I make :
-$21/hour at a blue-collar factory job and work a ton of overtime, im on pace to make $80k+ this year
-part-time job as a server where I make around $10-15k a year
-I also own/manage 5 rental properties that bring in anywhere from $10 to $40k profit a year total.

So on average, between $105k-120k/year

Other than people getting lucky and landing great jobs, or being handed jobs from rich family members, or people living in super-high cost-of-living areas where 100k is average/below average.... 100k takes alot of work. dont let misc frauders fool ya

Your best bet at getting your foot in the door is to apply at a company in the middle of nowhere that is desperate for people, get experience and certs, and then jump ship into consulting. Also, pay attention to where people are going when they leave said place. Six figures may sound insane, but it isnโ€™t once you get experience and make the jump into the world of consulting. The key is getting certified in IT areas that are hot and in demand.

I do enterprise systems monitoring. meaning I monitor the global environment with applications I configure to page SMEs when there is a potential issue or critical issue.
good thing is, I don't fix chit, unless it within my own apps that I configure

I dropped school, picked up some old Cisco routers and switches, researched what types of cables I needed to make everything work and set up a mini home lab. Bought Todd Lamle's (sp?) CCNA book, downloaded CBT Nuggets CCNA videos and spent about a month following along with the labs in the book and videos, setting up my own scenarios, etc.

After 6-7 weeks I took a basic CCENT test and passed fairly easily, which is what a local company had as a minimum requirement to grant an interview. The job was helping firewall admins when they had issues and we dealt with check point, Palo Alto, F5, ASA and a few other ones.

This company paid for certifications while I was there and after I had 18 months of experience and some certs I landed my current job. I now work from home every day managing the network for a data center in Europe. In about 2 years I went from 32k -> 50k -> 94k now.

Here's my caveat though. I knew a guy from my first network job that moved onto that better job and he got me an interview.

Cliffs
Self study and get some entry certs
Apply at local places where your certa will be relevant
Bring it up during your interview that you have a desire to learn and that you self studied and spent your money to learn

That last part is what my previous hiring manager said got me the job.

Not 100k, but I live in Kansas City, KS so 94k is a lot different here than SoCal or NYC.
Reps for you bro, I love seeing a story like that - good ol' fashioned hard work.

My story is much the same - as I mentioned earlier, all the guys I work with have Masters or PhD, I have "just" a BS....and not even in Electrical Engineering!
I ended up where I am through crazy hard work, willingness to take on difficult tasks, consistency (people underestimate how important this is), not being / lazy / slacking, continually learning, seeking out new opportunities, being genuinely interested in the field, networking (when NOT job searching) etc.

This is why I love America so much - these days people want to tell you that it's not possible to "make it" unless you have the perfect connections, they want to tell you hard work isn't rewarded, they want to tell you that you MUST go into 100k+ student loan debt...it's all bull****.

If you are SMART and you WORK HARD you will be fine in the USA. There are 2 problems:

1) It's very painful for most people to admit / release they aren't as smart as they thought (or like to believe). So it has to be some other excuse, it's simply impossible they don't have the aptitude for these high-tech / high paying jobs. There is a reason why people from AROUND THE WORLD all want these jobs, you have to be BETTER than all the job-applicants, welcome to reality.

2) Most people aren't willing to work hard. It's not that they CAN'T work hard, it's they they CHOOSE not to work hard. They have other priorities, doesn't matter what they are (Family, traveling, dating 3 girls a week from Tinder, gym, Yoga class, whatever) most people, in general, and not willing to working consistently hard over YEARS. Most people are lazy slackers, they'll tell you they "work hard" but when you dig deeper, and ask them probing questions, it takes literally 45 seconds to realize they suck at their jobs, and they don't even care they suck.

Ordinarily both #1 and #2 wouldn't matter - the problem is these same people will then go on to complain how UNFIAR it all is. The reality is, people get paid what they are worth, the market is very efficient at determining what certain skill sets are worth, if you ARE getting underpaid, it's your responsibility to go out there and do the research, find out what the market rate for your job title / skills / experience in your area area, and apply to another job with that figure in mind. If you are unable to reach that figure....then I have bad news for you....you aren't as valuable as you think you are, and the companies know it.

