The Dept of Education has done nothing but dumb graduates down, slowly and surely, year by year, yet talk about reducing it or eliminating it and you're a nut. Go figure.

This thread again...

My gf is a teacher, she usually gets to work at 730 and leaves 430ish. She does all her grading and class prep at home, has to come in for meetings and parent things u paid. Doesn’t get anywhere close to whatever wage OP said. Being a teacher is hard af, strong misc mentality.

The CEO isn't being paid with taxpayer dollars.

There's also definitely CEOs worth that. If you're Tim Cook and Apple was worth $282b when you took over and $1t only 8 years later, you DEFINITELY brought more than $30m value to that company.

Here in south florida teachers can decide if they want to get paid year round or get paid till summer ends. Most decide to get paid year round to have an income flow every week.

I don't think they know the full extent the job entails especially with all the new standards when they go into teaching. I mean you have 18/19 year olds saying "I loved my teachers, i want to become a teacher and make that same impact" And while going through college, the standards are getting changed and even society as whole changes. I mean, a teacher used to be able to smack a kids butt. Now they can't even touch a kid in any manner without a potential law suit and firing. Stories of kids stabbing others with pencils and scissors, coming at other kids or teachers with padlocks, and teacher's with very limited powers to do jack all to stop it except wag their finger.

Pretty sure the 18-19 year olds deciding to go to college to become a teacher didn't imagine how bad the bad can me, and just assumed "some kids will be brats but I'm sure i will get through to them"

Total hours/year = 1,400

Holidays = 17 days = 119 hrs
3 weeks of PTO = 105 hrs

Avg teacher $/hr salary = $51/hr

That's a $106k/year job @ full time


For comparison:
Typical 40 hr/week job = 2080 hrs
Holidays = 5 days = 40 hrs
3 weeks PTO = 105 hrs

2080-40-105= 1935 hrs

You can't discuss salary without including the intangibles:
1. With the exception of a few in-service days, you're off when the kids are off. If you have school-aged kids, that's essentially free day care.

2. Job security. Layoffs do happen, but they're generally pretty rare and very small. In Texas at least, teachers are on an annual contract, so they can't be laid off during the school year. The contracts auto-renew, so if you haven't gotten notice by April 1, you know you're good for another full year. If you do get notice, you've essentially got 4 months advance notice to try to find another job.

3. Portability. You can essentially pick up and move to any other district in the state and keep your seniority and benefits. Moving to another state generally just means taking a couple of classes to get certified in the new state.

How long have you been an engineer bro? It gets better as you move up. Been an engineer for 20+ yrs. The first 5-10 years is a lot of work but it also depends on where you are in the organization. It gets better and easier. Hard to say the same for teachers, because for most of them, they do the same chit from day 1 of work until they retire.

I agree though, that there are teachers who doesn't have dedications but there are good ones too.

10 year engineer here. I always tell people this, i dont think there is a job in america where you can make this kind of money and still have a life. Im in construction and work 50hr weeks. No OT. I have friends who are accountants make less than i do working 100hr weeks. Engineering will get you a work/life balance. No, you wont be super wealthy. You need to be an executive or owner of a company for that.

I definitely agree with this. It confuses kids between the way they are brought up from home and the way they should act in public/school. Because for them, its just not about teaching, they also are genuinely concern about the welfare fof their students. I bet they can tell based on how the kids act and perform in school.

I guess for kids who have irresponsible parents, teachers are more of a parent to them. I dont think that's something that we can put monetary value at.

I am instagram friends with 3 teachers I went to high school with. One of them has been in Spain since school got out basically. Spring break was Cancun. One of them has been in Paris for two weeks. I have friends who are accountants and engineers who don't seem to make as much as the fkkn elementary teachers I know. And those people MIGHT get 3 weeks vacation at this point in their career, not 10 weeks.

If basing stuff off people I know is dumb, then ALL the people complaining ITT about the workload of their wife/gf/etc have the same issue I guess?

If someone goes to school for 7 years and earns a PHD, they should be doing something more valuable to society than babysitting 2nd Graders. Pay should be based on the job you're doing, not the credentials you have earned which may or may not have anything to do with your job.

Teachers are underpaid in many areas of the US, but any teacher who receives $70k and full benefits with 2 weeks off for Winter Break and a week off for Spring and 12 weeks off during Summer really has no reason to gripe, even if they do have a tough job. This is a better benefits package than literally any other profession in the US.

the two teachers that I know after 5 years of teaching look twice their age, already burned out from constant stress,

My sister is a teacher and she's always complaining about the lack of pay. I don't know why people enter the profession and choose to bitch about the salary. They're like a bunch of babies.

Another thing, I work in IT as a senior admin. If i'm crummy, I lose my job. If you're a bad engineer you lose your job. If you're a bad sales guy you lose your job. This doesn't seem to occur with teachers. Hence the reason they're an entitled bunch of whiners (no offense to the ones who teach out of passion).

Im a CPA that does occasionally does some individual returns. Some of those wealthy boyos have teachers for wives. I have never seen one of their w-2s below 80k.

good luck dealing with horrible kids.
that are increasing every year as most of their dumb parents these days expect school not only to teach them but feed them/provide supplies etc.


the two teachers that I know after 5 years of teaching look twice their age, already burned out from constant stress,

kids tell them whatever they want they can't say anything back.

parents than come in and double down.

One of my teacher friend's has been called every name in the book, had a chair thrown at her, etc and will gladly still teach those little fukkers.

my mom's a teacher, i'm largely anti-union and think they do a lot of whining but the sheer number of hours she has to put in prepping and writing up reports and doing BS govt/district required paperwork on her own time at home is absolutely fukin outrageous.. and we're talking pre-K kids here

it's effectively impossible to not bring that job home with you
