why DB laterals kind of suck

Made this video for some people asking about why I never do DB laterals anymore and always use cables. Figured I'd share for anyone interested in hearing the logic behind it

It's nerdy and sciencey, but pretty damn legit imo. And no, I'm not saying DBs are a waste of time, simply saying they're not optimal. It's about a minute and a half long, give it a watch before going bat**** with comments

Very informative. Cables definitely have their benefits to stay in that effective ROM.

I'd recommend not wearing those pants

The thing with cables/bands/variable resistance is that the chit is waaaaay more fatiguing that you think it is and super fukking effective. Putting bands and cables into training is like starting new again.

Dialing in cables and bands for a linear tension respective to available torque is never a bad strategy.

Even better are the machines where push with your tricep because it eliminates one more joint that causes power loss

I'm doing band shoulders right now to develop my shoulders. My shoulders are weak from cross country. Need to get them bigger and stronger.

Absolutely. A lot of massive/ strong bodybuilders that actually train hard are incorporating that stuff a lot. People just don't see it cuz their heads are still too far up zyzz's ass lol

This can be addressed a bit by doing leaning laterals, but IMHO cables are still much better.

Didn't watch the vid OP, but did I get this right?

As an aside last week I saw a couple dudes doing leaning cable raises. LMFAO. Classic case of seeing something, not understanding why it is done, then copying it. There's no need to lean while doing lateral cable raises as there is already near constant resistance throughout the movement. I LOL'd.
Yup spot on man. Yeah more and more you see people doing exercises just for the sake of doing something different rather than putting any logic behind it. If you can't answer why then why TF are you doing it

I don't feel chit every time I do cable laterals.

But I get a great response & feel & burn & fatigue when I uses DB's.

Trick is most people are obsessed with adding weight. Studies show you get just as much hypertrophy from 15-30 reps as 8-12, as long as you're going to failure.

If it's heavy, I cheat. Light, can work out the feel rep by rep & really work it. 25-12 reps. Cable has never done anything for me.

Adding weight and using too much weight are two different things. You need to add weight (progressively) if you want to grow. much easier to progress a cable stack than it is jumping up 5 lbs on DB.

Personally I can use a fukload more tension on lying cuff laterals than DB. And a heavy set of 8-10 can last a minute

I remember some time ago when you posted an instagram video of cable cuff laterals while lying on a bench. I've been doing them this past mesocycle and love 'em.

One DB variation I have also been doing is something I caught from Menno Henselmans that he callsbutterfly laterals. I take it one step further than his example and add a slower eccentric phase to a near pause just in that middle range performing something close to an iron cross by a gymnist, then let it come down fast enough to get the momentum he talks about at the bottom. It's nice option, especially when cables aren't available.

Good vid, going to start incorporating these. For the longest I never got why people added chains to bench press, then I learned it was for increased tension throughout the motion , same concept here. I've stepped back from front delts as mine are overly developed , any tips for rear delts? I do sitting face pulls making sure my elbows are above 90degrees. But hard to incorporate much else.

Reverse Pec dec is my favorite. I would do a rear delt row or rear delt pulldown over a face pull personally. Both exercises are a shorter ROM than a lot of people make them out to be to actually keep the tension on rear delts

Older video, I think my execution on both has improved but you get the point
