Guy loses 1.5 Million in the stock market

Not a fan of reddit but ill occasionally look at Wallstreetbets when my buddy sends me a post.

This guy went from a peak around 1.5 million to something like 7,000. He sold naked weekly tilray calls and shorted stitchfix in the mid 30s and got margin called. Hopefully he will get his chit together and make some of it back, hate to see people lose their savings.

When you short a stock you sell an equity for the current price thinking the stock is going to fall and then you buy it back. Sometimes the price can go higher and you run out of margin and have to buy it back for that higher price. In this case stitchfix went from the 30s to the 50s, he ran out of margin and had to buy back the stock. Right now its in the 20s.

A call is an options contract to buy 100 shares at a certain price. If i sell a contract to buy a stock at 50.00 and the price of the stock goes to $55, that contract is worth 100 (number of shares) * $5. If it didnt hit $50 by that timeframe it would expire worthless and you could pocket the money of that contract you sold. In this case, tilray increased in hundreds of dollars/share over a few days.

There is a lot more to it and someone else can probably explain options better (calls/puts). I’m just an EE that invests on the side. I can try and give a better explanation if you want.

Well he could take his 9 grand and buy 3 trailers like ashin...slum lording has to pay something.

If you play stocks like the casino, things arent going to end well. Should have taken his profit and threw it into a safe S&P account and lived off the dividends. Chit just the interest that kind of money throws off could easily provide you with a 80k a year salary (conservatively).

If you want to play options I think the Nasim Taleb strategy definitely works, but you gotta be patient. You can't go putting everything on one short.

I personally will stick to index funds. I don't understand Nasim well enough to invest like him.
