Give you friend a break. He's in the process of planning the biggest mistake of his life. He can't think straight right now.

Weddings suck and being in the wedding party sucks even more. I don't think I'd fly across the country to go to a wedding. No thanks, Jeff.

If I read correctly he dropped you for a "new friend"? If that's the case his fiance' is definitely behind it, and he's probably the S/O of one of bridesmaids. If he simply said "Hey the wedding party is too big, we drew straws and it was you, sorry" I might have been open to going, because mistakes happen. In this case it seems like you were the expendable friend, in which case i'd be done.

Be honest with yourself, do you actually really dislike your friend? I see no reason to ditch the wedding because you aren't a groomsman, thats petty.
Who honestly gives a fuk about it? Being in the 'wedding party' sounds like a bunch of bullchit. Better to show up like a normal guest, eat free food and drink and have fun.
You're taking it way too personally IMO.
For all the retards in here: wedding party means groomsman/bridesmaids you morons lmao. They have to be there for all the extra chit like rehearsal and photos etc etc.

You have every right to be mad, but that's no reason for ending your 14year friendship. That's petty **** women do. Just don't go, but send an inexpensive gift. If he asks why just be honest.

personally I'd pass on the wedding if I could and just go to the divorce party when it happens.

A lot of incredibly immature responses in this thread.
I've been in a very similar situation. In part, it's something you've got to deal with for moving far away and pursuing your goals. It's a trade-off, and what you're giving up is being as close of friends with that group.
I skipped the bachelor party but went to the wedding and had a great time. Really it was a relief for me because I no longer had the obligation to travel a very long distance just for some overrated bachelor party (and all of the other obligations that go along with being in a wedding party).
Look past the transgression, go to the wedding and celebrate with old friends. You'll have fun once you get past being offended.

Sorry to hear that OP.
It is 100% of your buddy's fault. He should not have made a promise to you, then changed it.
That being said, yes you are good friends, and someoneYOUprobably consider a best friend, but you moved away and probably havent been kept in touch as much.
This new guy probably has been around more, and is considered more of a best friend at this time in life. (sorry if that hurts)
Example.
Currently I am planning a wedding next year. I have a problem deciding who should be one of my groomsman. It is between my college roommate, who back 2010 was my best friend. Or my buddy John, who is one of my best friends currently.
You see my college roommate, moved away after college. We kept in touch, but not a much. We hung out maybe once or twice every couple of years. My buddy John, has always been there for me these past few years. When my dad died. When I needed a favor etc. While i haven't known John for quite as long as my buddy in college, I plan on asking him to be my groomsman. He has been more of a friend to me over these last years.
It sucks that he told you that. He should have had a plan for the beginning, and stuck with it. Sounds like he doesnt have anything under control. You can go, have a good time with all your buddies, get drunk, try and pull some tail at the end of the night.
Or you can make an excuse and say you cant make it. Either way is fine.

@OP: If it was me...if the wedding is local and easy to get to, I'd probably still go for the free food/drink assuming I had nothing better to do. If you REALLY care about the friendship, you should talk to him about it and ask wtf happened. If not, just don't go cuz it's pretty disrespectful to do someone who's been your friend for so long like that.

Op, here is an honest break down of whats up:
1.) The fiancée most likely influenced or made the choice for your boy.
2.) You's WERE friends, but time and distance makes all things go away eventually
3.) The fact you will have to travel and spend $$$ on this changes everything.
Honestly, your boy probably just moved on and figure that if he demoted you (extreme d*ck move), the idea of that coupled with having to spend money and all that to travel to the wedding would have you bail so he didn't have to cold reject you. In other words... its a p*ssy move of your boy all around for not just laying it out.
If you want to be mature and not burn a bridge, just politely state you have to do something else then go no contact. It will most likely be the last time you guys talk in the life... but it won't be negative and the friendship can end on a good note. SRS

I get how you feel mane. I had a friend since I was 6 years old never even ask me if I wanted to be in his wedding, and since then hasn't spoken more than 10 words to me. I dont understand how ppl can be such chit friends.

Was in a similar situation (srs)
-I was talked to about being a groomsmen
- wedding is being arranged and I sorta just didn't hear about being a groomsmen anymore
- I'm relief, I don't mind attending, don't care for being part of the show
Ironically marriage lasted 2 years lol ....

OP I agree he disrespected you. His wife or family making him do it is not a good excuse. The guy at least owns you an explanation but clearly he does not value you enough as a friend to give you one. Should you attend or keep contact with him? IMO it depends how much you care for the guy. Personally If i was in your shoes I probably wouldn't attend and let him know in advance and IF he does not call you up to ask why you aren't attending.. you got your answer.
I had a similar situation where my best friend did not even ask me to be a groomsman and I am pretty sure it was because of his wife. I've never brought it up but it's always bothered me. Him and I were real tight friends where we'd spend all our freetime being bros with each other. The bestest bros. Yet during his wedding I was just another fuking guest lmao.

It's disrespectful behavior and you're probably right to not just accept it. Keep in mind, you'll never at 30 years of age make friends like you did when you were 16, though. Still, a lot of people come and go over the years, you need to be careful about who you keep around and if someone is toxic or rude, that's not someone to hang onto.

Lol at your friend. Yes his (unt of a future wife is behind it, but really? You over invite, push the wedding back and then MONTHS later figure out you have too many groomsmen? **** that. Men don't pick how many groomsmen they have it entirely depends on how many bridesmaids she has.
