Damn CompTIA certs really pay off lol

Was at my networking class today. We've been out of A+ only for a month, and my buddy started working with a recruiter at a staffing company last week and already found a job making $27/hr w/ no experience with only the A+.

Anyone who says that cert is worth nothing - just lol. If anyone is looking to get in the field I'd highly recommend getting it.

Ye maybe that’s true for low skill companies. If I’m interviewing you, I could give zero fuks about your certs, masters or whatever other ****e you’ve listed.

I guess if you have no other experience or degrees in a related field then it might help get you the interview.

I didn't start getting phone calls for interviews until I had my A+ on my resume. If you don't have anything IT related on your resume, CompTIA certs are fine. After your first job, I'd say at least Net+ and A+ don't provide much value.

Got my A+ during 2nd year for the lulz since my best friend is in IT. I actually thought I'd fail 2nd year of school and needed a back up.

Now I have a A+ cert rusting. May try and get Network+ for the lulz later on

General Assembly has some recognized courses too afaik. If you don’t have a degree in the field you wanna get into, make sure you do your research on job prospects. Too many people get worthless certs.

Are Cisco certs worth anything these days? I remember CISSP etc were all the rage years ago.

He's half right. Certifications alone don't tell me **** about a candidate. They do backup skills and prove a candidate probably knows things they seem to know in an interview.

I wouldn’t even go that far. The recruiter may use qualifications to filter for the interview, but once it gets to me I just skip over that section completely and look at examples from experience.

Sometimes I won’t even look at the Resume and ask a technical question.

Technical questions should be extremely easy if you pass the exam. homie. My current instructor has a degree in electrical engineering, worked for the IC half of his life, and barely passed the A+ (901/902) The exam is on par with the LSAT.

I mostly agree, but they do give a candidate a tiny boost due to third party verifiable knowledge of a subject, all other things being equal.

Well that’s fair, if the material in CompTIA actually helps the candidate be better at the job and more technically competent, it’ll help. Whether he learns it via YouTube or CompTIA under instruction is all the same to me though, that’s the only point I’m making.

Right now my job is pretty boring and dry af because we're back in maintenance mode. I miss the chaos of integrating chit tier companies into our systems. It was hectic af traveling around 1-2 times a month to get things done but it was far more exciting. Now, the most excitement I've had is working with our sys admins on getting SCCM set up for PXE boot imaging and working on a 4-5 year refresh plan of all our PCs. L.A.M.E.

Clearly I'm doing something wrong in my job searching endeavours then because in the last year i passed the A+, Network+, Security+, and Linux+ CompTIA tests and have been offered nothing but an entry level IT job.

According to the IT managers I know Cisco certs like the CCNA are a must for doing any serious networking related stuff. I'm supposed to take it and the security portion in the next 6 months.

Can someone aware me? To get the comptia a+, do I have to take a class then an exam? or can I get a book or something then take the exam? I would like to do this for fun.

You can find the books online and take the exam locally. It's not a terrible cert but I've met too many people that passed the exam and didn't know chit about even our tier 1 support job. It does look good on the resume and helps get a foot in the door though.

You just have to pay for the exam and take it. Finding all the study material online for free should be easy.

IT is definitely one of those fields where only 1 in 10 actually know their chit and can also problem solve. It also seems to attract a lot of introverted people with weak life goals, little passion, and rot'ter it up hard waiting for 5pm to hit.

I had a former IT boss that was a rot'ter. Lord... that was the worst. You do the job of 5 people... but they don't care... because they're a rot'ter. No way you're going to impress a person like that.
