I don't have any employees/boss and try to never have to take on customers (so far so good!). In other words nobody to answer to.
I've had a few for years but the ones thats truly hit it hard a did super well were related to Rideshare. (Uber/Lyft etc). Lyft used to have an Ambassador program where they'd pay you for each new passenger your referred ($5/ea or $10/ea depending on the city they were trying to push) and i did it by the hundreds. They paid me over $100k alone in one year. driver referrals too but they were miniscule in my situation compared to new rider referrals. (you offer them legit free credit to sign up, you get paid real $ week to week). but my main earner was through google adsense and that was due to traffic and well placed ads for each device (mobile/tablet/desktop).
But i'm back to making peanuts. While it may seem great to 'work for yourself' it's also an emotional rollercoaster at times because you can get lazy, or theoretically do all the work but make none of the 'paycheck', and you have to pay your own health etc and all that fun stuff.
i'm working on new things that are entirely unrelated to rideshare. in fact Google also fuqqd me with their API access pricing for certain API's they offer (literally increased the prices from like $200/mo to over $10k/mo if i were to stay with them. srs.). So i'm working now on ideas/projects that are entirely not reliant on any third party API's. learned my lesson.

That in itself made the biggest difference, being the first to do it. I do recall promoting my Lyft site a little from my Uber site down the road, but that was short lived once i realized how they would quickly fukk me if they saw me promoting competition. I just wanted the backlinks tbh since my Uber site was first and got a lot more traffic (Uber is just a bigger company too..international etc). but yaInteresting. Dont go into details, im not really trying to learn your method or anything. But im curious if you had an already made website and just drove traffic to the lyft stuff or you thought of new ways? Like i said, dont really need details
I expanded the websites after i saw traction but the vast majority only came for the one thing which was the homepage. With a year or two as traffic rose, so did competition who literally copy you word for word almost and steal from your javascript at times for UX/functionality. Really rustled my jimmies. Some of these guys know nothing about INFOSEC/PERSEC and i found one top competitor (who never took my place but got close and still rustled me he has no ability to create his own ideas and chit apparently). He's some Danish guy living in Thailand as an expat. But unfortunately both companies, many years later, essentially shut us all down. Because it saved them $ and they have the legal teams to do so. We were fine. legally speaking but i'm not going to hire a legal team to go up against many multi-billion dollar companies. they knew that.
I'm just thankful for the years it provided me of the feeling of actual success, but yeah once both companies went Publicly Traded apparently they decided to really fuk over any remote competition (even if it was helping them out/catering to specific needs while still promoting their companies in the first place).
SEO is what really did it for me. So basic recognition/social media + Well optimized (fast loading, works well and looks good in all browsers/devices, and most importantly i think -- being the first) is what did it for me.
