It's pretty crazy. If you watch a movie from the 80s, the fat kid is like an average sized kid nowadays.

I remember in the 90s in school, each grade had 1 or 2 fat kids. Now every other kid has moobs.

Yeah, but my body has never cooperated with this.

I would bet that the median weight is quite a bit lower.

Actually kind of interesting. More so than this thread usually is.

I was a 70s fat kid. 80s too. Look at pics of me from then now and I don't "look fat".

IDK...do believe that genetics contribute though based on personal experience. Ate the same and moved around the same as other kids but was always chubby. Spent a lot of time outside, played sports, rode bikes, very limited screen time and practically no snacking at all before age 10 or so...was still the fat kid.

I was also growing faster than most other kids and as a parent now I recognize kids have a tendency to get chubby before getting taller. Got near my adult height at age 12.

Being shamed about it wasn't helpful at all. If anything shaming helped push me from chubby to obese around age 13. Because f*ck it- if people are going to be hateful to you because you don't look like a couple of McD's french fries shoved into a pair of jeans might as well eat all the things. Going to take a verbal beat down either way.

People who say that fat shaming will "cure" the obesity epidemic don't realize that fat shaming is not the only thing that has changed in the years since the obesity crisis has begun. It's sort of just an ancillary social effect: when obesity became less and less rare, fewer and fewer people could afford to point fingers without getting an "et tu?". Fat shaming isn't all that helpful and can be counterproductive because people who feel disempowered will just give up--which is what's happening. Plus, then, you get the swing in the other direction where obese people get angry and rebel against shaming by asserting themselves too far in the other direction, proclaiming obesity a soruce of pride and identity, etc.

Which is silly: obesity is a (potentially) transient state, not an identity.

I think we should really look at other systemic shifts, like the food industry, cultural norms that have decentered eating home-cooked meals, portion sizes, between-meal snacking frequency, etc. Most traditional cultures have built-in controls on food consumption BECAUSE humans have evolved to prefer overeating. Deviating from that and letting humans freely eat ad lib from ultra-processed calorie-dense stuff is the obvious culprit. How to fix that isn't clear.

But saying the decrease in shaming is to blame is reversing cause and effect.

The problem is that people know that--they try to just "eat less" but then may eat too much less and get overwhelmingly hungry, or may eat all of the wrong things and become unhealthy, etc. Obviously, eating fewer calories is the solution. Achieving that is the problem. At least on a population level.

You misunderstood me. I was agreeing with your post, and stated that it was indeed how you cure obesity.

The part about you shutting you mouth was just because I was tired of listening to you.

People in North America have the highest average body mass in the world, according to a 2012 study. More than 70 percent of the population falls into the overweight-to-obese ranges.

Same.

Not that I didn't sincerely try many many times before to take it off and keep it off. I would stick to something and lose 20ish pounds most times before stalling out, getting frustrated, and eventually drifting back into old patterns.

It's hard to do and a never ending process.

It's not even food. It's sugar and alcohol. Everyone thinks it's cool to go out and get wasted. In reality, the sh!t just makes you a fat alcoholic.

And soft drinks are terrible for you.

Also don't understand how people get SO fat. I hate eating. I have to force myself to eat in order to bulk. Hate cooking, hate meal prepping, hate eating. I could legit eat 1-2 small meals a day and be satisfied (and crazy skinny).

As in "fat on misc" crew?

I don't know what my FFM is. I honestly don't think I'm that built/muscled up.

Maybe we are outliers. At 5'6 or 7ish and 160 and just not that big.

Yeah I remember measuring my gut at 39" when I was permabulked to 260+, bloated to hell with special supps and feeling like I was going to die just doing 5 mins on the treadmill.

It's amazing that a woman 100+ pounds lighter could have the same waist size, how does that even work?

The women on here lift and some are not natty, so you can't compare them with the average. But most American women don't lift weights.

I've lived in Asia. Drinking culture is huge over there. After work go get some Korean BBQ eat a ton and drink a ton. Yet 99.9% of people are skinny/small. lol

But then again portion sizes are tiny compared to the West and you have to walk everywhere

I only saw one overweight female my entire time there. (All she ate was rice)
