China takes aim at the US for the first time in its defence white paper

Beijing acknowledges the rivalry with the US military, attacks its presence in the Asia-Pacific as destabilising and provocative, and clearly outlines China’s long-term aim to challenge US dominance

China’s official documents are renowned for being lengthy, lacking content, with repetitive rhetoric, orthodox ideology and ambiguous policy. This has largely been the case for China’s defence white papers, released once every two years since 1998. However, the 10th defence white paper, published on July 24, deserves attention, given that it contains significant updates and fresh ideas. The 51-page document, titled “China’s National Defence in the New Era”, is the first detailed response to a host of US defence policy statements.

Washington has thrown down the gauntlet to Beijing, with several key policy statements – its 2017 national security strategy, the 2018 national defence strategy and the 2019 report on Chinese military power – having effectively made China its primary strategic competitor. The new Chinese defence paper describes the United States military in Asia as destabilising, as the US recasts its security architecture in the Asia-Pacific and hews its strategic horizons to the Indo-Pacific concept.

For the first time, Beijing acknowledges the US strategic shift from the “war on terror” to its rivalry with China and Russia. It acknowledges the competition between the world’s sole superpower and the fast-rising one. The paper points out that the US is building and relocating its military assets in the Western Pacific, with multilateral naval exercises with Japan, Australia, India and European navies.

“The US has adjusted its national security and defence strategies. It has provoked and intensified competition among major countries,” the white paper states.

In a significant update on the 2010 white paper’s explanation of China’s defence spending, the latest document suggests that each of the three categories – personnel, training and maintenance, and equipment – accounts for roughly a third of total expenditure. It documents an unprecedented emphasis on maritime defence, with a call to “build a combined, multifunctional and efficient marine combat force structure”. It also emphasised China’s growing power projection capabilities and suggested a significant military strategy shift from “near seas defence” to “the combination of near seas defence and far seas protection”.

The “far seas” strategy is to help China become a maritime power. At the Communist Party’s 18th congress in 2012, the leadership took on board the ideas of American historian Alfred Thayer Mahan to declare China’s ambition to “build itself into a maritime power”. Since he came to power, President Xi Jinping, who is also commander-in-chief of the People’s Liberation Army, has spared no effort in speeding up the building of a world-class military with a focus on expanding its blue-water fleet.

From 2014-2018, Beijing launched naval vessels with a total weight of 678,000 tonnes, more than the French, German, Indian, Italian, South Korean, Spanish and Taiwanese navies combined, according to a report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. Last year, the Chinese navy overtook the US Navy to become the world’s largest, with more than 300 ships, compared with the 287 vessels comprising the deployable battle force of the US Navy. China will have at least six aircraft carrier battle groups by 2035, which might provide the first real challenge to the dominance of US carrier strike groups in the world.

The white paper repeats the rhetoric that China will never seek to become a hegemonic power, but also reflects an unabashed party-led effort to build a world-class military with formidable and advanced capabilities. It delivers the message that Beijing would brook no domestic or foreign challenge to its self-assigned historic mission. Obviously, Beijing’s short-term strategic objective is to become a pre-eminent power in the Asia-Pacific, and in the longer term, a global one, to challenge the decades-long US dominance. As the PLA works to transform itself into a world-class force by the mid-century, the US military may find itself facing a challenge unprecedented since the sinking of the imperial Japanese supercarrier Shinano in 1944.

China’s vast fleet is tipping the balance in the Pacific

The Chinese navy, which is growing faster than any other major fleet, now controls the seas off its coast. Once dominant, the United States and its allies sail warily in these waters. A former U.S. naval officer says China's advances have caught America napping.

A generation ago, from mid-1995 into early 1996, China lobbed missiles in the waters around Taiwan as the self-governing island prepared to hold its first fully democratic presidential election. Washington forcefully intervened to support its ally, sending two aircraft carrier battle groups to patrol nearby. The carriers, then as now the spearhead of American power, intimidated Beijing. The vote went ahead. The missiles stopped.

Today, with tension again running high, Washington still backs Taiwan. Chinese President Xi Jinping on January 2 renewed Beijing’s longstanding threat to use force if necessary to restore mainland control over the island. But the United States is now sending much more muted signals of support.

