This thread has gone completely off the rails and turned into a total sh!tshow. I can't tell if people are trolling or actually believe what they're saying. What I find amazing is that when I first posted here I posted that Vox wasin the wrongsaying bbcom was a cult, but the more and more garbage posts I see here, the more I'm starting to see what they're talking about.

No one seems to want to engage in legitimate debate, they just want to b!tch, cry and moan and liberals, leftists, blah blah blah. I try and rebut people with well written and thought out arguments and I get nothing back. So, if this dumpster fire continues, I'm just going to close this thread.


However, if you want to make a legitimate, sound argument, then do so with proper methods as outlined in the post here. All I'm seeing is cognitive bias, logical fallacies, conspiracy theories (George Soros owns Netflix? Give me a f*cking break).

I'm also going to post the text from Carl Sagan's "Baloney Detection Kit" from his bookThe Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Darkwhich isrequiredreading, IMO.
  • Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the “facts.”
  • Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.
  • Arguments from authority carry little weight — “authorities” have made mistakes in the past. They will do so again in the future. Perhaps a better way to say it is that in science there are no authorities; at most, there are experts.
  • Spin more than one hypothesis. If there’s something to be explained, think of all the different ways in which it could be explained. Then think of tests by which you might systematically disprove each of the alternatives. What survives, the hypothesis that resists disproof in this Darwinian selection among “multiple working hypotheses,” has a much better chance of being the right answer than if you had simply run with the first idea that caught your fancy.
  • Try not to get overly attached to a hypothesis just because it’s yours. It’s only a way station in the pursuit of knowledge. Ask yourself why you like the idea. Compare it fairly with the alternatives. See if you can find reasons for rejecting it. If you don’t, others will.
  • Quantify. If whatever it is you’re explaining has some measure, some numerical quantity attached to it, you’ll be much better able to discriminate among competing hypotheses. What is vague and qualitative is open to many explanations. Of course there are truths to be sought in the many qualitative issues we are obliged to confront, but finding them is more challenging.
  • If there’s a chain of argument, every link in the chain must work (including the premise) — not just most of them.
  • Occam’s Razor. This convenient rule-of-thumb urges us when faced with two hypotheses that explain the data equally well to choose the simpler.
  • Always ask whether the hypothesis can be, at least in principle, falsified. Propositions that are untestable, unfalsifiable are not worth much. Consider the grand idea that our Universe and everything in it is just an elementary particle — an electron, say — in a much bigger Cosmos. But if we can never acquire information from outside our Universe, is not the idea incapable of disproof? You must be able to check assertions out. Inveterate skeptics must be given the chance to follow your reasoning, to duplicate your experiments and see if they get the same result.

    You are right that it resembles a cult. It IS an echo chamber. This is happening all over the internet though. It isn't just misc. All popular internet sites are fragmenting into polarized viewpoints. It's the nature of a system where the aggregate silences dissent and self selects for positive reinforcement.

    Brah no offense but it's clear you don't post often here. I'm amazed that you're surprised at the outcome of this thread. You closing the thread just shuts down any conversation that might happen and tbh you should keep it open to expose the real nutjobs. I do think most miscers are good people but there are more than just a few who are absolutely insane, and like I mentioned before it's fuking nuts that some mods act like they're children who will grow out of it. They're not.

    A good first step to cleaning up this place would be replacing the user titles with preferred pronouns.

    I'm glad they removed height and weight to prevent body shaming, but there are so many problematic aspects to this forum that I just can't even, I mean yikes it's not 2008 anymore

    And the funny thing is that misc is actually more open to allowing dissenting opinions IME.

    Yes, the R&P section is dominated by Trump supporters ATM, but it isn't 100%.

    If you visit some extreme political sites there isn't even a pretense of discussion. Any opinion that doesn't match the group isn't argued against so much as drowned out.

    Bro, look at my join date. I've been on the misc since you were playing Nintendo 64 and drinking Fruitopia. I've seen the misc forum get hacked, I've seen 4chan raids, I've seen floods of kiddie porn. I ran the misc IRC chat room for like 5 years. There's nothing here that shocks me anymore.

    But all I see now is just a sea of stupidity and/or possibly trolling. I don't even know what we're arguing about anymore.

    Idk, I guess I just expected more from the misc Iusedto know and inhabit. Maybe it's because I'm not an admin anymore and I can't give out unlimited reps that no one really cares what I have to say.

    When I was admin and could give out unlimited reps I raised $25k for the Japense tsunami of 2011 by letting everyone donate $10 to the Red Cross and I repped every single person who donated. It seemed much more cohesive back then.

    Maybe it's just a sign of the times and the political discourse in this country has devolved into nothing but sh!t slinging anyone with anyone with a different opinion than yours. Or maybe the misc has finally turned into the absolute trash bin that it's been growing into for years.

    who cares to be honest, a serial killer could post here it doesn't mean that's what bodybuilding or the misc represent. People are free to make any account on any websites with fake emails , names or even there real identity. They have the freedom to do that, it doesn't mean that is what the board represents. Also the label that incels are cults or killers or is not true. People can be normal incels just how it is. Most men are not incels, just cowards who have not found there way in life yet. incel means involuntariy celibacy, so something wrong with there penis, mental illness/ mentally handicap.

    The majority of guys are voluntary celibate they choose not to try. I know we like to meme and have a laugh saying the misc is a bunch of incels but it's not true. They are just cowards with no path/purpose or courage.
    I just want to share the knowledge I have obtained throughout my life and hopefully change someone's life.
