It's definitely not a a time consuming part of a mag change, but it's not only quicker with a button,it changes my grip with the paddle, leaving one more variable to "worry" about.

So . . . plumber came out to replace the water heater under warranty (had to pay labor but better than a flooded basement). Got the old unit outside and the anode rod was completely gone. Just had the wire there attached to the hex bolt on top. There's my answer the the tank failing.
Not sure why none of this ever came to the forefront when I was researching water softeners. All you seem to hear is that they make your water heater last longer by removing the scale buildup. But, apparently, water softeners can eat the anode rods faster because of the increased conductivity of the water. Nice. Now that I know this, it will be on the yearly scheduled maintenance list to check.
Seriously, as long as I have been around and owned water heaters, I have never replaced an anode rod. Guess I'll be doing that moving forward.
