Most of my family is from guadalajara and CDMX and I go there several times per year. If it wasn't to visit family I would avoid mexico all together. It's just not safe. Last time I was in mexico city I wouldn't even leave the house at evening/nighttime and my cousin lives near paseo de la reforma (nice part of city). I remember being a kid (15+ years ago) and spending summers in Guadalajara and the crime was nowhere near this bad. Might be some nostalgia though because I was beaten up and robbed a few times even as a teenager. My uncle owns a water delivery service and last year his home was broken into and family held hostage at gunpoint until he paid ransom srs.
All of the idiots ITT trying to convince you it's safe are delusional and have no idea what they are talking about. If you are American or a tourist who doesn't speak Spanish fluently (knowing basic phrases doesn't count) you are seen as a potential victim and even though you may not be harmed you will get scammed/harrassed and for sure ripped off on prices for goods and services. Mexicans view most gringos as people who like to spend money frivolously so they have no problem exploiting them. ALL of the famous landmarks/sights/resorts are overpriced and full of scam artists and people looking to take advantage of you and separate you from your money. Talk to any Mexican currently living in mexico and they will be honest about the crime and corruption in all areas of the country.
It's a shame because the country is so naturally beautiful and the people who aren't trying to scam you are genuinely kind and friendly. But mexico is a lost cause, it is beyond corrupt and politically/economically will probably never change. The people that live there have accepted that and the ones that don't try to sneak across the border into US.

Just got back from mexico a couple weeks ago. Layover in mexico city so me and two guys left the airport and started walking around until maybe 11pm. Got some street food, and my friend bought some healing tobacco from some guy in an alleyway. Spent the night in the airport and then flew into cancun in the morning. Met some drug dealers while we were there and they had rooms at multiple resorts, and they accused my little brother of stealing his "psychiatric pills" that were "wrapped in a little plastic baggie" but nothing ever escalated beyond that because i saw him digging around in an ash tray.
Overall i would say its not too sketchy if you are a little vigilant, and not associating with the wrong people or hanging around in the wrong places. Theres definitely a danger factor considering the mexican marines routinely walk up and down the beach in full gear with ar-15's and patrol the streets in front of the hotels with humvees mounted with turrets but i wouldnt say its a place to avoid at all costs. I probably would have had a way better time in florida though to be honest.

You should be good in CDMX and Yucatan. Tbh I don't know how police are down in Yucatan, I know it's a state that tries to maintain a good image for tourism and always has been one of the most peaceful states but cops always are kunts and extort you all over Mexico, just drive as safely and cautious as possible.

My former boss would go into situations knowing he was prey and acting accordingly. That other group of people think that by keeping their head down they somehow magically aren't prey any more. That airheadedness and lack of vigilance is what makes people targets. I tend to think the reason I haven't ran into chit situations like others i know is because I'm generally on my game and listen to my instincts. I'm not the gazelle wandering around solo and oblivious that the lion is specifically looking for.

OP if you ever go back in the near future try out Pachuca Hidalgo it's north east of Mexico city. It is an old mining town and there are some cool ass parks around where you can camp and ride horses.
