2019 goal: remove myself from big tech as much as possible

Anyone else? Really sick of their chit quite frankly, weaning myself off slowly. Google is my first target to be completely removed from their eco system by end of Feb.

There are going to be a couple of tough things, I have some 2FA apps I use and WhatsApp especially will be very painful if I get rid of that. Although I am far less invested in big tech then most.

Looking to do the following so far:

All email -> Protonmail
Chrome -> Brave
Google Search -> Duck Duck Go
iPhone -> Lightphone2 (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/light-phone-2)

Netflix -> CANCEL
Dropbox -> Delete
Spotify -> CANCEL
******** -> Delete
Amazon account -> Delete
Google Drive -> Delete
Skype -> Delete
Google Maps -> Stop using
Instagram -> Delete

The hard ones for me

- Office365
- LinkedIn
- Macbook Pro (No idea how to move on from this)
- WhatsApp

Would like more ideas like this to add to my list!

I don't get it, I have a smartphone, and no social media at all. Why not exercise self restraint?
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

If you notice I dont have social media either.

This is not about having problems wasting time sitting on ******** all day. This is about companies I don't like doing questionable stuff with my data. Fuk em.

Im also somewhat of a minimalist so its good to reduce clutter even if it is mental clutter

OP, you should look into setting up your own cloud using something like a Western Digital PR4100. I’m using one and it’s awesome. Tons of useful apps you can install on it and even use it for a media center to watch movies from anywhere.

I cancelled amazon. Not that it makes a difference. I'm sure they still track me and sell info about my mind to people. Amazon and Google/ Alphabet are some of the most evil companies to ever exist.

i think the adoption rate of these things like brave and DDG are so low that they won't actively do anything for fear of drawing attention to them

never heard of protonmail...mirin (had to disable brave's blocking to load the signup page lol)

I can understand and relate to most of what OP said.

However:

Spotify - are you saying you completely dont want any music/music services on your phone? What's wrong with listening to music when commuting/working out?
Smartphone - as someone mentioned, just restrain yourself from social media. Delete the apps. Restrict how much time you spend daily on social apps (iPhone has that feature now with iOS12)
Laptop/MBP - good luck with your miscing on a toaster goals of 2019
Amazon Account - just don't buy chit you dont need.
Dropbox/cloud storage - You can still keep it for non important stuff, maybe few dikpics

Actually Brave's uptake is accelerating at a rapid clip right now, and I believe its going to be bundled in HTC phones too?

Secondly what could they possibly do? pretty sure they cant ban competitors on their platforms

Smartphone - Again this is nothing to do with social media or "restraining myself". This is about removing myself from the apple eco system and simplifying my life
Laptop - Well like I said that is going to be difficult but happy to explore ideas, I dont need to rid myself of everything, its just a goal to work towards
Amazon account - I dont, therefore i dont need it.
Cloud storage - dont really need anything save in the cloud so dont need it (more life admin tidy up)

There is multiple cogs in this. 1. Removing myself from ecosystems of companies i dont like 2. Protecting my privacy 3. Minimalism 4. Removing mental clutter from my life. 5. Im also an anti-technology luddite now

This has nothing to do wit him on instagram all day and cant restrain myself...

Fair enough. In terms of eco systems - I'm what you would call an Apple user. MBP/iPad/Iphone. That being said I dont rely on it and if I were to switch to Android phone/win laptop tomorrow that would require min effort. Getting rid of smartphone completely tho - I rely on it for work (even outside of office hours) so it won't be feasible. But again in terms of reliance on apple/google/microsoft - I'm fluid.

Privacy can be a concern so going protonmail/duckgogo/vpn/onion is a start. But you would need to completely disconnect yourself from the world if you want privacy and it's a rabbit hole. Think about - bank accounts (including any mortgages/loans), utilities (aka off the grid), ssn, tax declarations, etc.
Minimalism - all for it. I'm trying to be a minimalist as well
Mental clutter - again agree 100%
