thats the most dumbass answer ive ever heard in my life. Why would you voluntary put yourself in a situation where you are going to most likely have to kill someone - when there are no major wars on. I could understand it if youre protecting your country like back in WW2 - but what kind of wars are on now? if you speak to anyone in the military, they nearly all disagree massively with the gulf wars, iraq wars and everything going on in the middle east and agree its mostly about asset control and oil.

Im not saying I dont have mad respect for military guys. But the answer above bugs me. When I was in the application process for the Royal Navys Fleet Air Arm I was asked that question and my response was something along the lines of, "obviously I wouldnt seek pleasure out of it or strive for it and I'm sure I wouldnt feel good afterwards, but I understand that it would be my job to follow orders, not to question them". The guys interviewing me said it was the best response they ever had because it shows im human and not a psychopath. Normally all answers are like "yep thats cool. No problemo"

This is mostly true, but then we send our soldiers off to die in some third world chithole full of oil that has nothing to do with actually defending the country. That's the problem I have with the current use of the military. The military should be dedicated to actually just defending our borders, not adventurist wars of conquest. It would cost a fukk of a lot less, but there's too much loss of profit in the military industrial complex that runs the country.

Regardless, I still have the utmost respect for the soldiers that have to do that. War is a failure of leadership, not the soldiers.

its not really the fault of the soldiers', its the fault of an apathetic society that can give two sh!ts about the lives and deaths of their soldiers. a democratic society can blame no one but their own inaction when the government runs amuck. you think soldiers enjoy leaving their families behind for year long tours; fighting wars with completely nebulous objectives?

As a fellow tax payer and can safely say that OP is a *******. Soldiers don't beg for your respect. I suppose you provide more value to the country in terms of upholding freedoms? If you have such a problem why don't you stop paying taxes.

It's a lot different in some countries. The military is where the wealthy go. I think in the us there are so many differnt economic opportunities that's only those really patriotic and dedicated forego private sector jobs for military. Also, a lot of the wars we fight are very hard to connect the dots as to giving us freedom, and more hostility from us, so it might be also why not the majority of really smart people go into military. Officer school is very different though, those people are damn smart.