On Sunday, American ships sailed through the Taiwan Strait. This was the seventh passage of U.S. warships through the narrow, strategically sensitive waterway since July. Each time, though, just two U.S. vessels have ventured through; this week, it was a pair of destroyers. No powerful flotillas and certainly no aircraft carriers. It has been more than 11 years since an American carrier traversed the Taiwan Strait.

“The Trump administration faces a dilemma,” said Chang Ching, a retired Taiwan naval captain and researcher at the Taipei-based Society for Strategic Studies. “They want to send smart, calibrated signals to Beijing without causing an overreaction or misunderstanding.”

This caution is typical of the restraint the U.S. and allied navies, including Japan and Australia, now display in international waters near the Chinese coast, according to more than 10 current and former senior U.S. and Western military officials.

China now rules the waves in what it calls the San Hai, or “Three Seas”: the South China Sea, East China Sea and Yellow Sea. In these waters, the United States and its allies avoid provoking the Chinese navy.

In just over two decades, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the Chinese military, has mustered one of the mightiest navies in the world. This increased Chinese firepower at sea - complemented by a missile force that in some areas now outclasses America’s - has changed the game in the Pacific. The expanding naval force is central to President Xi Jinping’s bold bid to make China the preeminent military power in the region. In raw numbers, the PLA navy now has the world’s biggest fleet. It is also growing faster than any other major navy.

“We thought China would be a great pushover for way too long, and so we let them start the naval arms race while we dawdled,” said James Holmes, a professor at the U.S. Naval War College and a former U.S. Navy surface warfare officer.

China’s Ministry of National Defense, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and the Pentagon did not respond to questions from Reuters.

For the United States, the stakes are now much higher in any operation to support its regional allies, including Japan and Taiwan. America now faces daunting obstacles to any efforts to reinforce heavily outgunned Taiwan in a crisis. Beijing regards Taiwan as a renegade province and is currently building an amphibious force that could give it the capacity to launch an invasion of the island.

Senior Asian defense and security officials say the PLA’s naval advances have introduced a new uncertainty in such scenarios: If Beijing can sow serious doubt about whether Washington will intervene against China, it would undermine the value of U.S. security guarantees in Asia.

In November, a bipartisan commission set up by Congress to review the Trump administration’s national defense strategyreported that in a war with China over Taiwan,“Americans could face a decisive military defeat.”

As China gains confidence that it can dominate its near seas, it intends to challenge the dominance of the U.S. Navy in distant waters, too, in the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean, according to U.S and Chinese military officials.

Satellite imagery of Chinese dockyards, reports in China’s state-controlled media and assessments of U.S. and other foreign naval experts show the PLA navy is expanding as fast as shipyards can weld hulls together. This emerging blue water fleet was just a dream for the early commanders of the communist navy born in 1949, during the closing stages of the nation’s civil war. Then, the People’s Liberation Army assembled a motley collection of conscripted fishing boats and vessels defecting from the Nationalists.

Since 2014, China has launched more warships, submarines, support ships and major amphibious vessels than the entire number of ships now serving in the United Kingdom’s fleet, according to an analysis from the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies published in May last year.Between 2015 and 2017, China launched almost 400,000 tonnes of naval vessels, about twice the output of U.S. shipyards in that period, the IISS said.

The PLA navy now has about 400 warships and submarines, according to U.S. and other Western naval analysts. By 2030, the Chinese navy could have more than 530 warships and submarines, according to a projection in a 2016 U.S. Naval War College study.

A shrunken and overworked U.S. Navy, which has ruled the oceans virtually unchallenged since the end of the Cold War, had 288 warships and submarines at the end of March, according to the Pentagon.

The H-20 and JH-XX: China's Two (Yes, Two) New Stealth Bombers

In January 2018, two sentences in an annual report by the DIA on Chinese military power sent a minor shockwave rippling across the defense-related internet:

“The PLAAF is developing new medium- and long-range stealth bombers to strike regional and global targets. Stealth technology continues to play a key role in the development of these new bombers, which probably will reach initial operational capability no sooner than 2025.”

