That being said, it isn't impossible to make it these days. It's just getting harder. However, I believe that in about 20 years, it will be effectively impossible for someone who isn't prodigiously successful to independently own their own property in major metropolitan areas.

It's a little crazy to have virtually no money in a bank account. Life happens. Bills still need to be paid regardless of your circumstances. I'd personally advocate everyone has AT LEAST $10k in your bank account as an emergency fund, then invest and consume whatever else is left on top of that.
What blows my mind the most is debt. People are willing to go to debt on technology, or even a Starbucks lotte. Don't even get me started about overpriced cars that people can't afford and student loans that are 100%-200% of their starting salaries outside of school / college.
People I've talked with that are in their mid-late 20's or early 30's usually have a brand-new car's worth in student loan debts (usually more sadly), on top of financing a brand new (and rapidly depreciating) $25k+ car, on top of a living situation that is too expensive for their own good due to jumping the gun on a new house or something similar, on top of needing the newest phone, on top of going out every weekend or two for overpriced drinks and foods. "Normal" sucks, and people need to stop living like they're making $300k, when they're only making $50k.
I don't say this out of envy. I say this out of pity, as they're gonna wind up pulling from their retirement accounts to cover life's issues, they're gonna reach their 40's and have a net worth that's no where near 6 figures, and if worse comes to worse, not have enough for retirement by the time they're 60.
