I went from obese to extremely skinny and then up to a normal state of lean. And I was completely untrained prior to doing that, so I had very little muscle mass but still didn't have the "skinny-fat" look at the end, quite to the contrary, I was "skinny-shredded" / very vascular. Been lean bulking ever since.

ROFLMFAO @ people still spewing the starvation mode nonsense. For fuk's sake, there are tons of posts on this very forum disproving that stupid myth. I could write tons of paragraphs explaining how that theory is all sorts of wrong, but it'd be a waste of time.

BTW: All of those "after" pics are old, including that one two months into the bulk. I look much different now. Will post progress photos eventually.
starvation mode is real but it is only entered at very low body fat levels circa 4 or 5%, that is because there isn't enough fat to live off so body tissue is broken down. as for metabolism slowing down/breaking this is very real and it happens when you constantly drop calories for a long duration. it never recovers which is why people gain weight back more often than not. it's all in the obesity code which is backed by science (not broscience)

1.) What you describe as starvation mode is not the starvation mode people refer to when talking about fat loss "plateaus". The body still loses weight at 3% body fat, but in that case it just breaks down organs, muscles, everything basically. It still loses weight.

2.) I never denied metabolic adaptations, but there is no evidence for SIGNIFICANT issues that aren't resolved by slightly eating less and moving more. Read my lengthy post after that post you quoted.

I'm done discussing it in this thread right here.

I do it purely for calorie control/the fact that I can eat 2 relatively large meals and remain in a deficit.

Some of the supposed science behind it is actually a bit questionable / not as set in stone as some would have you believe. It's just a great calorie control tool for most people, nothing overly magical going on outside of that.

I am absolutely dumbfounded that we are 4 pages in and no one has mentioned a ketogenic metabolism versus a glycogen based metabolism. Then again it is the misc sooooo.....

My understanding is that IF is profoundly different when in a state of ketosis than when eating a typical whole foods/carb diet. If you think you are fully glycogen depleting in 12-18 hours of fasting after eating 100grams + of carbs, then you are either delusional or working out EXTREMELY hard in your fasted window. Auto****y is one of the alleged benefits of IF, but it requires being ketogenic to really work, otherwise you need like 72 hours of fasting to really get into auto****y.

That said, IF is a huge convenience boost. And again, if keto is in the mix, no one is even bringing up the contribution of your actual body fat stores. BRB a 5% shredded guy and my 20%, 50lbs of fat on my body ass both go on a water fast. BRB obviously I feel better than him because I am WEARING MY FOOD. I get about 1000 calories a day from consuming my own fat, but someone shredded might get 200 calories. Clearly there is a difference between someone obese going on a heavy cut and using IF and someone who is already shredded doing the very same.

what better tool for consistency than convenience?

and what is the most important part of losing fat? consistency

my understanding is your body will not burn stored fat until if and when its glycogen supplies from prior meals are depleted. your body will ALWAYS reach for the easiest to burn fuel source before burning stored fat for fuel. "fasting" is just a term for having sufficiently depleted your fuel from consumed foods so that your body reaches for stored fat for fuel.

totally agree, the point is that its different for different people. some people may enter that state after 14 hours of fasting. it might take others literally days. im not totally sure what the science says about that.

Last I checked there was no genuine scientific support for IF, and all evidence indicated that there was no inherent advantage over a more conventional meal schedule.

That's not to say it won't work for a lot of people by helping them stick to their diets, especially with a calorie restriction, but you shouldn't be fooled into thinking it has all these magical benefits that a lot of people claim.

tell that to the 1000s of patients who have reversed obesity and diabetes 2 who get treated at the Toronto Metabolic Clinic. IF is more about normalizing insulin resistance and breaking food addiction (fixing your hormones, insulin, leptin etc)

It really helps me begin a cut. It keeps me from snacking and kick starts the weight loss. Once i get a month into a cut my appitite decreases i get used to eating in a deficit. At that point i prefer to eat 2 small high protein meals (300cal each) and one large meal at night. I just physically feel better and perform better in gym.

Bodybuilders are still eating a meal every 3 hours. And they still all say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Everybody preaching IF are either DYEL status or look really thin. I've tried IF and while effective for cutting. It really boils down to a caloric deficit. Until professional bodybuilders, strong men, cross fitters, and athletes start getting on the IF train I'll reserve my opinion of it.

IF is creating a healthy diet from whole foods, more cals if youre trying to gain muscle, fewer if you're trying to lose fat (its all an educated guess - you need to test and adjust according to your progress over time) and then eating all your food for the day in a smaller window - say 6 hours or so. so for example you'd only eat from 4pm - 10pm, and then fast from 10pm til 4pm the next day. you can have black coffee or green tea during the fasted time.

the goal is to fast long enough to reap the benefits. after maybe 15 hours of fasting (everyones different), your body will start burning stored fat for fuel, you'll fee great, have lots of energy, be focused, and you'll lose burn stored fat (which is far more important than losingweight. theres also evidence it optimizes insulin response, preserves muscle, and boosts HGH production naturally

thats the idea

Lost lots of weight with it because I wasn`t eating 150 snacks during the day, it's a great tool for calorie control. I'm not hungry until 2-3 afternoon so that's when I start my eating window. I shut it down around 18-19 so I only eat for 5 hours, I usually have my second coffee and 1 meal. Sometimes I just get a small pizza and I add lots of lean meat and ham. It`s under 1000 calories and I`m still losing weight.

Today I ate super healthy but lots, it depends on the day and mood. Thing is, I`m hungry during my eating timeframe and it`s much easier to control my calories/have what I want. Brb French fries, burger and half of a chocolate for 1200 calories. If I`m feeling yucky I go for 1500 cals that day. Other times I`m brb eating 2 salads and staying under 800. All the stupid advice about having 3 meals should go directly to garbage bin. Don`t want to remind myself how I tried to eat healthy at the same hours, by clock and eat only green veggies and bs, but because the cals were for maintenance I`d be fking disappointed by the end of the month. Fuk that chit, pizza life come at me

EDIT: It`s important to mention that I don't eat pizza and fries daily for health reasons. I try to eat lots of lean meats and veggies and stay on a low carb diet since it works best for me. Your skin won`t be glowing eating pizza and burgers everyday

who says this? i know it was pushed by the cereal companies with marketing (hey it sounds good right?) to sell product back in the day. where is the evidence that it is the most important meal of the day?
