Hypertrophy, gaining muscle by progressing loads on efficient exercises isn't only training for size you mashed potato.

I mean, i agree there's other ways to grow shoulders that are probably superior if the goal is strictly delt growth, but i'm not sure there's many more economical ways to grow your entire upper body, so even for hypertrophy i don't think it's worth trashing if general upper body growth is your goal, but if we're talking strictly delts then yeah a compound exercise that isn't even meant to target delts specifically probably isn't optimal.

Each to their own, but i think i'd disagree with the thread title that people 'waste their time' doing OHP, and honestly it's not the kind of rhetoric i'd expect from you, OP. You usually seem very open minded to the fact there's many different ways to train depending on goals, but in this thread your posts come across as a little douchy and arrogant, especially the statement:

"Literally one of the most overrated exercises in the gym to be completely honest. Smart people will back me up on that. Typically gym bros will lose their **** over the statement lol"

Always hate it when someone basically frames a debate as 'if you disagree with me, you're not an idiot'

If you had said something like, "mind = blown that people think OHP is optimal for shoulder growth" this topic would be very different, but you're literally saying it's a 'waste of time' with no context, and framing the debate in such a way that anybody who disagrees with you is 'stupid'... honestly i'm slightly disappointed as i had a fairly high opinion of you as the misc goes

Did you read OP man?? That's literally what I said in the first paragraph. People getting a bit too emotional about a click bait title on the misc to be honest. No exercise is a waste of time if you enjoy it.

I know what a standing strict OHP is. It's still inferior to seated in terms of muscle development. You're still going to have decreased output standing vs seated. And no, I've never touched a drug in my life. Stay mad *******

you're wrong about this just like you were wrong about not squatting. you made no mention of high bar ass to ankle squatting. you over generalize movements and their payoffs. nobody wanna tell you that bc ur strong aesthetic.

I wasn't wrong about that either. Are your quads the first thing to fail in any kind of back squat? No

Never said squats won't build quads, said they aren't the most optimal.

Arn would probably back me up on both these points

Depends what you're training for lol. Training for strength then do it, bodybuilding? literally no point better to do light db work, olympic lifting? might as well just do your cleans & jerks or snatches etc.

Why would you do deadlift if you're bodybuilding your focus should be hypertrophy? or why would you do clean and press if you're powerlifting? just do whatever is best for the sport you're training.

OHP usefulness chart
Powerlifting - Not useful atall
Strongman - Extremely useful
Weightlifting - Useful slightly but probably better to do other technique based overhead stuff
Bodybuilding - Better alternatives for shoulder development
Crossfit - probably worth it a little but not really, similar to weightlifting
General Strength - Likely better to do OHP standing and engage the full body than just isolating delts in db press/seated press if your goal is just general fitness/strength

I don't disagree with any of that. But is it so fukin wrong to discuss optimal exercise selection???

I never said "everyone should be doing this exact exercise". I said there are better options for shoulder development than a standing press

Maybe I missed the srs tag in my title???? Oh wait, there isn't one

You've definitely thrown miscers for a loop, if you came at it from a more specific angle such as

"shoulder exercises that maximize hypertrophy"

this thread wouldn't be 6 pages. The same could be said for your quad argument, squats don't maximize hypertrophy into the quads for the amount of work being done. Hard to argue that point.

Not sure why people are saying OHP is useless for powerlifting. It developes great lock out power, assuming you actually press to lockout and aren't 1/2 repping. It's my favorite movement for strengthing my bench lock out next to board pressing.

Obviously for bodybuilding purposes, there are much better alternatives.

If I made that the title, 3 people would have clicked it and it wouldn't have been nearly as entertaining for me
