That thing is 3 million times the size of Earth, and larger than our entire solar system. Absolute unit.

Crazy. I've read about black holes but I still can't seem to comprehend them. Sucking light in, stretching anything that goes in, etc. What the hell is it?

I thought I was entering another HTC thread. I am pleasantly surprised. The Universe is beyond fascinating. Apparently once you're trapped there is no time, there is no direction, no up, no down so if hypothetically you did have the speed to escape you'd just be entering deeper.\

""It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun. And it is one of the heaviest black holes that we think exists. It is an absolute monster, the heavyweight champion of black holes in the Universe."

Terrifying.

So if there's no time you don't age?

What is technically inside of a black hole or the 'other side'? Seems like it would be nothing, as everything entering is smashed into nothingness.

The light you see around the black hole is obviously not the one that‘s pulled in. You can only see light that‘s emitted towards you. It has been proven, I think by Hawkins, that a black hole must also radiate. However, what is seen on the picture is probably hot matter which is just about to be swallowed or spit back into space.

it's matter getting pulled in. As it reaches closer to the event horizon, it speeds up to relativistic speeds (near light speed) , heating up to unimaginable temperatures causing some of the brightest light you'll ever see in the universe

the extreme ends of this are called quasars. Very interesting chit to read about. Basically all i read about all day on quora

The image itself is underwhelming, but you need to think about what it’s an image of. No doubt astrophysicists out there are likely suffering from mild dehydration right now after blowing so many loads to this

Sceptical until I get the details on this photo. Al the cool photos of outer space nasa has released so far are either heavily chopped or downright fake. This is not a conspiracy, they say that themselves.

Lol, you need to learn about the electromagnetic spectrum. Just because NASA tweeks images to show in the visible spectrum does not make them “photoshopped” or “fake”, it just makes you scientifically illiterate. Sure the images dont look like how they would in just the visible spectrum because those images would not be very interesting, actually they would look like nothing in many cases.

Was just going to say this. Not "heavily shopped", they are just adding in the details the camera captured, but the human eye cannot see.