People don't like to hear this I guess.....but I'm the type of "crazy" person who deals in direct reality, not fluffy feelings.

I agree with this, but I do take a slightly more nuanced position that there's a (3) - fortune/luck/timing, but I consider it almost irrelevant in constructive discussions on the topic, and weigh it much lower than skills/aptitude and hard work.

Denying that (3) exists doesn't serve arguments well, but we can weigh it extremely low and show how only (1) and (2) are within our control, and arguably doing enough of (1) and (2) will effectively eliminate the third factor.

I'm a senior sys admin. I have 4.5 years total experience. My first job was for the local cable company, rebooting cable boxes and modems. I started at $12, moved up to $13.50 six months later, worked for another year there, applied for a managerial position, someone else got it, so I started to look for another job. Found a Jr. sys admin position, that one paid $25, worked that, a year in I got promoted to regular sys admin for $33, then $37 six months later, and a year after I got promoted to senior sys admin, at $42, and then $50 six months later. I only have an A Plus cert.

The way I work is, I know a bit of everything, I can interface with clients, and design diagrams that look good and make sense to someone who knows nothing about IT.

No argument here, timing no doubt plays a factor.

As does always doing the best to make sure you are ready to take advantage of an opportunity if one arises.

I was perpetually underpaid as a dev for my first 8 years until I got the balls to actually go on many interviews and start shopping around for higher pay, which resulted in doubling my salary in only 4 years. I am now inching my way up to 200k with a combo of my job salary and some side IT work I do at night.

I switched jobs twice in last 4 years and also got two more offers while at current job, which I turned into a giant counter offer to stay. I also have another interview next week to keep myself fresh.

Companies are rarely just going to hand you money, you must gain leverage. Know that recruiting is expensive as ****, so if a place wants you dont be scared to ask for a lot. Losing adequate employees is also expensive as ****, because they have to recruit again and ramp up a new employee, thus you can play the counter offer move if you like your place.

Great time to be in development. Whether its programming, devops, or qa automation.

Go on some interviews and make **** happen. 50k is underpaid if youre actually coding anything.

If youre in helpdesk, learn powershell. That can be your ticket out. If you want to switch to networking, then go get the CCNA. Get it before Feb 2020 because they are changing it.

I was spec ops until I was demoted to chef on the USS Missouri. When I got out I had ptsd and started eating and drinking heavily which turned into an addiction to eating Toblerones and drinking whisky.

At one point my addiction was so bad I drove drunk and barefoot at 2am all the way from Vegas to L.A just to buy six Toblerones and gorge on them in a car park. I'll always remember that night as my lowest point before i decided to lose weight, stop drinking and get into IT.

I did my CCNA and I'm now in DevOps.

It's never too late, son.

Driving for Uber is an interesting โ€œniche IT segmentโ€.

Currently an IT Manager for a branch of a large multinational company. I dont get paid close to 100K but I think its because they pay me because of where Im living.

MFW cant transfer to US branch because I need work VISA and cant get VISA without job in US branch. Some BS like that. I'm teaching myself programming.

Right now I just handle the yearly budgeting/spending and service provider contracts etc and making sure those ****s I work with reboot users computers.

I make about $161k/year currently. This year I will hit about $200k due to a little bit of overtime. Plus about $45-50k in company stock. I work as a scientist in a biotechnology company in a very high cost of living area. My cost of living is about $30-35k/year though.

I have an interview for a more senior management position coming up this this week. Wish me luck, *******s.

Last 4 years I made 311, 296, 320 and 349 last year

The money is out there you homos you just have to look for it
Thats crazy money but you earn it with the high risk of fatality and insane amount of hours and being away from home.

I was in the oilfield for years and we had a few guys actually come to O&G because they said it was an easier lifestyle than lineman work which made me "wtf?" because oilfield is pure misery

Get one of those huge Acme magnets like from Tom and Jerry. Proceed to run the magnet all over the case, this will pull all of the stuck bytes and packets away from the PSU. You probably have a virus that caused a leak in your network, which clogged the PSU.