In the last few years, China’s development of what appears to be a subsonic long-range heavy strategic bomber called the H-20 has become increasingly evident—especially in 2018, when the Chinese government began teasing a public unveiling to take place in 2019. The flying wing bomber, which apparently resembles the U.S. B-2 Spirit in form and function, is to be produced by Xi’an Aircraft Corporation, which already manufactures older H-6 strategic bombers and the chubby Y-20 transport plane.

However, the stealth “tactical” or “medium” bomber was news—sort of. The fighter-bomber in question is believed to refer to the JH-XX, a rival stealth bomber concept proposed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation believed to have been passed over in favor of the longer-range H-20. Shenyang is better known for producing fighters, including Chinese derivatives of the Russian Flanker jet and a J-31 stealth fighter which may be exported or serve on Chinese aircraft carriers.

The first image of this JH-XX concept was leaked at a convention in 2013. Then in May 2018, the prestigious Chinese magazine Aviation Knowledge flashed concept art on its cover of a futuristic-looking stealth jet measuring roughly thirty meters in length, with two huge turbofan engines atop the rear fuselage, canted tail-stabilizers near identical to Northrop’s YF-23 Black Widow stealth prototype, a big bomb bay in the belly and side weapon-bays for carrying long-range air-to-air missiles. This image has since inspired model kits and online fan-art. (One should bear in mind that speculative artwork of the “F-19 stealth fighter” in the 1980s ended up bearing little resemblance to the actual F-117 stealth jet.)

It’s not clear why the DIA believes the JH-XX is actively under development. Rick Joe of The Diplomat, who has written arguably the most detailed English-language profile of the JH-XX prior to the DIA report, expressed his skepticism in a series of tweets:

“Regarding the DIA report ‘confirming’ a PLA stealthy medium bomber; the info hasn’t changed since last year when I wrote this piece: ‘To the best of our knowledge the JH-XX does not seem to be actively pursued…’”

“Now, maybe the DIA report was based on classified intel the public is not privy to, but from the quality of the rest of the report I doubt it,” he said in a separate tweet. “Chances are they relied on some open source/public articles about JH-XX and interpreted them a bit over zealously.”

Thus, it may be prudent to wait for further evidence to emerge before taking the JH-XX’s active development as a given.

Why would PLA even order two types of stealth bombers? Effectively, the JH-XX would represent a different set of design compromises. The H-20 trades speed in exchange for greater payload, range and stealth. The ‘game plan’ is for such a bomber is to penetrate enemy airspace without being detected at all, as it doesn’t have the agility to evade enemy fighters or missiles. It’s projected range of five thousand miles would allow it strike targets across the Pacific, especially if combined with aerial refueling and long-range missiles.

The JH-XX would likely have shorter range (900-1500 miles) and a smaller payload than the H-20, but would be much faster at speeds up to twice the speed of sound. (Note, however, that friction generate at Mach 2 may erode the expensive coatings of radar-absorbent materials on stealth aircraft.) Thus, while an JH-XX might eventually be detected as it sprints towards its target, the combination of speed and reduced detection range would theoretically give interceptors and air defenses too little time to react.

Overall, the H-20’s long range and heavier payload is more useful to the PLA. However, the JH-XX would bring a different mix of capabilities and might be better for penetrating certain very dense air-defense networks where evading detection may not be possible even for a stealthy H-20.

China borrowed a lot from the future to build their military up. When this global debt bomb goes off I'm wondering who will rein supreme when the global financial system is restructured. China and Russia have been purchasing tons of gold to create a gold backed currency, and China is also trying to establish a benchmark to have oil being traded with Yuan only.

I read an article by the Economist last week saying the world is not going to be unipolar much longer, but multipolar. Europe wants to pivot to doing their trading with China, and move away from the U.S. China will be the hegemon of the Eurasian continent, and are building up their trade and military to consolidate power over the region.

China Carrier Ops - the implied intent is to gain working knowledge and build upon that before entering FRP for their carriers. There is a lot of Chinese national pride going into this, founded on a couple generations of brainwashing. I wouldn't underestimate their intent or capabilities or ability to leverage its industrial base anymore:

A couple rumored hypersonics platforms - I know publicly it's been rumored the Chinese and Russians are ahead of us in hypersonics, but keep in mind we have been testing hypersonic platforms since the 1960s, with rumored major breakthroughs in the 90s & 00s. I believe the US is safe for the time being in that realm.

