Why do so many people do the minimum at jobs these days?

Its like nobody wants to work at all and just abuse the system. Brb eating snacks every 2 hours and taking 20 breaks per day. Brb only working 2 hours. Yet they never get in trouble for it.

Many companies have made it clear that hard work won’t be rewarded with more pay or a better position. In fact, it often gets you more work and responsibilities for the same pay. Why stand out from the herd then?
The last big raise I got was because the company found out I was going to get an outside offer and they matched it, not a reward for my good work.

My assumption is because your wage packet won't be increased by 50% if you're 50% more productive. However your wage packet will remain the same if you're 25% less productive.

Very few companies show loyalty and reward good employees for performance. They are happy to milk every ounce of work out of them while giving them a measlie 2% raise a year (if lucky) I'm pretty fortunate that I have a good boss, but the company sucks. I was taken on as a contract employee in 2013 with the promise of permanent hire in 6 months to a year. Here I am in 2019 and I'm still contracted despite everything I did in the beginning.
So my loyalty has not been rewarded and I'm only still here due to the salary and proximity to home.

Combination of they can get away with it and they’re probably not working in something they’re actually passionate about.

My generation (millenials, and a good portion of Gen X'ers for that matter) were sold the lie that genuine hard work, high quality skills, and putting your mind to accomplishing things/getting somewhere in your career were all that mattered, or at least what mattered the most. The education system and society as a whole constantly assured of us of this. What most of us realized in adulthood is that that was a huge load of crap. 95% of the time, what gets people things like promotions, or even simply preferrential work assignments/placements, has absolutely nothing to do with any of that.
It's all about who you know and who you blow, with very little exception. Some people are able to embrace that and not let it bother them, but many people simply have their souls and ambitions crushed by it. Hell, being a crappy worker is often rewarded. It's hard to give much of a shiit beyond "the minimum" when you spend years upon years being a top 5% all around worker. Meanwhile, some retards routinely take a few paid months off over bs injuries, get cake placements/assignments at work because they're crybabies and/or are simply incapable of anything else, call in sick constantly, etc. Yet nothing happens to most of them for any of it, and some are even promoted by claiming various bs cards.
Edit: On a side note, as alluded to by a couple other here - not only does putting in maximum effort at a work place seldom yield appropriate rewards in and of itself, but it raises the bar of expectations for you personally just to keep your job. Once you've established yourself as a great reliable worker who will do any given task with superior quality without complaint, that's what becomes expected of you as the minimum. Meanwhile, people who establish themselves as worthless shiitbags from the start but manage not to get canned have their expectations reflect such.

That's funny coming from you, because you do the bare minimum (actually you do nothing at all) to improve your life situation and just complain how unfair things are.

"So why is promoting over-performing Losers logical? The simple reason is that if you over-perform at the Loser level, it is clear that you are an idiot. You’ve already made a bad bargain, and now you’re delivering more value than you need to, making your bargain even worse. Unless you very quickly demonstrate that you know your own value by successfully negotiating more money and/or power, you are marked out as an exploitable clueless Loser."

Employer Loyalty to Employee = None
Cliffs:
- Worked at company for 8.5 years
- Had three positions there (two in one department, interviewed for second job, not promoted)
- Third job was also interview for new department, promoted three years into this job (fought hard for it)
- Had 5-6 interview for other jobs in other departments (got none)
- Applied for internal dept job, wasn't given interview
- Had to leave to get a new job
Why should anyone stay for that nonsense?

Because they don't realize it's the ones who stand out in a productive and positive way that actually grow the fastest and get the special treatment from direct (or even indirect) leadership and other departments.
The ones who "do the minimum" at work tend to have a victimization attitude, come from a non-humble background, dislike the job as whole, potentially don't view the job as an applicable part of their career (IE not giving a chit about working at McDonalds because you're building your career around IT), or are already on their way out. Also nepotism (including publicly unknown nepotism) is a real thing.
