Full disclosure, anything I've found suggests people were slightly more active in the 1950s (although once you hit the 1970s and the obesity rates started skyrocketing, people were more-or-less the same as they are today, if not less active; more gym memberships now and such).
I'll come back to this tomorrow when I have some time, but if I'm wrong, I'm wrong and I'll say as much.

The problem boils down to Sucrose/sugar as much as anything. We shouldn't be eating it very much, we're eating tons of it.
Yes, calories matter, to a degree, but they are not this end-all-be-all people promote and think of them as. Don't tell me 1,000 calories from sugar is no different than 1,000 calories of steak or 1,000 calories from grass fed butter.
I tend to follow Dr. Jason Fung, which there are many detractors or nay-sayers there, your call. He's got many studies, human ones, that he cites.

30% due to increase in sedentary lifestyle due to instant gratification types of technology. Want to watch a movie at home in 1990? Walk outside, go to blockbuster, pay $5 for some chitty vhs that is going to have tracking lines and probably jam up your vhs player. Want to be movie in 2019? Press a button on your remote to start Netflix and you're good. I remember like 10 years ago when "binge watching" a show was a guilty pleasure that I could feel was unhealthy strange behavior. Now after years of training it's a fun frequent passtime.
30% imo is due to changed food culture of Americans. Portions are bigger, fast food has slowly become more accept to eat at a higher frequency.
Last 40% is probably due to decreased amounts of exercise in the form of work (manufacturing, construction, shipping, etc) and recreation. I feel like everybody in 1990 even adults had sports or outdoor hobbies that had them moving more. Go to a park now if there are adults there with their kids they are just binge eating potato chips at the BBQ or standing around while their kids ride the swings. When they used to be riding bikes and throwing the football around and chit. When the last time you saw a group of adults playing touch football at a BBQ? You don't... Nobody wants to run around and let people see their fat parts flopping around. With regard to work, almost all physical jobs have become automated and have specialized lifting equipment. Most of these jobs have simply been outsourced anyway.

in case you missed this point let me say it againmy theoryis that schools have moved away from and even discourage competition which is detrimental to boys and beneficial to girls, this lack of competition growing up is not good for the development of boys. This is a testable theory but it would take a lifetime to study so chances of an extensive study being done on this isn't likely. The easiest way to test this would be to compare the test levels of kids that grew up playing sports and those that didn't but you couldn't really conclude anything from that other than there may be a correlation to playing sports and higher test but wouldn't be able to go as far as saying they could identify it being the cause
this cover it well enough?

No one has mentioned yet that for a lot of people gaining weight isn't a big one time event, but more like a gradual accretion of picking up a few pounds around the holidays or vacation every year and never losing that weight.
Don't see how economics can't be a factor. Something like roughly half of US workers earn $32K (or less) per year. Meanwhile good luck finding a decent apartment in most cities under $1K a month. Rising cost of health insurance/health care. Most families both adults work so it is tough to manage shopping/cooking very well + fresh foods spoil vs. frozen/processed which are good for a long time. So take out/fast food or putting something in the microwave are probably the most common "meal solutions" for those that can't afford to buy "dinner in a box" kits.

For a class project, Haub limited himself to less than 1,800 calories a day. A man of Haub's pre-dieting size usually consumes about 2,600 calories daily. So he followed a basic principle of weight loss: He consumed significantly fewer calories than he burned.
For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.
Two-thirds of his total intake came from junk food. He also took a multivitamin pill and drank a protein shake daily. And he ate vegetables, typically a can of green beans or three to four celery stalks.
His body mass index went from 28.8, considered overweight, to 24.9, which is normal. He now weighs 174 pounds.
But you might expect other indicators of health would have suffered. Not so.
Haub's "bad" cholesterol, or LDL, dropped 20 percent and his "good" cholesterol, or HDL, increased by 20 percent. He reduced the level of triglycerides, which are a form of fat, by 39 percent.

The rise in not chewing enough while eating, the rise in mindless eating(eating while driving, watching tv, walking from a-b), the rise in not sitting down as a family to eat dinner, the rise in eating out in general, hormone changes, food additives, everything now being drenched in mayo based sauces, portion sizes and plate sizes increasing, more sedentary lifestyles combined with more convenience in getting food at all times of day and night. The rise in “foodies” who always wait until the next over the top meal they can gorge on(I’m guilty of this), the rise in ages that people are getting married(essentially meaning later in life that they start sitting down to dinner with their family and a higher age that they’re eating out and partying and getting drunk food).
These are just a small few of the reasons that are often looked. The main takeaway? There’s not just one thing. It’s a product of our society and it’s not going away anytime soon. Get used to it and do what you can to keep yourself healthy

The average person comes home and lays on the coach to watch tv while they surf the web on their phone/tablet/laptop. Then they get into their bed and do it even more until they sleep.
The other thing being the type of jobs in the US. The percentage of manufacturing jobs in the US greatly dropped off in the early 1990s and transitioned into more service roles. I'd imagine all these service jobs have people sit or stand around all day.

