LOL at thinking soccer is here to stay. This happens every World Cup, and it's immediately forgotten about in 3 months once we get real sports on TV again.

That being said, I think soccer may be more popular in a generation. The NFL has had a stranglehold on US sports for two generations, but now as that product's starting to die, you're starting to see other sports get more eyeballs as people look for a new sport to fill that vacuum. The MLB is fukking dead (where they get the money to offer those huge contracts is beyond me), but the NBA, hockey, soccer, even fukking Twitch are all getting more views. Which ones will stick, I don't know, but there are more viewers and more potential players interested in alternative sports besides football/basketball for the first time in decades. Maybe if we keep on pumping children full of soy, we'll have a bunch of soccer fans in 20 years.

And LOL at Euro****s saying "Americans will never be good at soccer!" You're telling me that an NFL running back with this kind of speed, balance, and agility wouldn't fukking wreck on a soccer pitch. Imagine he's dribbling a ball on his foot during this run, and you can virtually see him carving his way through a soccer defense.

When you play sports you can do through out your time at school are they really that expensive?

I helped someone sign their kid up for soccer actually recently since he was computer illiterate and that **** was pretty expensive. It was around $2k for the season in fees and the jerseys and what not were another $600 or so.

Some other dude I know is constantly crying about how much it costs him for his kid to play Hockey. I'm not sure how much truth there is in what hes saying but its always something insane like 10K. Hes probably just talking out of his ass though

depends on the school. In high school I had a coach tell me and a few other kids hoping to play, "it is suggested that parents donate $500 to the booster club to help pay for the team's fees. some families pay that and some pay more. those kids will get to play. I have to play them. if you don't you'd better be the best on the team by a large margin.".

don't know about college. it's probably part of tuition but I can't speak to that exp.

They can also play high school soccer but you will not be recruited from a high school team. If a kid wants to go pro they have to play private club ball which will cost you thousands in club fees in addition to travel, lodging, time sink, etc.

Meanwhile a kid wanting to turn pro or get a scholarship playing football, baseball or basketball only needs to perform at his high school (mostly) at taxpayers expense because colleges send recruiters to every corner of the country.

Soccer is cheap to play for fun but its far more expensive to succeed in at a high level.

I think its because women's soccer is a flagship title 9 sport and they get scholarships and continue to play into an older age instead of switching to football, baseball, etc. like boys do. I should have noted the difference between mens and womens soccer in this country. We probably put more emphasis on girls soccer here than they do in every other country, which is why our girls always take the piss out of their girls. Our men would do the same if the situation was reversed.

I played both football and soccer growing up. I was always the fastest and one of the more athletic kids on any team I played growing up. Dat dere genetics (football, baseball, and soccer for one year)

I played football for 2 years and then decided to try soccer. I dominated the first local league just by being a little more advanced physically than the competition, so I joined a travel league that same year which I did very well in but was more competitive. That was the only year I played soccer... I so much preferred the physicality and intensity of football and even the difference of the teammates and coaches involved in the sport was noticeable for me.

So I gave it a shot for year and stuck with football every year after that.

I don’t know now but my local rec league when I was like 12 was $$$$.

They are all apart of youth nation champs and state cups.

AYSO has tons of invitationals.

We won our league and got invited to like 10 invitationals. Where each one is $200+per player over multiple days hrs away.

It reminds me of south park where the boys kept winning and had to keep playing and lost their summer.

I played football to a decent level here in the UK until age 18. It was always like £150-£300 max per season, which included the playing kit. You just needed your own playing boots and shinguards, and that was it. If you were picked up by a semi-pro team, then they would start paying you.

In what loony world does it cost 2k for a kid to play a sport? This literally is a poverty sport, all you really need is 2 goals and a ball. I must have misunderstood, not sure if srs.

Also, lol at the braindead ameri****s in here vastly underestimating the skill levels and technique required to play real football.

The athletics talent pool in the US is scary, so if it actually became popular then you should have a strong as fuk team. But it's unlikely to happen, American culture just doesn't gel with the sport. Even the MLS feels corny as fuk, weird fans, weird commentators, team names, it's like watching some pointless charity match. You can't go from giant steroid heads, beyonce at half-time, commercials every 30 seconds etc, to actually sitting down for 90 minutes and being able to appreciate the genius of a Messi or Zidane.
Never take it personal, even when it is.
