The Dyson interview if anyone cares:

http://m.nautil.us/issue/43/heroes/m...ics-dream-team
(Interviewer): This was also a time when certain scientists were true heroes. Einstein above all, but you also had people like Feynman. Do we still have those kinds of heroes in science today?

(Dyson): I would say they mostly are going into biology now. Biology is moving very fast and so the same kind of people who became physicists in those days now tend to become biologists. Theoretical biology is now becoming much more of a real subject than it used to be, so a lot of people who are really computer scientists are doing biology. The line between mathematics and biology is not so sharp anymore. I would say that’s where the young people are. They’re having the same good times now that we had 50 years ago.

You're correct.

I was interested in psych since I was like 12.

I have been described as a "human bomb defuser" because I hate crazy people and how they cause destruction. I was heavily inspired by the holocaust, stuff I heard about racism growing up, I hate criminals, etc. I also grew up in a poor area and saw many very awesome people destroyed due to poverty and hopelessness. So, I had a strong mission in mind since I was little.

I pursued many degrees and worked my ass off in school and in my jobs. I always and on purpose took the hardest and most dangerous jobs to make a name for myself and get real experience. When I first started I made so little money, sometimes I'd break down and cry in stores because I couldn't even afford a novel.

Now, I'm doing well and in about a year things will get way better.

When people see my resume and heard all I've done, they're very impressed. In Philly, people used to call me, the living legend, and it was quite a feeling. One time, I was in front of the main mental health building for Philly and people came out and saw me. I heard someone shout, "It's The Adlerian! He's a living legend", and they all gather to speak to me. I thought it was some kind of insult, like sarcasm. I said so, and the one guy said they were all dead serious and wanted to talk to me. I felt faint to be honest.

On the negative side, women do not like men who do this kind of work. Women don't like men they believe are "nicer" than them. And, most women do not believe you will "work your way up" in your job, and that's a very terrible negative.

So, my point in all of that is that if you want to do very well in a psych career, you have to REALLY be prepared for battle. It's an adventure.

My definition of an adventure is that it's not fun, but is exciting mixed with fear, tears, and very bad, bad times.

About a year ago, I got a little frustrated and decided to try sales. People were excited to hire me but I found it so boring I went back to psych. I've had an amazing time, and would never want to do anything else. I'm extremely proud of myself and all the good and exciting things I've done.

I view most others as boring children, but of course I love those I love anyway.

Only as a PHD.

Bachelors degree puts you competitive for your local starbucks
Masters might let you be a school councilor at your local HS.

What you're talking about is actually pseudoscience.

Thoughts are what drives human behavior.

Thoughts are an individual phenomenon that exists in each person's brain. There will never because any way to change or access that phenomenon other than getting the operator of the storage device to do it themselves.

"the line between mathematics and biology is not so sharp anymore"......

Biology might use a little bit of mathematics, maybe in genetics or whatever physical models, or as you say computational theory. But to say the line between biology and mathematics is blurred is a ridiculous statement. Biology is not mathematics. Biology is not concerned about whether pi is an irrational or transcendental number, whether there are an infinite number of primes of the form (n^2+1), or whether there is a general solution of the quintic equation.......all interesting mathematical statements. The above is not a great interpretation of mathematics. It appears to be using mathematics in the more mundane sense.

IMO a large part of this is hormonal. So many behaviors and thought processes can be changed through them.

Biological Research:

I saw this mentioned.

I lived in Denver for a few years and made friends with this girl at the gym. She, had to be a genius of a very high caliber. I never met a woman that smart.

Anyway, she was a geneticist who worked for a very well known organization there. She told me that such research is very fraudulent most of the time as a lot of lies must be told to get grant money. That and it is very boring doing hundreds of test on the same sample to see what happens. But, she especially hated lying about results.

Certainly, such research can be amazing, but it sounds like the progress is super slow compared to all the places doing such research.

She eventually quit and like over night got her engineering degree, and I mean in a hot minute she got it. She said she preferred that because she got to make actual things that worked and there was no need to lie as an engineer.

I believe she worked in electricity and enjoyed it thereafter.

You don't know anything about the topic.

A simple way to look at it:

Why are so many black people involved in crime?

Is it hormonal?

No, it's due to beliefs, culture, social messages, etc.

I don’t think that’s quite what he meant. I think he meant it’s not so sharp in the sense that a book by Darwin or Huxley has no math whatsoever. From that perspective we’re far advanced.

Of course bio, and any other science for that matter, doesn’t have anything to do with the meat of math, the stuff after analysis that has no practical application. If all math had practical application, then what would math be able to claim as its own? It wouldn’t be much of an independent discipline.

Psychology isn't really a science and is highly feeling/intuition based so mostly women gravitate towards it. There's a reason even a phd in psychology can't write prescriptions though.

That's completely incorrect.

Women gravitate to psych because it's a helping profession and it makes them feel good to be involved.

However, I have never ever met a female scholar type in psych. They pass classes in school, forget what they learned, do not study after college, and most just give advice.

We need more men who are interested in becoming master of the discipline of psychology.

Also, most of you use the word "science" and I don't think you know what it means.

Science doesn't really apply well to life. It's important to facilitate things, but isn't some kind of key to the universe.

Lmao...."most just give advice"......perfectly illustrating why psychology is not much more than a pseudoscience, built around questionable theories, which are typically either unfalsifiable, or vague enough to pass for something that sounds legitimate. It's funny how much psychology is always trying everything it can to masquerade as legit science, buidling its own jargon, focusing on "studies"......but dont be misled. This field is at its heart the same old pseudoscience that was found in its beginnings, a mere 100 years ago or so, with people like Freud or Adler (namesake of the above). Karl Popper did a fine job illustrating why these theories are not proper scientific theories, and his works are highly recommended. Psychology is what astrology is to astronomy

You're an idiot.

Science has massive amount of fraud. There's been huge scandals.

That doesn't mean science is bad because bad people who are greedy, etc get involved in it.

Same with any field, idiot.

There’s a good Chomsky clip where he basically says psychology is pseudoscience. Uses an analogy. Says before Newton there were always explanations for phenomena like gravity - the apple falls because it seeks its teleological end, its natural resting state, the smoke rises because that is its teleological end etc - that certainly worked to the people then, but now we don’t take those explanations seriously. Psychology likewise is an explanation, it sort of works, but only in the same sterile, woefully inelegant and roughshod way pre-Newtonian physical theories worked.

"You're an idiot"

just lol @ at your response (is this how you respond in all your rebuttals?)- and is this supposed to be epitome of psychology on the misc? Bringing up fraud in science for some weird reason too. One thing is for sure.....there is no evidence of anything scholarly in your posts. Kind of like psychology in general, and the pseudoscience it is.

You would think an advanced degree would include an English class, maybe even a writing class. Sentence structure, and punctuation are the earmarks of the educated
