that's why you always have family to back you up. she should have told her parents, especially her father, instead of those campus police *******s. there's a reason why you need to hold tight with your family and it's because of cases like this where the system fails you.

future 2 sons 1 daughter crew checking in

and yes she clearly paid the toll for being stupid af, but to her defense this imbecile must have been a real sweet talker and good with words as his OTHER gf drove him to the victims home before he killed her

It's pretty known the higher ups on a campus want to keep everything under a rug and want to prevent bad publicity.
Why couldn't she just go to the regular police?

She dated Charles Manson because it thrills her. Charles Manson behaved as Charles Manson. It is not anyone else fault here.

I feel terrible for her family, but jesus christ at her poor decision making. Dating some 37 year old ex-con who's spent a decade in prison.

I would hope that she had no idea, and when she found out that's when the relationship ended.

Rowland had confronted McCluskey outside of her residence call while she was on the phone with her mother. He forced her into the back seat of a car and shot her multiple times, according to the university timeline.
Holy chit, her poor Mother is going to need therapy for life. This is unreal...

EDIT: What the fuk??
A review of the killing found that University of Utah officers did not know how to look up criminal background or parole information, CNN affiliate KUTV said.

the university refused to respond to numerous reports of stalking, abuse, intimidation and dating violence and other behaviors prohibited under the federal Title IX law
"I'm worried because I've been working with the campus police at the U, and last Saturday I reported and I haven't gotten an update," she told Salt Lake City Police dispatch on October 19.
"They haven't updated or done anything," she added.
Personally I really hate hearing about universities kangaroo court bullchit where they act like they're in their own jurisdiction. The campus police should have been all over this when they got a report about it.

They should have contacted actual state police and figured out what was going on.
Melvin Rowland, 37, was a convicted sex offender, according to the Utah Department of Corrections
Instead a convicted felon with sex offender status murders the student they ignored. School should get hosed for that

This is where I am. If you complain to your campus police multiple times and they do nothing, why would you not then go to the regular police? If my daughter complained about a psycho and the campus police didn't do anything we'd be at the real police department getting a restraining order ASAP. Not that restraining orders stop people from being murdered, but it may have helped if she'd done it right away.

I'm really not trying to victim blame. It's a horrendous tragedy for her loved ones. But that doesn't mean you deserve 56 million dollars. She definitely holds some responsibility for terrible decision making by dating a man 20 years older who was a convicted offender and had spent a freaking decade in prison. FFS.

Spot on. People are assuming the background story, my first thought was that it was weird but for all we know they met at Starbucks and went on one casual date. People lie about their age and predatory individuals can have extremely charming personalities.

All around horrible situation. Not sure as to what suing anyone would accomplish. The real conversation here is how difficult it actually is to obtain a restraining order in some states as well as how useless the restraining orders actually are.

At the end of the day, if someone wants to stalk another person and kill them, the scary reality is its hard to stop.

we can talk all day about poor decisions and why she chose to date this guy but that isn't the point.

the point is she contacted the campus police multiple times and they didn't seem to do anything. as soon as they found out he was a convicted sex offender this should have been taken seriously.

Have you looked at the article yet, or anyone citing how she did contact the police? This is the issue with 'campus police' and an environment where you're told to report issues to the campus first. There is absolutely a reason for the school to get a slap in the face for providing a false sense of security and not immediately taking a life threatening situation seriously.

So you arent going to victim blame... but someone who doesn't know the criminal background of a person they just met kinda derserves to get murderd. looool ok

I feel like you're really getting hung up on this. As if its a plot by the parents to rid themselves of their daughter and gain millions. Reality check: huge institutions and companies aren't going to give a fuk when you tell them what they did is wrong. Honestly how are you supposed to penalize an organization worth hundreds of millions of dollars??? The precedent in the legal world seems to be fining them a **** ton of money, which is what the parents want to do.

and once again, since you clearly refuse to read the article or inform yourself before commenting

Police, including campus police, have no duty to protect anyone. Supreme court ruled on thatva long time ago. Cops job is to make arrests and take reports. Thats it. You are responsible for your own well being

Police probably didn't have enough evidence to charge him or put him back in prison, at best they could have put on a restraining order for all that would do, as his intent seemed to be clear. More than likely they treated it like a domestic abuse case is my guess, she was in a relationship with this guy. Everything will be dragged out in the suit, the good and the bad tho.
