Any particular reason you chose Nest? I was looking at it, and Blink. Initially looked at Arlo, but like BlueSasquatch said, I saw too many reviews that said they triggered too late.

My biggest worry with the camera system is someone else hacking into the feed, minor concern I suppose, but makes me not want any inside for sure.

there's a cap at 250gb - doesn't specific up or down so I'd bet it's both
that kind of data would probably double or triple my internet bill
have you seen any effect on streaming or anything with that continuous upload?

Yeah, I agree - I'd be surprised if a major ISP like Crapcast didn't count upload towards usage, but I don't recall ever seeing that metric in the account page (guess I should go look), so I got to wondering if the majority of users just don't really upload much data at all made it not worthwhile to bother tracking it for them.

I'd probably prefer to do something wired, but running actual wires would suck some serious chit. Tiny attic would be next to impossible to crawl around in. But ideally I guess I'd look for a wired system that records to HDD (would probably leave set up in the attic) but is accessible via internet with a wifi connection and does push notifications for motion detection. Which system is that? Even then, I don't know what I would do about cameras I want to put on the lower floor, because running wires through the walls to the 2nd story and then the attic = no thanks.

Switching to Fiber has just been absolutely tits. There's never any lag or loading time or buffering for anything, streaming to multiple TV's (we don't have cable), streaming to computer, multiple devices, all while uploading from 6 cameras. I probably wouldn't have added any to the initial 3 cameras on that **** comcast connection and/or I would have had to dumb down the resolution of the cameras instead of using optimal quality setting.
That is something to keep in mind, I have my quality set to the max on every camera which will increase bandwidth but gets the best image of course. So if you had like two cameras, one front and one back, and picked the default middle ground image quality and bandwidth, it would be a lot less than my 6 cranked up. Still...counting downloads, these days 250 gigs goes quick

Speaking of all this stuff, does anyone in here use a Ring doorbell? My button is out and since I have to replace it anyway, I've been kind of wondering about those.

How much is the nest "aware" cloud storage and streaming? Their site says $10/month for 10 days of storage, but is that $10 per camera? Or just a flat $10?
If its per camera then screw that. Also like Farley said if his upload is 750GB a month then screw that too, my ****ty ISP only allows 1TB per month.
I'm more interested in just buying my own power over ethernet IP cameras for like $50-100 each then just using some older PC components to build a server to store like 7 days of video locally and stream it over internet only if I access live stream via my phone.
That would only be like $500 in cameras for me, then just need to buy like $200 of drives for storage and use older PC components that I already have. Oh and $90 for a poe switch

Mine was $100/yr for the first camera and $50/year for each additional, a little over a year ago. So check to see if that comes down for additional cameras after the first

Unless you're out of town for a full week, and realize at the end of the week that you want to check on something from right after you left, I'm thinking most residential users at their primary residence are going to be just as good with 5 days as with 10. Not sure why I got 10 days...mine renew in about a week (first month or so was free I got them around black friday a year ago) so I might just drop down to 5 days at least on some to save some money

My biggest concern with them would be the button mounts perpendicular to the door in what's almost a mini hall for the door. I'm curious how well the 180 degree lens works on them.
Although, I just now found out this exists:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077VF6WFR..._LiQ4Ab1N390S8
which could be a helpful option.

I did not know my damn internet had a data limit. I knew some people's did, but never knew that mine with Comcast did. They never told me... evidently I get 1024GB a month. But I haven't ever even gone over 223GB in a month, so I imagine a camera system wouldn't set me over.

The other thing is I kind of want to sell my house within the next year... or maybe not until 2 or 3 years from now... not sure. But I'm in this limbo now where the thought of spending time and money on any diy setups or and home improvement is not favorable when in the back of my head I keep thinking "meh, I'll probably move within a couple years"

We just decided to sell the house. As soon as possible. I think the blown-up mailbox was the last straw but we've been thinking about it for a while. When you buy a brand new house in a brand new neighborhood, you're taking the risk that it may go up, or it may go down. This was supposed to be a new up and coming neighborhood but it has gone steadily downhill and we're ready to get the fuk outta here. I am also going to stop finishing the basement. Don't think I'll get the right money out of it. We'll call it "semi-finished", ready for your decorating ideas.
I don't think I'll lose money but I was hoping to do better than breakeven after commissions. I'm ready to leave money on the table and just get to a better neighborhood.

Farley (or anyone with a wired camera system), is the installation any more trouble than the wireless ones? Nest cameras look to be what I'm going to want, but how much drilling and chit will I end up having to do?
Will I need Adarus to come over and install this chit for me? Is it something that if you were to move, would be difficult to just take apart and bring with you?

I don't think I'll lose money but I was hoping to do better than breakeven after commissions. I'm ready to leave money on the table and just get to a better neighborhood.

1) My original plan was to be in it for 5-6 years as my first home then when my income increases I would buy in a better location (primarily due to closer proximity to work and shooting range) and a bigger house. I wouldn't overspend on the new house though, I'd scale to new income.
2) It has been over 3 years since I bought it. Income has increased (and continues to do so).
3) Fortunately, the value of my house has increased by 24% since I bought it and is predicted to continue to increase, according to Zillow. Also, there's A LOT of growth in this area of AZ, seller's market right now, freeway is being built about 2 miles from my house, etc.
Had my realtor (family friend) come over to my house back in July and he corroborated this saying he was surprised my house is still in great condition (he said bachelors normally don't do that) and that it would be very easy to sell at Zillow estimate, or higher, during months of March - July. However, he said that he thinks the value will continue to increase dramatically over the next couple of years, at least, so I also kind of want to hold out to potentially get more out of it...
4) I'm worried that reason #3 is a bubble and that we'll hit a recession within the next couple of years. I don't think that a recession will cause the value of my house to fall so low that I'm upside down on the mortgage, but I believe it will fall low enough to where at best I would barely break even on selling after paying realtor commission and other costs.
5) Reason #4 will mean that I can't do reason #1 and will be "stuck" in this house for probably 5-10 more years (allowing for recession to end and house value to recoup) unless I'm willing to just sell at a loss or barely break even which wouldn't make much sense solely for "better location and bigger house" unless I really just HAD to move for a good reason.
Then the last reason why I want to move within the next couple of years, and probably the most salient, is that I want to just have a change of scenery and change up my career field and move to a different state.

Nest cameras look to be what I'm going to want, but how much drilling and chit will I end up having to do?
Will I need Adarus to come over and install this chit for me? Is it something that if you were to move, would be difficult to just take apart and bring with you?

If I were to do my own power over ethernet IP cameras and host the storage myself, then move, I'd just take the cameras and the NAS that I'd build for the storage. I wouldn't bother taking the cheap ass ethernet cable, I'd just tell the buyer "You're all wired up for surveillance cameras". So if just taking the cameras and equipment, that's basically the same amount of work to pack up and move a desktop PC.

Maybe I am wrong though. I'm like quadruple tasking while I check it out.

Not a big deal but any suggestions on how to smooth this dremel/sand job I did for my undercut?

Maybe apply some heat somehow or maybe finer sandpaper?

Maybe apply some heat somehow or maybe finer sandpaper?[/QUOTE]You're going to have to work all the way to about 2,000 grit. That's how the guys who do it professionally get it smooth and glossy.

Definitely second leaving the ethernet cabling if you move, it's cheap enough that I wouldn't fool with ripping it out and then having to patch up any holes you drilled to run it. You could unhook the cameras and controller to take with you, but depending on how far down the road you move you may decide to sell it with the house and buy a new unit depending on how much cameras have advanced at that point.
