Ben is testament to how far being great at just (what I’d call) “traditional” wrestling will take you in the UFC. The dude is a top tier wrestler. But to me, he looks so slow and mechanical while standing. There’s sooo much risk involved with the way he tries to get you down.

I can see RDA, Covington, and even til giving him big problems. Also, I don’t think he has anything on Marty.

However, I actually like askren and hope I’m wrong.
Askren probably won't ever have good standup but it probably doesn't matter as long as he gets ahold of you.

RDA would get drowned by Askren. RDA HATES forward pressure and has that horrible tendency to back himself up against the fence against guys who go forward (Colby and Usman drowned him with relentless pressure and Askren would do the same).

Agree on Colby and Usman being interesting challenges but if you think about it.. Robbie was one of the worst matchups possible for Ben and he theoretically passed it. A rematch wouldn't be bad but I was thoroughly impressed with Askren's recovery.

lol at cody spamming punches like a video game and getting ko'd.

robbys hand falling down that fast is a sign of the sheer pain he was under from that choke. i thought he was out and then askren let it slip a little and robby regained consciousness but in the end i think that was a fair stoppage.

and jones looked nasty as always.

Brahs what do you think about Ben?
I legit feel this might be the best and worst UFC debut possible.
Huge fan of Ben and also i dont think it was a bad stoppage robbie wasnt getting out of that choke anyway.

There were 2mintues left in the round!Anyways thoughts also Tyron looked like **** and didnt do nuttin

I feel like Askren saw that the Khabib style is in fashion so he pushed to come in and do his thing too.

Btw I guess most people don’t know but those types of chokes physically hurt really bad worse than regular neck chokes. I could seriously break someone’s jaw if i cranked down on it.

You have to be really careful because the human jaw CAN break.

Also it was funny the way Robbie tried to play it off by popping out after the call with that “I’m totally fine” expression on his face to save face from getting choked out and not having to tap.

You can’t even consider it a “bad call” it doesn’t matter if he was actually out out, you don’t win fights by making the ref fear for your life no matter how you look at it. If it appeared unsafe that all that is in play and it doesn’t pertain to what was actually happening vs what appeared to be happening. A thumbs up would have been all he needed but again, his jaw was almost about to dislocate.

It was an intriguing debut. Got smashed half to death, came back and took it to the ground and got the finish. Regardless of the poor stoppage Lawler wasn't going anywhere, it would have been good to see it continue.

thoughts before bed

Cody has low fight IQ

WMMA continues to evolve and it starting to get somewhat interesting, but still not main card worthy.

absolutely insane that Askren somehow weathered that early storm. Super impressed by that.

Usman's pace and aggression were really something else. Dunno what the ref was smoking to break them up so much when they were clinched up. Usman was never using it as an excuse to take a breather, he was constantly striking and getting better positions.

The only person who continues to be able to beat Jon Jones is himself. Literally 15 seconds before he threw the illegal knee I turned to my friend and said he better not fuk this up and do something stupid like throw an illegal knee. Jon is one lucky SOB herb didn't DQ him and Anthony didn't say he couldn't continue. Despite all the controversies surrounding Jon I still think he's the best fighter to ever do it thus far.
Awesome pics. Great size. Look thick. Solid. Tight. Keep us all posted on your continued progress with any new progress pics or vid clips. Show us what you got man. Wanna see how freakin' huge, solid, thick and tight you can get. Thanks for the motivation.

Askren and Marty from Nebraska have heat, so they'll be looking to capitalize on that and make that fight sooner rather than later. And Askren is top ten now with a win over Lawler, so one more win and the UFC can justify giving him a title shot.

So maybe they can let Kamaru wreck Colby next, and if Askren can beat Robbie in a rematch (or maybe someone like Demian Maia who is ranked eighth- which would be a really cool style matchup), then let him fight Marty for the title.

He's in his mid-30s, all of his opponents know his game, he relies solely on one aspect of MMA, and he is one of the tiny amount of fighters who probably hasn't taken tech.

