You can order car parts online easier than you can order pharmaceuticals. Also lol at using extreme cases as an example, I'm pretty sure a tabby specialist wasnt flown in to incorrectly diagnose my cat with glaucoma for 600 dollars when the whole event took 10mins and I never left the office.

Oh and then try to sell me a 1700 dollar eye removal surgery afterwards.... but yes, only "tradies" are dishonest

I've found honest mechanics, but they are rare. Once you find one hold onto them for dear life. I still drive 45 minutes to the guy who was the first one in my city to diagnose my car properly (I have a decent knowledge of cars) and then tell me exactly what was needed and the up front cost with either new or aftermarket parts before starting work.

Too late at this point, I wish I would've done more research prior. And I waited too long, the ball joints were real bad.

How you get it done for so cheap?

Each control arm installed came to like 230CAD and then I had a coupon, the alignment cost is pretty standard across the board. Honestly Google can be a life saver from mechanics, i have no car experience but generally answers are easily accessible through auto forums

For example just googling "control arm replacement cost" tells me on avg its 120-300/arm so if I got a quote for 1100 and I wasn't driving a premium automobile the warning flags should go up

Since this is turning into a car general thread, recommend me a car. My primary goal is to pick up 18-22 year old asian girls. I don't want anything big, I want something 2 door with good handling.

Stupid because I just changed the battery and now its drained and dead. My car insurance will tow it for free but it HAS to be to a certified shop.

Car is a 73' Chevy Nova SS. I'm thinking it should be around $500 or so.
It shouldn't cost much. It's an easy repair. They'll add time to diagnose the problem though. Should be easy access, loosen belt, remove wires, swap alternator, replace wires, tighten belt. ~15min. Watch a youtube video then do it yourself in your parking lot.

What kind of car is it? Some of those control arms can be bitch to replace. An alignment shouldn't cost more than $80 and that's if you get the road force version. Also if your in a rust prone region stuff like that can get expensive real quick

I do my honda myself, which ends up costing around $35-40 tho

Control arms probably won't be easy, you may want to have it done. However, they have plenty of clean work on newer cars so they're ****ing you. Brakes are easy and you should do them yourself. Also, you may not even need them, it's an upsell. Asking a mechanic if you need brakes is like asking a barber if you need a haircut.

I changed my own oil in my BMW. 6 quarts of synthetic and an oil filter is only like $50. The filter was super easy to change too since it was the type without the canister and was right in the front of the engine bay

Lexus gs430. Guy told me bolts were rusted.

How hard would calipers be? I need those done next. When I went to change my brakes the front driver side slide bolt was locked in place. The top bolt could move, but bottom was frozen. Don't know what the passenger is like because I kept everything on.

Rusted bolts usually just need you to hit the head with a blunt instrument, could be hammer, could be wrench, if you try and take them off just make sure you have the exact right wrench so you dont strip the bolt head, then its trickier

A buddy of mine went to a local dealership shop and they brought out some old dirty filter and said his needed to be replaced, and it would be $50 to do it. He had just changed the filter the previous week and called them out on their chit. I was in the same dealership the other day at the server dept waiting room and heard one of the guys come in saying they needed a filter, all I could do is shake my head.

That's moreso as a precautionary CYA with American lawsuit-happy culture. Ever notice how they want you to get xrays and MRI's for a minor contusion? How if you get a car wreck the cops call the ambulance and they insist you get checked out by a doctor (this was a matter of policy when I was an LEO - minor fender bender ambulance every time)?

Doctor didn't tell me I needed a follow up and now I'm ded, time to sue.

Sales are a big deal at most mechanic shops. Employees are constantly harrassed by management to "up sell" services, leading to scummy practices and dishonest bullchit tactics.

Someone willing to dick a customer over is going to have far better upselling than someone ethical, thus being seen as the superior employee by management.

Same chit happens in restaurants, dealerships, or anywhere people are there to "assist" you into buying **** you dont need.

A big problem with people is when they a couple estimates, they immediately assume the cheaper quote is going to be worse service, especially when you deal with people in BMW, MB, etc.

You have to charge somewhere in the middle so you’re not losing business to wel-off people who are clueless.

It's generally the customer who is a scummy idiot. Seven out of ten times they're a huge cheap bastard and go to the absolute, scummiest place they can find just to save a dollar, even if it's old Leroy in his back yard. After they finally realize their first mistake, they try to man up and take it to the second cheapest shop they can find for more of the same. Finally they have no choice but to bring it in to a reputable shop where the garbage people say "But the last guy charged way less!", or something like "My uncle said it's this or that!". Eventually you have to Wade through the last two or three guys hack jobs on your way to fixing their problem. After that, while they're paying they usually say something stupid like "I could have fixed it but just didn't have time.". The internet has only compounded the amounts of arrogant morons who think they know something from having read an automotive forum.