Philippine military warns on Chinese investment in key islands

The Philippine military on Tuesday warned plans by President Rodrigo Duterte's government to allow Chinese investors to develop three tiny but strategic islands could "compromise" Manila's security.

Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said Duterte was aware of proposals for Grande and Chiquita islands at the mouth of the former US naval base at Subic Bay as well as the isolated northern island of Fuga, but would not elaborate.

US forces vacated Subic and other Philippine bases in 1992 and it is now a home port for the Philippine Navy.

Military spokesman Brigadier-General Edgard Arevalo said Tuesday the government should study the security implications of handing over the islands to foreign entities.

"There's no doubt that these island features has or have strategic security impacts on us if these were to fall into the hands of other people. They have a strategic importance for our defence," Arevalo told reporters.

"While we approve of our economy getting a boost... we should also consider the security aspect that may be compromised if we fail to adequately study the implications of leasing these to foreigners," Arevalo added.

Duterte has overseen improved economic ties with China since being elected president in mid-2016, when he set aside a sovereignty dispute over islands and waters in the South China Sea that Beijing claims almost in its entirety.

This has led to a robust influx of Chinese investment in the Philippines, particularly in offshore gaming firms catering to China that have drawn several thousand Chinese workers to Manila.

Apart from the islands, Arevalo said the military was "definitely alarmed" at the rise in the number of Chinese workers in the country, including "reports that tourists are taking pictures of our naval installations".

"We need to determine what is the real purpose of their presence here," the military official added.

Panelo, the president's spokesman, stressed Tuesday the island investments were "mere plans" at this time, adding it was the job of the military and defence establishments "to see if there is any security concern on any issue".

China’s navy ‘set to pick J-20 stealth jets for its next generation carriers’[ul]
  • Military insiders say the aircraft appears to have beaten the FC-31 in the race to become the PLA Navy’s fighter of the future

  • A military source close said it would be almost impossible to develop both aircraft over the next few years given the risk of an economic downturn

  • [ul]
China’s military is likely to pick the country’s first active stealth fighter, the J-20, for its next generation aircraft carriers, according to military sources and a recent report on state media.

The J-20, made by the Chengdu Aerospace Corporation (CAC), appears to have a won a head-to-head contest with the FC-31, a fighter made by another company which is still undergoing testing.

A military insider told the South China Morning Post that the Central Military Commission, the People’s Liberation Army’s top decision-making body, now favoured adapting the J-20 for its new carriers.

“The Chengdu Aerospace Corporation will announce some new products, which will include a new version of their J-20. You can guess what type it will be,” the military insider, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject, said.

    [...]

But another military source close to the PLA Navy said it would be almost impossible to develop both aircraft over the next few years given the risk of an economic downturn as the trade war with the US continues to escalate.

Sorry, I'm not at all impressed. China's military looks amazing on paper and their military equipment looks pretty but the military hasn't been "tested" since the 1979 border war with Vietnam where the Chinese army were thrashed. It reminds me of how people were freaked out about the enormous size of the Soviet war machine yet they got their assess handed to them in Afghanistan.

All that tech that they've stolen (were sold) from the US is coming to fruition. No shocker their stealth planes designs etc look very similar to the F22 etc, I have no doubt they were given access to that tech by administrations past that sold our country out.

We are most definitely already in the Cold War 2.0, and the main battle filed will be cyberspace. I feel lik China will strike electronically first, then attempt to destroy targets during the resulting confusion. No secret that theyve been developing their satellite destroying technology for a while now. Not to mention the islands in the South China Sea they're building.

These posts are great and very informative, I appreciate the effort OP and I read them all!

Im worried about their cyber capabilities. They have infiltrated damn near every leading research lab, corporation, and military section of the US over the last 25 years. They have been siphoning secrets like a vacuum and are extremely motivated to make use of them.

China’s Type 075 helicopter ship nears completion, amateur pictures show

World’s third largest helicopter assault ship could be launched in a few months, military expert says

Pictures taken by military enthusiasts earlier this week appear to show that construction of China’s first Type 075 amphibious helicopter assault ship is moving quickly.

The images, taken outside the dry dock at Shanghai’s Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard, were circulated on Chinese social media and showed scaffolding around two separate superstructures above the flight deck, suggesting the estimated 40,000 tonne ship may have two islands.

