Women reveal the extraordinary measures they take to feel safe when they're alone, as Instagram star admits 'fear has become foundational' for her



-Wellness influencer Chinae Alexander, 33, took to Instagram on Tuesday to open up about the constant fear she feels as a woman
-She also asked her followers the precautions they take to feel safe
-More than 300 people commented on the post in just five hours, and many women said they carry their keys between their fingers as a makeshift weapon
-Others opened up about taking their headphones off at night, carrying pepper spray, walking quickly, and always being aware of their surroundings
-One woman admitted she cut her hair into a short pixie after someone pulled it

One woman said she and her single neighbor keep their key fobs by their beds so they can set their car alarms off if they ever need help at home.

'I always lock my car and keep my finger on the panic button on the key fob when pumping gas,' she added.

'I will definitely pick up my walking pace, make sure I take my keys out of my purse ahead of time, and grip onto them in my coat pocket,' someone else said.

'Feel sick to my stomach every time a man on the street looks at me like a piece of meat, and honestly since I live alone have been considering purchasing cameras for inside my apartment when I'm not home because the maintenance man in my building just gives me a really wrong vibe.'

Fans of the post praised Chinae for drawing attention to the fear that women and LGBTQ people face on a daily basis.

'How did it become that women are the ones who have to fear?' one person asked. ' would love to be able to just travel the world by myself, but as a woman, I fear I would be a sitting duck — always be aware.

'If something doesn't feel right, don't go, she added. 'Never be distracted. Always have keys in hand. Look confident. Walk fast.'


I'll start,' Chinae wrote in the comments section. 'I take off my headphones late at night, find my exits, and free my hands when I'm walking alone.'

More than 300 people commented on the post in just five hours, and many women agreed that they carry their keys between their fingers as a makeshift weapon and remove their headphones whenever they are walking alone.

'Headphones off as soon as I get off the train,' one woman wrote. 'If it's quite late I'll walk with my keys in my hand with my house keys poking out like a stabby little blade to inflict damage.'

Someone else added that she carries her keys between her fingers or holds her Jiu-Jitsu lanyard in her hand 'to choke or retrain someone.'

She admitted the most extreme thing she has ever done is cut her hair into a 'super short pixie after it was pulled once before.'

'This is a sad but true reality we face,' one Instagram user commented. 'My mom told me to always be aware of my surroundings. Sometimes I put my hair in a bun or tuck it in my coat/shirt so it's not easily grab-able.

'Men really have no idea how easy they have it,' she added.

I mean she does have a point. I never wear heels of sandals if I'm not with my husband. Always keep a pocket knife and used to keep pepper spray as well. But I've been attacked before so there is that.

Real talk, I have heard of former abuse victims who do things like wear shoes to sleep because they still fear having to bolt.

Having said that, I don't feel constant fear as a woman. I don't think I'm any more likely to be attacked in similar circumstances than a man. I do take certain precautions when I'm by myself or with just my son, but nothing above the norm that anyone else wouldn't do.

And I carry a gun... that doesn't mean that I'm actually likely to be attacked or need it.

The modernized world (i.e. America, Canada, most of Europe, etc.) are safe. The idea that women somehow are attacked on a massively larger scale than men is silly. Men are more likely to be victims of assault (at least last I knew), women are more likely to be victims of sexual assault, and men are FAR more likely to be victims of murder than women are.

Statistics generally say that if a woman is a victim of a violent crime, it's far more common for it to be someone they know.
Everything depends upon execution; having just a vision is no solution.

I lost it at all of the keys between fingers as weapons. They don't realize how little damage that will do unless they actually catch the ******* in the eyeball the first shot, which lets be real non of them will do, especially since most of them are so unathletic, that the force of the impact would just buckle the key in their little hands.

This. If you're a sloot you should be carrying an actual weapon and practice with it, and if you're in a cuck state you should be carrying some good spray and a legit knife that you can access easily.

This post is a good reality check. Real life isn't a you go girl movie, women are generally helpless no matter how much lifting or martial arts or w/e they do. My personal anecdote on all of this is I have a male friend who took BJJ for a while and wanted to "roll" with me one day. I had zero experience and still turned him into a pretzel because I'm pretty athletic and had 50lbs on him. I don't see how even the most highly trained woman in the world could do anything against a guy who has say 100lbs on her. Being constantly scared is the accurate way for them to be.

Any male or female that actually does BJJ for 2 years or more consistently will absolutely body you unless you literally have over like 100lbs on them and they physically can't wrap themselves around you. If they have been doing it 4-5 years or more consistently you're getting bodied no matter the size advantage if you roll with them...not saying you couldn't just punch them, talking strictly about rolling here

Someone that's been doing it for like 6 month-1 year they can still struggle a lot with people bigger or stronger than them.
