The dwarf is such a great character. Easily the most intersting. What is so good about GOT is that they are not afraid to kill anyone off. The main character could be killed off at any moment.

There's no elves or hobbits or dwarves n chit in game of thrones. Cept for 1 actual human dwarf.

LOTR can be enjoyed by a 5 year old, because it's just a basic simplistic fantasy.
GoT is definitely for adults, and less of a fantasy than a medieval drama with fantasy elements. Very different types of fiction.

GoT is closer to Sopranos than it is to LOTR.

GoT is an amazing show

I realize it deviates in the later seasons but honestly even the worst seasons of GoT are good you just need to realize it’s a grotesque drama not an action movie or house of cards but a bit of both

I thought season 6 was epic, especial the Hodor scene. I think all 7 season so far as a whole is absolutely epic. To me, the show got better and better as each season went and as the story unfolds.

Watched once as in 1 episode? GOT is far from mediocre writing. It is up there as one of the best written shows. Random gore? lol.

as in watched all of the episodes once. if im not surprised by the plot twists then its mediocre, and I wasnt surprised. it relies too much on violence for shock value instead of actually getting me to care about the characters. I like the into sequence tho.

i've watch season 1 and 2, but i don't have HBO so i haven't been compelled to finish it or watch it "free online stream"

i think it's a great show, but you have to be in the mood to watch it, likewise any other medieval/ancient setting...most people would rather watch something like The Office and there's nothing wrong with it. not everyone has to like your dungeons and dragons roleplay show, diff. people w/ diff. tastes.

i'd be more disheartened to learn that someone doesn't like Breaking Bad or something less niche.

I tried to watch it back in like 2012. I think I made it like 4 eps in and I just couldn't get into at all. Years later everyone would always talk about how good it is so I tried to watch it again. I powered through season 1 which is easily the worst. I ended up watching all 6 seasons at the time in the span of a month and a half. Honestly it is one of the best shows ever produced on television. I watched season 7 as they came out weekly and I look forward to the last season.

It has little to do with the Hobbit movies outside of being fantasy. I'm not a fan of them either.

Game of Thrones, on the other hand, is one of the best shows ever made IMO. It's great because it subverts your typical fantasy expectations (which is probably why i'm not a fan of the Hobbit, but love ASoIaF/Game of Thrones). Watch it. Seasons 1-4 especially are 10/10 storytelling. Everything after that is good, but not up to the standards of the early seasons (the directors get a big head and try to write their own scenes; everything before was so good because it was lifted straight out of the books, sometimes scene for scene).

It had some good bits, but when I read that the next episode was going to have a guy raping his sister while she held the hand of the corpse of their son, I decided I'd had enough.

Since the first episode had that same guy toss out a child out of a tower window because he'd witnessed him doing his own sister doggystyle, I should have known where it was going.

Now, if it were the Bronn & Tyrion show, I could be into it.

You're insane! The show at that point had a smaller budget so it wasn't shot as well, but storytelling wise it's the tightest season (be far my favorite season too). Sure it doesn't have the action of the seasons that followed, but Ned and the entire mystery surrounding Lord Arryns death were 10/10. Almost no scene was wasted. Everything related some kind of back story, dynamic, or foreshadowed a future event.

I will say though that it's better on rewatches (you get a lot more of what they're talking about and you're more familiar with the characters and lore of the world so everything just connects better). I understand people who have a rough time getting into it at first, just because of the info overload in season 1, but after you watch the seasons that follow you'll likely love the first. It's miles better than 5-7 in every way other than action.

It was horrendous. Stannis Baratheon should give back his 'World's Best Dad' mug.

Yeah, that scene was ridiculous. It's an example of the directors trying their own hand at story telling when they should have stuck to the source material.

Spoiler!
Stannis burning his daughter was, IMO, their crowning fuk up. That was the most out of character thing they could have done with him (I could seriously see Stannis bending the knee easier than I could see him burning Shireen), and the show writers always had it out for his character so that scene always felt like spite as opposed to good writing. This is a guy who went to the ends of the earth to save his daughter from Greyscale just a few short years prior. I also remember a scene where her mother was going to smack her but Stannis stopped her and told her no one would lay a hand on his daughter. His love for Shireen was definitely integrated into his character in the show, and there was nothing believable about him burning her. I could see him burning himself while leaving others in charge to put Shireen on the Throne. I could see him forcing his army to continue marching through the snow until they either die or reach Winterfell. I cannot see him burning his only successor (the future rightful Queen) who also happens to be the only person in the world he truly loves.

At least he won't do it in the book. Book Stannis purposefully left her behind to keep her safe from his war. He also has both the Greyjoy siblings imprisoned so Shireens kings blood is unnecessary. There is seriously no legitimate reason he'd do it.

Stannis burning Shireen is where he diverged from his book self for the first time, and it was drastic. BookStannis also signed and sent a contract to the Iron Bank of Braavos to purchase 20,000 sell swords pledged to avenge him and put his daughter on the Iron Throne if he dies in the battle for Winterfell. He left her behind at Castle Black as a backup plan to fulfill their families duty should he fail and die. ShowStannis, on the other hand, made a decision to burn her in a single scene for a sunny day. It doesn't feel consistent with the kind of choice he'd make at all in the face of a single small setback (oh no its cold and my horses are dying).

Book Stannis when confronted with freezing to death: "Half of my army is made up of non-believers. There will be no burnings. Pray harder"
Show Stannis when confronted with freezing to death: "Let me alienate the fuk out of my entire army by burning the love of my life to death for a glimmer of a chance at something that might not even work"

Also, not relevant, but I think Stannis is going to beat the Boltons in the book. He has a history of overcoming the odds and beating his enemies in their own element and the book doesn't portray the struggle as one sided. The Boltons are also going through all kinds of chit and betrayals. Stannis has supporters on the inside. The battle also doesn't take place during a sunny day. GRRM claims the book is going to open up with what he calls the Battle in the Ice, so Stannis is going to go IN in a full out winter battle

Every season has absolutely amazing scenes. Its big budget Hollywood level.

Tha doesn't make the writing or story good.

If you think the writing/plot of most of season 7 is "epic" you have terrible fuking tastes.
If there are certain scenes you think are amazing, that's fine (Loot Train scene from last season was fuking amazing)

good piece of advice I once read about the show:

u know how in episodes of law and order svu or regular law and order, it used to show some random character who would have something really bad happen to them? U didn't really know the character so you weren't invested. You have to watch GoT as if every character is a law and order extra. Anyone can die or have horrible chit happen to them at any time. If you go into this mindset and don't give a chit about any of the characters, the show is bearable.

Yes not giving a chit about characters is a great way to enjoy any show that builds character development, emotional development, personal conflict, and then kills them