In June, commercial satellite images showed the vessel had a 32-metre wide beam, with bow and stern sections yet to be added. In the most recent pictures the bow of the vessel is clearly visible.

The status of the construction suggested the ship would probably be launched in the next few months, according to Song Zhongping, a Hong Kong-based military affairs commentator.

Song said large landing helicopter docks (LHDs) like the Type 075 could play an even more important role than aircraft carriers in the future, following last month’s defence white paper released in Beijing which named protecting China’s overseas interests as one of the key missions of its military forces.

That's the common sentiment, but eventually all that money spent educating their students, breeding a whole new generation of Engineers, coupled with the technical knowledge they have thanks to the tech transfers and theft, they'll be able to have a good foundation going into the future. China to show off advanced nuclear weapons in National Day parade and ‘send message to US about capabilities’[ul]
  • Military sources say the October 1 event in Beijing is intended to highlight its enhanced deterrent capabilities and show off advances of recent years

  • One analyst said the show of strength would be a ‘warning message’ to Washington in light of continuing tensions

  • [ul]
China is planning to make its strategic nuclear missiles and advanced fighter jets the centrepiece of its National Day military parade in what military sources and analysts said was an attempt to show off its achievements in overhauling its armed forces over the past few years.

Military analysts said the show of nuclear strength was intended to demonstrate China’s enhanced deterrence and second strike capability, especially to the United States.

“The parade is to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1,” one military insider said.

“So it should let the whole world see China’s achievement of military modernisation under the leadership of President Xi Jinping since he came to power [in 2012].”

The military insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that weapon systems such as DF-41 intercontinental ballistic missiles and J-2 submarine-launched ballistic missiles have already been moved to Beijing. A squadron of J-20 jets, the country’s first stealth fighter, is also preparing for the event.

The DF-41 is capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads and its range of at least 12,000km (7,460 miles) means it can hit any target on the US mainland.

The JL-2, which has a shorter range of 7,000km (4,350 miles), is also able to hit parts of the American continent when launched from the sea.

Neither weapon was featured in the country’s biggest-ever military parade, which was held in 2017 at the Zhurihe base in Inner Mongolia to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army – though other advanced weapons were displayed.

Photographs published online suggest that reinforcement work is already underway at subway stations under Changan Avenue and Tiananmen Square in the heart of Beijing.

This work along the likely route of the parade suggests that it will feature launch vehicles capable of carrying DF-41s and other heavy weapons systems.

Hong Kong-based military analyst Song Zhongping said it was likely that Beijing would want to use the parade to send a “warning message” to the US in light of the continuing tensions between the two countries.

“China has invested a lot of resources into military science and technology development in a bid to enhance its nuclear deterrence capability over the past years, which Beijing believes represents a strategic measure in countering the global military hegemony [of the US],” Song, who is now a military commentator for Phoenix Television in Hong Kong, said.

He noted that the US has started making new low-yield warheads for its Trident missiles which “lowered the threshold on the use of tactical nuclear weapons”.

“It may even use nuclear weapons in future battles and that [has given legitimacy] for other countries to develop countermeasures,” Song added.

Which I find the notion that chances China would be trying to provoke any war rather slim. China is at a massive geographic disadvantage in terms of war. This is why even though being an economic powerhouse and at times a military powerhouse in the past, they have historically been unable to expand outside of their current borders. Most of their fuel and food is imported. You could see that's why the SCS is rather important to them, to control shipping lanes. (even though in an actual war in the SCS is completely undefendable and would be completely destroyed within the hour) There really is no war scenario where they would come out unscathed and the Communist Party's rule secure. I think China becomes rather predictable when you treat their #1 self-interest as preserving the Communist Party's power and rule in the country.

If China loses any war, the Communist party would be overthrown and it would be replaced with an ultra-nationalistic government. Or even if they are not overthrown, the leadership would be replaced with an ultra-nationalist faciton. The Communist party is actually quite active in restraining nationalism, because hyper-nationalism actually undermines CPC rule.

