The same applies to men, but since youthfulness in men is NOT nearly as prime a component for female desire and the fact that men mature later, a man's bell curve begins later and ends later and the slopes are different. Like with women, after 45 the slope increases quickly. Kyle Aaron is right about why midlife crises are centered around the middle forties. That's when almost all men realize that they've become all but invisible to women in their prime. The few exceptions merely prove the rule.
In my experience, women are done around 40 (give or take) and men are done around 50 (give or take). By 40, women look their age or worse. By 50, men look their age or worse. I'm not saying you are doomed to be alone after those ages. I'm saying that you're no longer in the running for partners in their primes unless you have something unique beyond physical appearance (such as $1B in the bank) to offer.
There have been plenty of surveys showing the differences in most desired age of mates for both men and women at various ages. Women always stick to their age range, preferring an older man. Men always prefer early 20's.

I worked at a travel insurance company where I would spend all day selling insurance policies to couples. Both applicants had to write their age on the application (to calculate cost). In 2 years, I can’t remember a single instance where the wife was significantly older than the husband. Not one.
On the other hand, it was pretty common to see 10-15 year gaps in the favour of the husband. I never saw anything crazy like a 60 year old man with a 20 year old woman, but lots and lots and lots of 48-36, 39-29, 35-28, etc.
