When I lived there, I made a lot of money for my age, and I’m fortunate enough to work in software.
But It’s not about how much you make. It’s how much you save.
These “but the weather” arguments are so dumb.

my cousin had a similar experience in the bay area where he was actually able to save a chit ton, despite living in one of the most expensive places in the union.
and yeah..it's got its problems, but it could be much much worse.

I live in Michigan, and I used to like it growing up. Now that I’m 33 and single, there aren’t many redeeming qualities. It won’t be tough to move away whenever I pull the trigger in another 5-7 years.

I assume people stating NY are too fukkin stupid to realize there is an "upstate NY" and not just NYC. Upstate NY is the chit.

Sure, there's a lot of natural beauty and it'd be nice for a visit, but actually living there? It's cold as fuk, mostly uninhabited, and is so remote from the rest of the country that it might as well not even be a part of the US.
Utah is up there as well, because I'm not Mormon.

Alabama. Mississippi. Louisiana. California.
Every state has a nice spot but the first three are mostly garbage. California is fun to visit (because of scenery) but you couldn't pay me to live there

In VA things are a lot different and the nice areas by the coast or bay cost almost the same +- 200 rent wise but I’ll be making nearly double my pay in SoCal.
VA is commonwealth state so that means taxing everything almost as bad as states like Cali and paying piss poor wages.
Guess how much a journeyman electrician makes ? About 20$ hr around here. That’s ****ing bread crumbs. I’ll make more than that in Cali and I’m just a scaffold builder.
Only exception is the DOD contractors but it’s really tough to get in through those naval shipyard companies unless you’re family with someone in management.
Good luck getting that.

At any rate, part of the equation of saving, or building wealth, is building equity. And that’s the problem that always disillusions 90%+ of the millennials who move there when the glitz and glamour eventually fade and they realize they want to be normal people again and raise a family.