Report on China Naval Modernization and Implications for the U.S. Navy

In an international security environment characterized as one of renewed great power competition, China’s military modernization effort, including its naval modernization effort, has become thetop focus of U.S. defense planning and budgeting. China’s navy, which China has been steadily modernizingf or roughly 25 years, since the early to mid-1990s, has become a formidable military force within China’s near-seas region, and it is conducting a growing number of operations in more-distant waters, including the broader waters of the Western Pacific, the Indian Ocean, and waters around Europe. China’s navy is viewed as posing amajor challenge to the U.S. Navy’s ability to achieve and maintain wartime control of blue-water ocean areas in the Western Pacific—the first such challenge the U.S. Navy has faced since the end of the Cold War—and forms a key element of a Chinese challenge to the long-standing status of the United States as the leading military power in the Western Pacific.

China’s naval modernization effort encompasses a widearray of platform and weapon acquisition programs, including anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs), anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs), submarines, surface ships, aircraft, unmanned vehicles (UVs),and supporting C4ISR (command and control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) systems. China’s naval modernization effort also includes improvements in maintenance and logistics, doctrine, personnel quality, education and training, and exercises.

China’s military modernization effort, including its naval modernization effort is assessed as being aimed at developing capabilities for addressing the situation with Taiwan militarily, if need be; for achieving a greater degree of control or domination over China’s near-seas region, particularly the South China Sea; for enforcing China’s view that it has the right to regulate foreign military activities in its 200-mile maritime exclusive economic zone (EEZ); for defending China’s commercial sea lines of communication (SLOCs), particularly those linking China to the Persian Gulf; for displacing U.S. influence in the Western Pacific; and for asserting China’s status as the leading regional power and a major world power.

Consistent with these goals, observers believe China wants its navy to be capable of acting as part of a Chinese anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) force—a force that can deter U.S. intervention in a conflict in China’s near-seas region over Taiwan or some other issue, or failing that, delay the arrival or reduce the effectiveness of intervening U.S. forces. Additional missions for China’s navy include conducting maritime security (including antipiracy) operations, evacuating Chinese nationals from foreign countries when necessary, and conducting humanitarian assistance/disaster response (HA/DR) operations.

The U.S. Navy in recent years has taken a number of actions to counter China’s naval modernization effort. Among other things, the U.S. Navy has shifted a greater percentage of its fleet to the Pacific; assigned its most-capable new ships and aircraft and its best personnel to the Pacific; maintained or increased general presence operations, training and developmental exercises, and engagement and cooperation with allied and othernavies in the Pacific; increased the planned future size of the Navy; initiated, increased, or accelerated numerous programs for developing new military technologies and acquiring new ships, aircraft, unmanned vehicles, and weapons; begun development of new operational concepts (i.e., new ways to employ Navy and Marine Corps forces) for countering Chinese maritime A2/AD forces, and signaled that the Navy in coming years will shift to a more-distributed fleet architecture that will feature a smaller portion of larger ships, a larger portion of smaller ships, and a substantially greater use of unmanned vehicles. The issue for Congress is whether the U.S. Navy is responding appropriately to China’s naval modernization effort.

Will probably post more articles as we get closer to China's Military Parade next month -
China Appears Set To Unveil Very High-Speed Drone During Big Military Parade In Beijing

The 70th anniversary of the founding of communist China will be marked by a huge military parade that will pass through Beijing's Tiananmen Square on October 1st. In preparation for this massive event, parade rehearsals are underway under extremely tight security. These rehearsals have included a number of previously unrevealed weapon systems. The one that has caught our eye the most is a wedge-shaped aircraft that appears to be a very high-speed drone.

Although we have to note that this is speculative and based on the limited information available, the shape of this does not appear to be new. Satellite images have been floating around showing a similar platform for a number of years, with the best image emerging last year from the PLAAF airbase near Malan in Xinjiang province. The image shows a number of drones laid out on a ramp area. All are known aside from the wedge-shaped one. UASvision.com, which did a writeup on the image when it first surfaced, estimated its dimensions as 40 feet long by roughly 18 feet wide.

The rumor of the potential existence of a number of increasingly complex, high-supersonic, or even hypersonic developmental Chinese drones goes back the better part of a decade.Eastpendulum.com has kept a close eye on developments in this shadowy space and has uncovered a number of patents that match the planform in question. A number of flight tests likely supports the existence of this craft, and possibly its developmental progenitors, which would be just one of multiple extremely high-speed weapons capabilities China is developing. It's thought that the craft is launched from an H-6 bomber, or at least was for testing.

