Or maybe, just maybe we can't afford expensive ass motorcycles and have more important priorities like $35K student loans and saving up for an $150K house in cheaper areas? I want a R6, but now it's just not the time.
this. they're poor as dirt. it's almost as if inflation has taken the newer generation for 2%+ every year while wages have been totally stagnant!!!!!
If Harley was smart, they'd extort the dollar shave club, beard oil, web developer demographic. You know, the millennials from wealthy families that went to private schools, make 80 to 130k in software engineering or web developing but try desperately hard to look like they live couch to couch?

You release a heavily vintage-inspired design. Strip it of nearly every creature comfort possible, slap a Harley logo on it, make Ryan Gosling the brand ambassador and sell the $1,000 bike for $10,000 msrp. You know how many idiots would go around bragging about their "vintage style'd Harley"? Jesus... make me VP. It's so simple.
Triumph already controls that market

Ducati if you want power with the look.

But Japan doesn't need to sell the same bikes they sold in the 70s to make money. Hayabusa and Ninja sell themselves.

first off, harleys are lame af, second, why would anybody in their right mind pay the msrp on even one of there mid range bikes, they get super pricey, and younger people now are broke as ever, with a recession looming in the next year or two. Adapt, overcome, and survive. if a business cant do those things they have no right being in business.

I don't like Harley's but a lot of your guys are posting motorbike n00b phrases such as "why would you buy a Harley when an R1 is faster" etc.

People don't buy Harley's because they are fast, or because they have cutting edge technology.

They like the cruiser idea of having a lot of torque and cruising comfortably. They like that the engine is a pushrod driven antique.

All these things are not for me but I can understand why people like those things.

What I don't like is the snobby owners with their matching hd jackets, hats, watch, socks, pillowcase, etc

I'm surprised at the hate in here. A lot of good points on why Harley is failing tho. It's amazing to see that everyone in the world can see why Harley is failing, except the Harley execs.

Harley only sells one or two types/styles of bikes.

The market changes.

VW beetles and vans were big in the 60s. Imagine if they were the only product VW was selling today. You see how stupid that sounds, but that is what Harley is doing.

Even when VW made the comeback beetle, it was updated with modern manufacturing and the engine is in the front because it shares platforms with other cars. Harley will have to sell cheaper bikes or go out of business.

Toyota stopped making sports cars and when they came back to it, they collaborated with subaru/bmw, most likely due to cost reasons, not wanting to invest too much R&D dollars on a design from scratch on cars that will be low volume sellers. Purists hate it and its not a "real" supra IMO either but Toyota did it for business reasons and people will still buy it. Harley should probably be using Yamaha engines or something to reduce their costs. The purists will hate it but it might save the company.

I just don't see the allure of paying a premium for 1950s technology.

Could you see this in the car industry? Replica 1950s cars with 200hp and bias ply tires and roll up windows with no electronics or safety features selling for 100k just because they have some chrome polish and a decent paint job?

I understand people buy into the brand and I ride with a lot of weekend warrior club guys. But they don't really ride. It's more of a warm up the engine between bar stools kind of riding.

Hired a Harley for a weekend when in Florida (Fatboy iirc). Am used to riding sports bikes.

Mind was actually blown by how much of a piece of **** it was.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed cruising about on it for a few days, the noise, the torque etc but it emitted so much heat and rattled and vibrated so much it was unbearable after a hour or two.

Kinds dont want a harley, they either want a fast sportsbike or they're a bit more hipster and want a royal enfield or some sort of cafe racer.

It's a bike for older men who have no real bills to worry about or just have the money to blow. It's a social statement bike. Half of them sit in garages more than half the year while the owner brags to their friends about it when they come over for a drink or cookout.

Triumph, Honda, Indian, and Moto Guzzi are bikes id rather have at this point. (I dont ride anymore though due to an accident and not having the peace of mind to get back on again)
