Young bros, two factors, first, most people just don't GAF about lifting, fitness, whatever. Just not something they'd ever do. Ok, that's about 75% of the people, then secondly, for the other 25%, as you get older your available time declines with each new life change. High school to college to working young adult to married with kids, the amount of time you can spend purely on yourself gets less and less.
For the dudes and gals inclined to fitness in college, when they get their first job, all of a sudden their official time commitment goes from maybe 5 hours/day classes to 10+ hours with job/commute. Now they get married and have kids and all of a sudden their free time from 6 - 10 is now largely gone as well.
To routinely stay into fitness one has to make it the number 1 free-time priority and all of the other stuff you want to do (watch tv, cook, misc, etc) needs to be built around it with the few hours you have. To most it's just not that big a priority.
Take me for example, when my kids were young, I left the house at 7am, back at 6pm, help wife with dinner and hang with kids until 9pm or so. By that time I've had zero free time and I'm tired so lifting took extreme self discipline. I finally solved the puzzle by lifting early in the morning before work but I essentially sacrificed an hour of sleep or so to work it in while maintaining all of my other responsibilities.
But, the older you get the more important it is.

I fall off the workout wagon now and again but generally try to hit the gym 3-5/week.
So, I work out but...
... as you get older, your priorities shift. Your looks matter less.
... as you get older, relationships can take a lot. Wives, children, even caring for older parents.
The gym is one of the first sacrifices— sadly, friendships are also on the chopping block. I’ve maintained them, too, but it takes a lot of active effort.

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Adjust the environment. I have an adjustable set of db ranging from 5lbs to 52.5lbs in my office, a ball-bearing ab-roller, will add a door mounted trx and a dip station soon
I don’t care if it looks a bit like a gym (it doesn’t), just gotta organize accordingly.
When i KNOW i will have a long busy day, i take breaks to handle my targeted routine on a maintenance level, this added with my daily 100 push ups, and 50 ab-rollers
Once the dip station comes through i’ll do more calisthenics
It is what it is. People may stare or be surprised at the sight of my workout equipment in my office, but my fitness is more important than the “woah you’re a bit obsessed” response from the 0.5% of people who have an issue with that

This is my 3rd attempt to get into great shape. I'll break it down by age..
1.) When I was 26. I went from 265 to 207 within 6 months and I was in amazing shape. 12%bf. Even smoked cigarettes and drank beer the entire time.
2.) When I was 32. I went from 305 to around 240 and was in decent shape. I played a lot of sports and felt really good. Quit smoking in my 20s but still drank.
3.) Now I'm 38 and I've gone from 295 to 270 and I've plateaued for a month despite working out just as hard as before. Drinking booze immediately adds 10lbs of water retention that sits with me for 48-72hrs.
I'm quickly starting to figure out that fitness at 38 is far less gratifying than before, given the same amount of time and effort. Sure, I feel better, more centered and balanced and sleep better, but the mirror shows pretty much the same as before. So to answer your question, who wants to put in the same time and effort and get a fraction of the results? Nobody.

Wake up at 5AM crew (also asleep by 930 crew). Will typically run on the treadmill as warmup and then get a quick 30-45 min lift in afterwards. I will superset a lot to keep the intensity high and to get in and out quickly. It does not take hours a day to stay in shape and take care of your body. I don't get when people say that "lifting" isn't a priority. It's your body and you only get one. Taking care of it should be on that list of priorities. Have fun getting out of breath when playing with your kids or putting an IPAD in front of them because you are too tired to "play" with them....

Most are lazy and think it's okay to let themselves go like everyone else in their office.
Look at most people 30 and over at the gym. Look at their ring fingers, they usually dont have a ring on or dont have a mark like they had one on. Married people get lazy and fatter which is totally disrespectful to their partners. Single people still have the drive to attract other potential partners.

Yet I made it to the gym at least 4 days a week after work.
I did it so I had a better chance of being around for my kids/family now my grand kids.
I did this because I didn't want to acquire a beer gut and be skinny fat when I aged.
I think I've done very well with this goal.

These days, that same university has a 200 station gym which is constantly busy, and there are dozens of gyms dotted about the rest of the city, with more opening every year. It is universally known that working out benefits you in almost every aspect of your life and if you can't exercise 3x a week because of some lie people keep telling themselves in fear of facing the truth that they are lazy as fuk, then so be it. Doesn't change our lives who actually enjoy working out. Just stop with the excuses that are blatantly irrelevant.
Most of the wealthier people in my area are out at 4-5am cycling in groups for 1-2 hours every morning. Are they choosing "money over exercise?"

The only thing that shocks me is people not making time for 3-4 days during the week to do it.
I go about 6-7 days a week (depending on work factors), I also don't have much going on right now though. However, if I had a busy family schedule, I'd adjust to make 3-4 days a week np. Weekends alone can easily give you an hour a free time, so that gives you 2 days right there.
It's not about getting aesthetic and low BF, but exercising provides a lot more benefits in and of itself that being in shape should be a priority.
Grandpa miscer above has it right. Although he loves lifting, even just going during the week a couple times is more beneficial than not going at all.

After doing this for some time, you either get the work out bug, or you don't. Most people try it and quit when the results take too long, or they hurt from muscle soreness/tightness. Some of us got the workout bug and still love it!

I'm into playing sports but my interest in lifting comes and goes these days. Generally I just do a lot of fasting during the week to stay lean, which immediately puts my physique above like 90% of people my age

Simple answer is most follow the socially acceptable lifestyle. Two in shape people meet, start to date. Dating leads to laziness and complacency because you no longer have to attract someone to fuk. This leads to both people getting comfortable, then they get married and REALLY lose their drive to attract someone. The nail in the coffin is kids, because you literally don't even have time to sleep anymore. It's a vicious cycle that is only escaped by outliers like myself. Literally all of my friends with kids and balding, fat, and empty inside. They live for their children now, and forget their hopes/dreams/desires. Not saying its wrong, but you put your own well being aside when you choose this path in life.

I have pretty bad L4/L5 issues. Lifting helps, particularly when I am smart and go lighter with squats and deads. Strengthening my core has made me feel better.
I have kids and I spend plenty of time with them each and every day.
You are tired because you don't lift, you probably don't sleep right, you probably don't eat right and for many other reasons. If you just want to say it's not important, then say it, but don't lie about being too busy. Anyone can make 30-60 minutes 3 times a week.
Spending some time exercising is a boon to your health, your sleep at night, feeling better, having more energy and other quality of life improvements. You're just too lazy and mentally weak to do it, which is a shame for you because if you did, you would be a better person for it.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