The biggest driver has been technology, which has driven rotting to a new state of prestige and luxury. Just LOL at how lazy people are. BRB driving to the gym and bloatmaxxing. Also, people are so lazy thesedays that they can't be bothered to meet up if there is nothing in it for them. This mentality is resulting in more isolation and increased dependency on technology.
And let's not forget the:
1. Genetic modification of grain, vegetable and fruit crops. I'm sure these have lower nutritional value than in the past.
2. Massive push in cereals and dairy which has expanded throughout the world. Now countries in Asia are getting fatter. Asians are actually busier running around to show people face-time/ respect
3. Processed food options for everything. Be it ready to eat, heat up or take away. Cooking at home is the best option, even though it is still expensive and produce is lower in quality than 10-20 years ago
4. Over realiance on drug fed chickens. It blows my mind how chicken has taken over in such a strong way. Chickens are absolutely massive now and dirt cheap

After falling in disgrace to a manmore, a ravaged manlet would not hesitate to come from behind and land a sucker punch/ swing with a rock to the back of a manmore's head. also, people used to eat 3 meals a day. now there's snacks in between, foods/drinks full of bad sweeteners.
not enough fasting and the war on FATS definitely has to be the main cause though. even 50 years ago, humans were following a modified version of intermittent fasting.
without fasting you won't enter advanced auto****y. without advanced auto****y, your body isn't getting rid of old and dead cells that slowly destroy your body. imagine not changing your car oil for 5 years then suddenly getting an oil change? the damage has already been done and is almost irreversible. that's why cancer is on the rise.

To the last point - drive thru's were bad enough, now we can sit on the couch and have 3,500 calories of burgers, pizzas, wings and shakes delivered to our door.

fast food is groce (fake meat especially calling out mcd's/subway)
there needs to be more transparency from the gov.
certain processed food is tolerable (for those unaware)

People are getting less nutrients from fruit and vegetables because they're not eating them. In Australia, only 4% of adults are getting the recommended 5 serves (2.5 cups) of vegetables a day, and that's down to 0.4% in this board's demographic, 15-25yo males. It doesn't really matter what's in the food if you don't eat it.
Processed food options for everything. Be it ready to eat, heat up or take away.
This is definitely so. As food is processed, by weight it has less micronutrients and fibre and more calories. A pound of whole wheat and a pound of wholemeal bread and a pound of white bread and a pound of doughnuts are not the same thing.People like to demonise a particular food or nutrient. Fat, no wait saturated fat, no wait it's carbs, well actually it's simple carbs, no hang on it's high fructose corn syrup, don't be silly it's - and so on. The fact is though that most Westerners are overweight but undernourished. They have stacks of calories, but not as many vitamins and minerals as they should. This is why my dietary advice to my gym members is: if 80% of your food spending is at the greengrocer, butcher and fishmonger, you're probably doing alright.

Dramatic changes in diet over a short period of time do not mimic dietary habits that span numerous years.
I don't think healthful dietary habits should be so hard to figure out as they can sometimes seem. Eat primarily whole foods and limit your intake of processed foods. Beans, fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, grains, and etc contain life and life sustaining properties.
Fruits and vegetables breath. Biological activity is taking place in them. Phytonutrients protect their skin from the sun. They are alive.
A lot of people primarily subsist on food that does not contain life, never contained any life, or if it did the only life in it at the time they consume it is bacterial (flesh).
Whole foods contain their own digestive properties like fiber, water, and fat. Bacteria in the large intestine produces beutyric acid from fiber, which is used by cells in the stomach to improve nutrient absorption and keep toxins from entering the body through the stomach (as well as providing them with the energy to accomplish this).
Nutrients are needed by our vital organs to function and do their jobs, and to say that a thousand calories is a thousand calories belies this fact. Organs and the endocrine system need essential components to balance biological systems that can indirectly and directly impact body composition, and certainly impact biological function as we experience it (regularity, sleep, cognition, respiration, circulation and etc).
There is a relationship between food and biological function that impacts activity levels. Eating high calorie foods devoid of micronutrients and digestive properties places a burden on the body, offers little in return, and wastes precious energy that can be used for physical activity. How many people want to get out for a walk or show up at the gym when their head is foggy, their stomach is full of blood to digest their laborious meal, and lethargy is overwhelming them? Now what if they have diabetes or hypertension on top of that?
I know Miscers are a special breed but most people are going to sit down in front of the tv and maybe crack a beer, or smoke a l. Throw some kids into the mix and/or a demanding career/academia and forget about it.
Tl;dr
Lack of emphasis on whole foods is to blame, imo, as well as laziness.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.
