Yes, this happened to me before having Instagram, it's one of the reasons why I finally caved and got it in early 2017. I knew that in a few years time (now) it would be almost mandatory to get the young, attractive girls online.

There is one strategy you can try that worked for me back in 2016 in pre-instagram tinder days, here it is:

Basically the DHV has to be something like you have a high status job that takes most of your time. The problem is everything else has to be congruent with that, if your 'alpha archetype' is the high flying businessman, or handsome doctor, or coke snorting manhattan investment banker etc. then you might be able to pull it off (although some of these guys are even on Instagram nowadays). However, if your archetype is the partying frat boy, adventurous explorer, fitness fanatic etc. then they almost always have an IG to back it up, anything else that means you have enough spare time to have a social media account, then you may need at least a decent social media presence, otherwise you will lose opportunities.

You used to just be able to feign any archetype. You could literally just lie about all the parties you were going to etc. even though, in reality, you might have just been an FA'r lying on your couch, making yourself sound good and could get away with it, that's harder to do these days.