That's amazing in itself.

I agree. RDA would be a more competitive match.
I guess if I had to boil it down, askren never took much damage in bellator (that I’ve seen at least, haven’t watch all of his fights.) in fact, he’s made a lot of guys look like cans.
I see phenomenal wrestling skills with askren, but I also see glaring opportunities to damage him. I think his strategy works, but now that he’s looking at the top 5 welterweights in the world, I suspect he’ll have more trouble than usual — this might seem obvious to many, but this guy is super hyped. We’ve seen guys from other promotions that had a great resume flop once they got to the UFC.

That said, I like the guy and I want to believe. I need one more fight from him to be sold.

I saw all of his fights in Bellator. But when he went to fight in Asia, I only saw clips after the fight.

You're correct that he never took any real damage. He also wasn't dishing out much damage either most of the time. In those Bellator fights, he would just wrestle the chit out of them. He didn't throw a ton of ground-and-pound, and when he did, it was mostly just light stuff to prevent the fight from being stood up. But he was still learning in those days. Maybe he can do his thing now and can cause more damage in the process. I want to believe too, but I think good strikers with really good footwork are going to piece him up.

Dana wants a rematch he really is hoping Askren loses, he’d been fine if herb had stopped the first after he got slammed on his head even though it would’ve been a bad stoppage cause we all know recovered

Like Carwin Brock when Brock came back from that onslaught
Askren is a tough mother to take that and bounce back

Not sure why people are comparing what Robbie did to askren in relation to the choke finish.

You guys realize those mma floors are practically spring loaded booster mats like they use in gymnastics right? Getting slammed down on it is hardly even painful. They do it in wrestling all the time.

Robbie tried to get intense and give it all he had but it wasn’t really ever close to a stoppage it was just a matter of Askren regaining hand control after the flurry.

I believe herb dean has stopped fights for less than the slam Askren took. I thought for sure he’d stop it when lawler was pounding him after it. Would’ve been premature but not unlike herb dean. And Dana would’ve been pleased then. Just my observation

No getting slammed doesn’t mean the fight is over. I’ve never seen a fight stopped over that except a time when someone actually got the wind knocked out of them and they stopped it for getting a KO.

But it was quite obvious (besides the commentary) that he was fine. He looked ok and his body language never indicated he was really hurt. He kept moving and defending. Wasn’t close to danger of stoppage and ref knows he’s quite resilient.

Robbie is pretty weak at wrestling or ground game in general so it wasn’t like he was gonna be able to keep him down or do anything.

The only clever concept was that he lifted him up on his back when he wasn’t expecting it while working on a clinch transition. Cool move but wasn’t gonna do anything with it.

When they got back on their feet. There were opportunities for Robbie to piece up Askren, but I was suprised he didnt. In those moments I felt had Robbie kept the punishment up back on the feet while maintaining distance, Askren wouldve been out.

Askren doesn't seem to have quick initial reaction or somebody who's explosive on the feet (hence got taken down), it's the moment he gets ahold of you (what ever position he is in) were he is slick and has the conditioning to go all day.

Just waiting too see him get challenged were his opponent continues the onslaught from the ground back up on the feet.

He can definitely recover being in the pressure on his back while having bombs thrown at him. Most ppl wouldve have just continued to turtle and take punishment.

I hate to say this but Brock turtled up one time in the worst moment in mma history imo
Askren isn’t that way under immense pressure

I agree with much of the above.

I didn’t like herb much since Nate quarry beat Pete sell and Pete got a rematch too but this is not a case where it’s really needed. Askren has said no to an instant rematch.

Tito slammed Evan tanner for the ko ftw too yes

Wasn't there just a thread or video about how hard Askren's squeeze was? Robbie was out at least long enough for it to be called. We'll never know if he regained because Ben loosened up or not, but like I said before, no one's arm would go limp like that if they were conscious.
