There were some cops here defending the hallway shooting in Las Vegas.

I'm usually pro cop in these types of circumstances because I work with a lot of them and most are good people, at least the ones over 40. Mark my words when this new batch of recruits become senior officers chit is going to get wild. I know what is acceptable tactics and what isn't. This situation got out of hand and there are gonna be some consequences. Sadly the people screwed the hardest in the aftermath are gonna be the tax payers

To me, this is the issue that the investigation will probably center around. Once there perp started to shoot, the cops had to return fire. They have to try and preserve their own lives, along with people around. Letting someone shoot at will isn't the best way to do that.

Assuming they knew there was a hostage, approaching the vehicle in a spot full of innocent bystanders, where the criminal was basically cornered was not a good move. If the bullets from the innocent bodies end up being from police guns, there will be ALOT of lawsuits.

My cousin is in the Border Patrol; he says he wouldn't trust 90% of the young dudes who he works with. After reading the comments on here, I am inclined to agree with him.

Someone might try to make the argument "but they were stuck in traffic," that may be so, but if you didn't get out of your vehicles with guns drawn the suspects may not have fired. Police CHOSE that scenario to engage, it was wrong.
Also look at the circumstances that lead up to it / they first shot a woman in the head, that alone shows that they are willing to kill to get away and you have to assume they will kill everyone that they could to get away. It this went further who knows how many could die.

Nah, it was the cops getting out of their vechiles and engaging the truck that escalated things. You asked earlier if they should have just let them drive forever, and the answer is yes. We passed a law here in CA because high speed chases were causing death to other motorists. What we found is that using helicopters and following behind works even better. Sooner or later they run out of gas.

And having a hostage should make them even more cautious. We've had quite a few live chases with that exact scenario, and in no way would CHP rick the life of the hostage or bystander with such a negligent move. Using occupied cars as cover is beyond the pale, robbers arne't going to only hit engine blocks, especially when the cops aren't staitnary and moving around the vechiles. Jewelry was stolen.......that's nothing compared to two human lives. You don't save a hostage, by shooting them dead.

You don't preserve lives by bumrushing armed suspects on a crowded highway though. These cops were clearly poorly trained, and the UPS driver was shot by them. I also don't see how they wouldn't know about the hostage since this was a live police chase. One of the first things cops do is access potential hostages.

No one died in the robbery. 2 people died when cops rushed the truck. There's a reason why cops keep their distance in a chase like this.

Oh, I don't disagree with you. Approaching the vehicle at that location was a really bad move given the situation with the hostage and innocents around. I wont refute that at all. My comment is just in response to the cops returning fire.

They used deadly physical force on her, that’s all they need to know. If they used it on one person there is a high chance they will do it again. That first victim is very lucky to be alive after being shot in the head.

Cops were in their cars, they got out because they thought the truck was stopped, and stupidly went in guns drawn. Gee....I wonder how this will turn out? Approaching armed suspects who already got into a shootout at the store, like this made zero sense. Only people who were sitting ducks are the people driving home on that highway

Rewatch the video. The cops admit they went in because the truck was stopped.

You're literally pointing out why is was dumb to bumrush the UPS truck. Considering the suspects already showed they were willing to fire their guns, and that they had a hostage....you don't bumrush them in the middle of a crowded highway. Jewelry can be replaced, they have insurance for that crap. Lives can't.

What outcome did the cops expect?

Like I said earlier, if your plan is to go in, guns blazing to quickly put an end to them/the chase, why the fuk do you casually wait for the truck to come to a stop in a crowd of civilian vehicles? If your plan is to go in firing like that, at least ram or block the UPS truck in with the dozens of cars that were chasing, in one of the countless stretches of clear road they showed in the video. No matter what training or protocol or whatever says, they were careless and reckless.

IMO they seized on the wrong opportunity and failed to act during the right opportunities. That's how you boil this entire thing down.

this is the single most salient post in this thread. tbh there's nothing more left to say except to acknowledge this as a tragedy in which poor police tactics were involved in innocent and unnecessary loss of life and to hope that it be used as an example of what not to do moving forward.

I don't want they walking up period in that siutation, certianly not behind occipued cars. In CA they sure wouldn't, CHP handles it differently. It was a 20 mile chase, why choose the absolute worse spot to do this? With a hostage no less. Lucky only one bystander got killed with such recklessness.

I don’t see it as a bum rush and more setting up a perimeter around the suspected vehicle. It had nothing to do with the jewelry and more about preserving lives if they hit away. But then things went to shít

There's no situation where a "split second decision" should be half a police department mag dumping into a truck with a hostage, surrounded by a large group of civilians.

Yes and no. While it wasn't an ideal opportunity, the truck came to a stop and the driver got up so the chase had ended. The opportunity they ended up with was forced upon them, but yes they should have taken advantage of other opportunities earlier. It was the decisions made after the truck stopped though that is the problem. If you're forced into that position, in heavy traffic and with a hostage, there needs to be some level of care and caution and there was absolutely none.

Police escalated at the wrong moment. See it happen to often. Chasing the adrenaline rush rather then acting according.

UPS opened fired because the officers decided to rush them.

The situation wasn't even evaluated. It was go go go cowboy ****.

Embarrassing tbh.
