I know it was a terrible situation to be in for everyone involved, but there is no excuse for how the police handled that. Normally I try to side with the police looking at situations from their perspective, but this one is inexcusable. You have to be a down right bootlicker to be defending this chit.

They knew the suspects were armed and were already shooting out of the vehicle, so that should be cue to fall back, at least from a far distance, and let the chopper take over. I know it was a hostage situation, but you take your chances with giving the suspects an opportunity to flee and them letting the hostage live rather than getting into a massive shootout in rush hour traffic like it's some kind of old western film. You have 20+ cops using civilians as cover and opening fire when most of them don't even have a shot. Not surprised a bystander was shot and killed besides the hostage. They're lucky there weren't more casualties. Just pure incompetence and recklessness

In the vast majority of them, while the chase is happening, the police units are yards back from the pursuit vehicle. Yesterday, that didn't happen. Real talk, the criminals were robbers trying to flee with wealth they could later live to enjoy. They weren't looking to go out mass shooting innocents in some sort of jihad. They were probably hoping to escape with their prize without having to shoot anyone, just as I assume the cops wished the same, but cops decided to make them feel cornered at the worst possible time. I expect criminals to be stupid, but you would like to hope the police force would act a little smarter.

This was a failed hostage rescue done by officers on the fly during a chit hitting the fan situation. There were bad tactics and questionable tactics, but acting like the police purposely shot the hostage to get a paid vacation is idiotic.Pursuit with gunfire and a hostage are a little different than your average pursuit. This is something 99.99% of cops will never experience and probably 99% don't ever get training on, specifically. But you would want to follow this pursuit closer to get more eyes inside the vehicle and be able to react and go into hostage rescue quicker, if needed. General practice is you want to stay as close to the hostage(s) as possible.

Obviously you're not supposed to use civilians as shields. Most of the training these cops have done though probably has taught them to advance while utilizing cover/concealment. When you're in a firefight, you resort to your training, this was just muscle memory and training. Can almost guarantee the cops at the time were just advancing from one cover/concealment to another. They were not "using civilians as shields", that's just hindsight coming into play, they were using the vehicles to try and gain an advantage in the shooting. Now sure, you can argue that those two things are the same, and the only difference is how they're framed, and you'd have a fair point, but they're both also totally different depending on your mindset.
