As a married man, I would say: Only in the situation in which you are ready and able to start a family. If that's not on the table, you're not ready or unable, then there is absolutely no reason to marry anyone. In my case, were my marriage to end somehow, I would never remarry under any circumstances as I do not want more children.

However, if you bring life into this world, at that moment you have obligations to do your best to ensure they are raised responsibly. Children need a family, a mother and a father, and for that marriage is your only real option.

I hope to find my lifelong companion, someone I can share my hopes and dreams with, someone I can trust with anything. Someone to end my lonely nights. Someone who will be there when I get old, no when we get old. I will shower her with love and affection no matter how many dinks she took when she was younger.

IF you truly love each other and want to be together forever then marriage makes the most sense for two people.

i agree with this, there are a lot of tax advantages with a married household.
but a marriage can also break up at any point and the woman can take 50% of your net worth.

How did you know when you were ready to get married?

Conversely

How did you know when it was time to break up and not get married, or, get divorced?

Well if you derive the worth of a marriage from the notion that it is a holy sacrament, then it is the only avenue to having children.

Related to that, studies have shown that in almost every metric you could think of, it is better for the child to have married parents rather than cohabiting parents.

https://www.brookings.edu/research/c...hree-big-ways/

TL;DR
- married parents earn more
- married parents intentionally have children more, rather than by accident
- married parents stay together more
- married parents are more educated

Of course, being married isn't necessarily the cause of some of these factors, but actually a byproduct of a certain lifestyle and set of principles for which these factors are also a byproduct.

But the point remains that all of these things lead to a better future for the child.

Ok I do agree with most of this. It is also a numbers game and we have to have kids for the survival of our race.

My question still stands though -WHENdoes this make sense? I'm not here to talk about Single vs. Married incomes or how children perceive married parents vs cohabiting parents.

Might help if you turn gay, might have more success that way.

I'm happily married, but Christ, you probably should just get a dog, man. Women can be great, don't get me wrong, but life isn't a Hallmark card, either.

i agree with this, there are a lot of tax advantages with a married household.
but a marriage can also break up at any point and the woman can take 50% of your net worth.
Did I say that? I meant to say marriage ONLY if you are having children, meaning without them then you don't. With them, you probably do - but not always.

Meaning: You can raise children in alternative households and, who knows, maybe they'll turn out great -- but statistically they're less likely to (when it comes to literacy, success in life, drug use or lack thereof, criminal behavior, etc). The way I approach it, you take no chances and you commit yourself fully to your children. You give them every opportunity you can. If that means they have a slightly better chance of growing up better being in a household with a father and a mother -- you do it.

Children didn't ask to be born. They are your responsibility and your legacy.

That said, in some situations maybe you don't get married -- I didn't say it was absolutely necessary. If you knock up a stripper by accident, in this situation you just do your best but I wouldn't necessarily recommend marriage.

What I did say is that the ONLY reason I saw to get married would be for a family/children, meaning if there are no children to talk about - in this case there is absolutely zero reason to marry anyone.

So, marriage ONLY if children, but if there are children marriage isn't absolutely required.

It's good for benefits like healthcare if the one person doesn't have a good job.

It's also good psychologically if you both really view each other as a team. It's like athletes on a football teams. I imagine that you could have no football teams and guys could just get together, form quick teams, and they and fans would still enjoy it all. BUT, being on a team "We are The EAGLES!" makes everyone feel better about playing.

A nice marriage is like being on an official team.

Being in a bad marriage is like being on a football team where the other players don't want to play or win. I've heard that's a real thing too.

My point is that marriage is largely psychological. It's either a way to trap a person then give up or a way to feel part of something special. The economic benefits aren't that great and you can do without them. If you really love someone you don't need to get married because you already are due to the love.

The great band Rammstein made the song Du Hast about marriage.

In it, he's saying "Du Hast/You have me already" and then goes on to question why the woman would try to force him into marriage. What is she trying to pull making him take vows and sign a contract when he already loves her and she has him. He's then refusing to get married because he thinks she doesn't love him since she's forcing him to do these things.

That's like asking someone when it's time to start lifting. Its extremely circumstance oriented. Some people's religious, economic, reproduction, and conceptual values dictate this timeline, if at all. Grab a few sociology books OP. There's no finite -yes- or -no- answer for any couple, except those who are adamantly opposed to marriage for a variety of reasons.

what if you don't want to "settle down" but still want the tax and money benefits?

Two people living together without children = marriage does not make sense
When children / the serious thought of children become a plan = marriage

You know, you're right. I've had dogs and I've had a wife. I have better memories of the dogs.

I do wonder if being single makes you happy in the long run. If you look at guys like GMiscer, he says he's glad he escaped the "trap" of marriage, but he says he still has a lot of loneliness in his life. On the other hand, after reading the endless stories of marriages that become nightmares, the very prospect of marriage seems frightening.

I guess you're screwed either way.
