buying a house is stupid

i live in a 2000 sq foot 1 million house for $600 a month

rent out a room but i literally use the whole house cuz the owners are always at work for 12 hours lmao

last week the dryer broke costed them 1k for a new one, last year they spent 15k on a new roof


property tax
maintenance
mortgage(25 year jail sentence)


ill never buy a house

I've built over 140k in equity owning a house the last 5.5 years. Put roughly 22k into it in total.

How? If you need to get out you can sell your house or rent it out and hire a company to manage it. Not hard.

I buy S&P as well, just the fact that you debate how good of an investment a home is already shows you that it's better than renting (where you get 0% return).

A house is a place to live.

They shouldnt be viewed as an investment but can certainly be one.

Either way you need a place to live.

15k roof will last like 25 years.

Dryers can be had for a few hundred.

true dat but not everyone wants to live in a room with a random couple.

However, if i could live in my own apartment for 600/month, iw ould do that instead of buying...but 600 cant even get a decent studio apt.

Mortgagecells don’t realize that rent and mortgage ain’t same

Rents cheaper. No property tax. No home insurance. No fixing broken ****. Inb4 “it’s built in” no it isn’t, not with the way most people buy houses.


So that extra $500 or whatever you save a month can go into ACTUAL assets that grow. Stocks, bonds, etc. while you pay for interest on a house that may or may not appreciate. Oh and if you lose your job you are royally ****ed


Just lol at being a home owner. Does it make sense in some cases? Yes

But if you have a 30 year mortgage, pay PMI, or any of that crap then lol you’re getting played

Exactly this. It’s not an asset. It’s not making you money. You’re always going to pay for a place to live even when your mortgage is paid off. That roof, that new flooring, that remodeling job? You’re sinking money into an “investment” that more often than not is just a money sink compared to true investing

For long term considerations, Buying is almost always better than renting.

If you are going to be in a place short term...renting is better usually.

Depends on how handy you are, and how much work you're able/willing to put into it yourself.


20's - 40's and too lazy/unskilled to keep the costs of house maintenance down - rent an apartment.

30's - 80's and too lazy/unskilled - rent a townhome

20's - 40's and able to handle the work of owning a home/enjoying it - buy a home.


Anyone buying a home over the age of 45 or so better be doing so while loaded enough to do minimal work to it. I love it now, but would probably rather die than start fresh with all the home improvement/maintenance stuff well into my 40's, let alone beyond that.
