I've been into computers and around the internet since before the world wide web was invented. From a macro point of view I have a pretty good understanding of technology since I've literally seen it evolve in front of my eyes.

Everyone has this idea that there is a plethora of wiz-bang computer guys that are like the Varangian Guard working together and pledged to protect what's most important. The truth is every industry in this country has mostly little to mediocre protection against any tech related attack. Yet, the dependency and interconnectedness of tech keeps expanding. And those wiz-bang computer guys are very few and far between. If a well funded group hit the right targets, with the right plan, they could create a domino effect that would send this nation into a panic.

I honestly think people would be freaked if they knew how many recognizable companies in this nation are operating with dog-chit tier security. I have a fellow tech buddy that works for a large corporation (everyone would recognize) that told me something the other day that just blew my mind. It took what i thought was my baseline for dog-chit tier security to a whole new level.

I work in tech as well and if anything its really shown me how stupid and unaware the average person is. They wait until the worst case scenario actually happens before they pay any real attention. I was in Houston during Harvey. I was amazed how many people just stood around with their thumbs up their arses till the bitter end waiting for someone to come save them. I remember kayaking down my parents street to see if people needed help and some family tried to get me to tow their wheelchair bound grandmother out somehow (single person kayak). The water was rising for days so they had plenty of time to do something before then. It's also interesting how people under stress like that can't think rationally at all. They'd rather drowned saving grandma's fine dining (my parents to a degree) set than walk/drive to safety while they still can.