How successful this system was or what state it currently is in operationally speaking is unknown, but the fact that China may be about to parade it around is indicative of it at least approaching an operational state. As far as what it does, it isn't clear. It could be a survivable reconnaissance drone that can rapidly collect regional intelligence without being tied to the predictable orbits of satellites. In fact, it would be even more useful if those satellites were outright destroyed or disabled during a conflict, which is an increasingly real possibility. On the other hand, it could be a high-supersonic or even hypersonic cruise missile, or even a strike asset that can be reused, or both. It just isn't clear at this time.

China's high-end unmanned combat air vehicle ambitions are something we have been following very closely in recent years. This is not the only indication of a Chinese unmanned system that is capable of greater than subsonic speeds. In June of 2018, The War Zone reported on China's supersonic fighter-like drone program. So, the country clearly has a multi-layered advanced unmanned aircraft development strategy, with the very high-speed drone that is being wheeled around Beijing likely sitting at the top of that organization chart performance-wise. Even if this craft is part of a larger, ongoing, evolutionary research and development initiative, it's still a significant development.

Some will comment that the aircraft in question looks like a Lockheed D-21 drone. That is somewhat true and it is also a fact that China was able to recover the wreckage of the last operational D-21 flight that was lost over the country nearly five decades ago. Whatever information they could glean from that wreckage likely influenced not just this aircraft's design, but pretty much all of the country's indigenous high-performance aircraft programs that came after it. So it is unlikely to be any sort of a copy, although the D-21's influence may be present.

The high-speed drone is not the only surprise in store for the parade on October 1st. A subsonic unmanned combat air vehicle will be displayed as will be an unmanned underwater vehicle. This is in addition to other new weapons, like multiple-launch rocket systems and missile systems.

Here's the bottom line - China wouldn't attack western country. Most of Xi's/Chinese CCP officials have MASSIVE assets in the west.

This is a family tree of Xi, here's the translation

Xi's two older sisters and their husbands all have Austrilian and Canadian citizenship. His brother has Australian citizenship. His ex-wife is now living in UK.

His daughter has studied in Harvard. LMAO.

CCP likes to showcase their army to boost up the insane nationalism of being "Chinese" to their citizens and how China is a great country that fears no western countries.

If a war somehow breaks out, CCP officials will be the first one to run to USA/Canada/Australia/UK and hide. They are not patriot but control freaks.

Good point you bring up with Xi, the wealth of his family is probably one of the most censored topics in China, they even retaliate against the West for reporting on it.

I don't think they'd necessarily attack a Western country either because there is too much at stake between both of the parties, even with the Taiwan issue. But you have to consider China has been working extensively on denying America every strategic advantage it has within China's immediate sphere of influence and right now that's the South China Sea. Non-kinetic means of disabling satellites, ever-increasing naval forces and subsurface detection systems, an insane IADs, a whole branch of the military dedicated to missile systems, they want to be able to operate with impunity within that region, to the point where it would be suicide for the United States to launch any operations in the area. This itself has been publicly evident for some time.

It's the job of the US Military to continue to challenge China as much as it can to help deter China's assertive behavior. Increased ISR flights along its borders, increased FONOPs, IRBM-Hypersonic deployments & Fixed DEW to Western Pacific Bases, basing Long Range Strike /B-21 & the future PCA family/ & Support /KC-46/ further out from the 1st island chain, EW support, etc. The DOD is taking a very sober approach to looking at how the armed forces are currently structured and analyzing what they need to do to counter China effectively, no more dog and pony show. There's going to be a big emphasis on Stand Off weapons and Drone Support.

The Wild Card is Africa. China is currently trying to promote arms dealing in Africa, and through the China Africa Defense and Security Forum, they aspire to formulate a defense force in Africa similar to NATO. If China can get a strong strategic foothold in Africa, that'll only add to the mess. Of course, this will take another 10-20 years to really manifest into anything tangible because Africa, at the moment, can't even pay back the infrastructure projects China is contracting with them. Which.. all of this makes me believe China is going to try to establish a breakaway currency in the future to power its hegemonic goals.
