The above twitter comments made me think. Not much mind you, but it made me think of the tired rhetoric that is always peddled online. The reasoning given for virtue signaling is always somewhere along the lines of, "How can you defend [criminal acts]?"

1. It is perfectly reasonable to defend an entire gender from discrimination.
2. Society already has ways of punishing/deterring criminal acts, it's called the criminal justice system.

Two parent households, a strong sense of community, and a reasonable standard of living (to raise a family) are actual ways to proactively decrease crime, with factual evidence behind them. But they aren't outrageous enough to spark controversy.

Of course, with society's increased disparity, there is an influx of younger men who find self-esteem and a self image through hyper-sexual means. But the same is happening to women.

Gillette is at risk of becoming uncool. At least with men. Over the last 10 years or so facial hair has come back in style (partly thanks to shows like Game of Thrones, Vikings, etc.) and being clean shaven is associated with older people. So naturally they have to hop on a modern progressive movement. I'm not sure that it will actually work.

I think a lot of people eloquently stated why they didn't like the Gillette commercial and it wasn't blind outrage. The video painted men to be 'guilty by association' in light of bullying, #MeToo, and catcalling/assault on females. The problem is that it came off as disingenuous in this political climate and instead of selling me a product they are attempting to send out a message. I did not purchase Gillette to be patronized for being a man. I believe a lot of men feel this sentiment and it's not the ones who were bullies or men who hurt women, but just regular men trying to navigate this world. To not see the other side and a reason why this could be possibly taken this way given the context is intellectually dishonest at best.

Unfortunately, for a lot of people, especially on the misc, a Vonnegut quote is far too true - in Breakfast of Champions, a character in one of Trout's many books is an alien who has visited earth, and warns his planet about ideas on earth:

My position is clearly that the whole argument is ridiculous.

It's as if we're adults working in a daycare and there are some children arguing over who gets to play with the fire truck first. I say "it doesn't matter guys, you'll both get a turn" and you call me a coward for refusing to pick a side.

See, that's your issue - you're only able to see things as binary: yes or no, black or white, left or right. And that's just how it is, if that's where you're stuck, but you're gonna continue on just being angry and feeling wronged all the time over nothing.
