food.
that might not have been the original intended meaning, but it's the meaning NOW. it's evolved. Aragon, Norton, Helms and others have already discussed this.

progress isn't impeded by some junk food here and there if macros are accounted for. LOL

it's no different from a cheat meal, other than what you call it.

i can't believe some people still don't understand such a basic concept.
That's how I eat anyways, it is called counting calories and macros. That's what it has always been called. IIFYM is a meme.

If it works so well why don't pro bodybuilders eat pizza/burgers/junk food when cutting for contests?

eating clean trumps a good workout

i know people who stopped lifting, but maintained a clean diet high in raw fruits and veggies, etc and still maintained a shredded physique.

Satiation... They are on a severe calorie deficit and 800 calories in "Burger" is hard to make up for in that situation. Beyond that you still need to hit your protein macros.

You can only move things so much and hit the macros. For most it just means they carefully prep breakfast and lunch and then don't need to be a fickle b*tch at dinner.

uh, YES.

why are you making the assumption the word treat exclusively means junk food? a steak can be a treat, white rice can be a treat. a treat is anything you normally don't have for whatever reason.

as i was saying, enjoy a treat if you want.

Because people at that level require much higher levels of proteins/carbs/fats than the average 180lb man. They would not be able to hit their macro goals with junk in it. Also, there is a massive difference between losing weight, and getting competition shredded.

Also, I'm a retard and thought we were talking about IF for some reason, and not IIFYM.

I hear you but when these guys start cutting they are eating a lot more than 800 cals and aren't adding in chit foods for a reason, not because they can't fit it in.

A competition cut is regularly in the 2500 Cal zone. Of that we are looking at 1 Gram per pound of protein in Body-weight or roughly 800 calories in straight protein. Then we have the carb and fat targets.

Hitting that requirement AND eating a burger AND being full. Is borderline impossible and that is why they don't do it. (Very often)

Ok, what I wonder then is why do some pro bodybuilders and people in prep insist on getting say carbs exclusivelly from complex carb sources and then say, separate protein sources into good or bad. That really confuses me since I don't understand how does that make any diference. Obviously you don't want your carbs to come from sugars but other than that does it maybe have some effect on your energy levels in the gym? Also I understand that the smaller the amount of calories you can eat per day the cleaner you will have to eat to hit your protein goals,etc...

Also as far as satiety goes that seems just a mental game which will be an inevitable part of a cut anyway especially if prepping for a show.

Most people (bodybuilders) are bro-scientists and follow that accordingly. I mean BCAA's still have a following in bodybuilding despite it being a giant load of chit.

The mental game IS EVERYTHING with the cut. The brain does not work right when you are at 6% BF and it makes rational decision making hard. IIFYM is everything. You will find that when you are on maintenance or bulking it is very forgiving. When you are on an extended cut all it does is give a tiny bit of choice because you still have to hit those macros and not want to cannibalize your friend.

I don't get the complex vs simple Carb thing except you digest simple carbs faster so might not leave you feeling full for as long or as nutritious/micro nutrients that wont really effect body composition but will effect overall health and wellness. And for protein as long as it is a complete protein with the full spectrum of aminos it doesn't matter.

"clean" food means easily digested and assimilated without much stress on the organ system. deep fried food is a lot more work than steamed/baked/sauteed food which makes it "dirty".

Foods can have other affects on your body that aren't directly related to body composition, but indirectly can affect your ability to regulate it, and when you get to that level everything has to be even more precise. Satiety, energy levels, mood, water retention, etc. all become exponentially more important the higher level you compete and the closer to stage you get. I'm not familiar with the details of getting to that level, but I imagine sodium intake starts to become majorly important in addition to the macros, etc. Some of it is just the psychology of it which can have a huge impact as well, again, especially at those levels.

I've also heard that towards the end of prep IIFYM and a simple deficit isn't enough as your body gets accustomed to the deficit and you can't just keep decreasing your calories or upping cardio to no end, so people resort to carb cycling as to keep the body guessing and losing the last bits of fat when already extremelly low bf.

My understanding is that the carb cycling is to get your performance out of a work out. Putting in a good workout when you are carb depleted at end of prep is hard.

However, if your goal is to compete just hire a winning coach in your area and listen to his bro-science. It isn't the most "right" information in the world, but they will be able to adapt your plan better than you will your first run through. If you are not competing IIFYM is just the most sustainable way to to be able to go out to a restaurant with your friends after work.

If I ever did compete down the line I'd definetly have to hire a coach as I have no Idea how to peak, manipulate water and sodium, carb load, sugar and so on. But yeah been doing IIFYM since I started lifting and can't complain so far.

Just because you are incapable of realizing that "eating what ever you want" when you are constrained by Cals, Protein, Carbs, and Fats.

Is and always has been very similar to an 80/20 diet. This is not "New" this is a fact of life. I cut on 2400 calories and once you throw the required 800 cals of protein everything else is tight. Eating pizza and then STILL hitting protein macros while staying under your calories for the day immediately turns into "80/20". When you are around 3k it is easier to throw in a snickers bar, but lets be realtea. Most people are only tracking their food religiously when they are on a cut.
