Immigration appeals to his hardcore base, but he also won because he ran on a populist economic platform. Since coming into office, he hasn't done chit on immigration except take Ls. First thing he tried to do was take healthcare away from people and failed. Then passed a tax cut for the rich. Neither of which aligned with his platform.

You saw what happened in 2018 in the midterms.

So what does he do now? Double down on immigration to appeal to his base, while shutting down the government and now declaring a NE. Every poll has shown this does nothing but hurt his standing outside of the base.

His base will probably be there for him in 2020, wall or not. But it's not enough to get him elected. 2019 has been an absolute disaster for him, and it's not getting any better with the Dems taking over the house.

2020 is shaping up to be an absolute bloodbath for the GOP - and McConnell and the rest of them know it, which is why they cautioned him against the NE. All this to pave the way for President Harris or Sanders to use the NE for climate change, gun control, medicare for all.

The only thing that will shake his base is if he were to somehow win in 2020, he wouldn't ever mention the wall again. The only way he talks about wall stuff during a 2nd term is if the 22nd Amendment gets abolished.

Devil's in the details. A sitting president can have it that sweeping anti-gun laws like CA, NJ, Chicago, MD, etc are passed across the country. It's not rescinding the 2A, but passing temporary laws.

We have many national emergencies carried over for decades still in effect, but any one of them could be ended. They aren't permanent.

I guess we are gonna just bypass the fact that dems including Schumer were all for more secure borders and anti immigration just a few years ago. Yet as soon as Trump gets into office they change their tune.
