The cops told them they can either pay them and leave or they will take all of their money and take them to jail. They obviously paid them and the cops let them go.
Another friend of mine was cycling from California across Mexico, his trip wasn't so bad. Nobody messed with him except one day he was cycling through a small town. A jeep filled with people with AK-47's jumped out and started questioning him in Spanish. He vaguely spoke Spanish but was able to tell them he's simply a tourist cycling through Mexico. They went through his phone and told him he could leave, they didn't take anything from him so that was good.
Call me a pussy but unless I'm going to Cabo, I'm not going to Mexico.

The food is mediocre at best, and the people are rude and don’t care for anyone not from Mexico.
Go to Costa Rica or something where it’s safe and people are nice. Money goes further.

As for in Mexico City, I’d recommend going to Bellas Artes, and maybe check out some museums around there(if you like museums). Polanco is also like the boujee part around there. Most tourist things will probably be downtown. Also, you should get some pan dulce while you’re there.
Is Mexico corrupt? Yes, but as long as you mind your business you should be fine, honestly.

after watching many and many gore videos, what i can say that 70% of south america should get nuked, reduced to dust then you can probably travel safely there.
can't understand people who go to literal chitholes when there are other destinations that are a lot better. if you have a fetish to get killed then go for it

I am Mexican, specifically from Monterrey and let's be honest... that **** is dangerous, don't lie to yourselves fellow mexicans. Cartels are the reason I don't visit my family in Mexico anymore, I rather stay up here in the states. Yeah there is a huge problem with guns in America, but those odds are still better than the ****ing cartels in Mexico. My dad always gets hassled for money when he tries to cross the border from America to Mexico to visit his family. And no mexican can argue in good faith that Mexico ever compares to America. There is a reason mexicans try to cross over to America for a better life. If Mexico was so great then why would they cross over?
OP don't take your chances visiting Mexico, there is way better and SAFER things to do. Plus, a lot of cooks in Mexico don't follow any sanitary rules, so that's pretty disgusting.

I went to Cancun back in 2017 not long after they had some shooting in the hotel zone. The resort areas are fine, felt a little shady in downtown Cancun at night (no problems during the day). This one guy followed us 4 (2 couples) at least 3 blocks trying to get us to come into his bar, until we lost him by running into a store. EVERYONE WILL try to shove a menu in your face to get you to come with them. Lots of clubs to party. We went to a strip club where they promised it was free entry outside and then charged the guys 20 bucks. I felt shady to begin with but went in anyway. At least 20 people watching us at all time. As soon as I went into the bathroom the security guy offers me coke and god knows what else. Didn’t want to get caught in Mexico with drugs, even weed. (Smoked some green in the Bahamas with locals but that was fun times). Anyways we left and wandered around downtown trying to find a taxi. Eventually took a bus with some catholic choir girls signing lol. Dropped us off in front of the hotel.
The excursions were awesome and totally safe for us. Went to chicken itza, and also to la isla mujeres. Had a great time there and absolutely no problems. The guides were great on the bus to chicken itza. One of the kids on the exercursion with us (think he was 18 or so) got arrested for drinking. Parents had to bail them out and pay 300 bucks or something on the island to get him out. Scams everywhere.
If you’re going to be traveling outside of those tourist areas, just do anything you can to minimize how much you stand out. Don’t become a target.

Went to cancun for a week and I heard its been getting increasingly dangerous. Not once did I feel unsafe though, even though I stayed in an airbnb near downtown. You do get hassled though, I think the biggest thing you can do is brush up on your spanish

Mexico had its highest murder rate ever last year with 33,000+. The USA with more than twice the population only has 1/3rd of that on average.
If you toss in kidnapping, extortion, assault, robbery, rape, carjacking, etc into the math. You're looking at a 5-10% chance of being the victim of violent crime each year. Ya... fk that.
The problem with places like Mexico is that when things go bad... they go real bad... and you're basically on your own. It's not like the USA where the police will be out looking for you. All levels of infrastructure in Mexico are corrupt as chit so you're truly fkd unless you have money/connections.

Although I agree with your last point, almost all the murders are cartel-relatedWTF are you talking about. The odds of dying in a terrorist attack in the USA is so low it is essentially zero.

I think you have a higher chance of being involved on a random terrorist attack on the united states than actually getting killed on mexico.
anyway, phuck you guys, we dont need your tourist money, *******s.
