The court mandated support system is antiquated as phuk. It's designed for the 'average' earner with the %-of-income based payment system. In the overwhelming majority of cases it 'kinda' works, but outliers with large earnings get absolutely destroyed by being forced to pay relative to their income.

There isn't a child on Earth that needs nearly $400k a year to be raised properly. And, no, the child is not entitled to the same lifestyle that the person paying the support, lives. If the parent paying support wishes to give them that lifestyle, fine, but being mandated by law is complete bull$hit.

Too many people are paying out the ass and end up in bankruptcy because those kinds of earnings don't often last and the court system moves painfully slow when adjusting to lower levels of income. Sometimes it can take years. And when a parent goes from earning millions to thousands they can (and do) end up being in child-support-debt for life. There isn't a single valid argument to be made for that nonsense.

I think marriage is important to the fabric of our society and necessary for raising well-adjusted children. Though I think that it's important that I make it clear that my definition of marriage is not necessarily traditional. A mother and father exclusively committed to each other is enough.
