Derek from More Plates More Dates GOAT 3D delts claims the secret to juicy delts is heavy af progressive overload DB lateral raises (besides the orange juice). Treat progression on lateral raises as you would a compound movement. I’ll continue with that advice, but thanks opie

dont really care much for lateral raises but i use banded lateral raises to warm up the shoulders sometimes, just simply take a band (I would buy something with around 15 to 35 lbs of tension at the near maximal tension), put it under your feet and take some 5 lb dumbbells or some chit, grab both the band and the dumbbells with your hands and go to work. or just use the band itself which is what i do cuz im lazy. those trx handles will work too.

cable machines are often crowded so I don't really bother

Derr I never said I couldn't feel it with DB, I said they kind of suck

I could make you "burn" with 10 lb dumbbells with pauses and tempos. That doesn't correlate to stimulating new hypertrophy over time.

Doing just the top half of the movement does make it harder , but you're still completely ignoring the bottom half of the movement where you have the opportunity to create the most tension

I didn't know who that was, but i googled it..... Pretty sure the secrets to his delts are copious amounts of exogenous hormones andany type of progressively overloaded side delt exercise lmao

Do you not think i treat this exercise as any other and progressively overload it? It's simply a more efficient variation of lateral raise. DB aren't magically better. It's also much easier to progress through a cable stack than it is making a 5 lb jump on DB. You're going to hit a wall pretty quick

You don't need cuffs, especially single arm. Doing the lying version With handles is a pain because they run into each other at the bottom

I hear these arguments and I dont refute them but the bottom line is; When I do dumbell laterals my delts burn and swell up. When I do cable stuff its not quite as intense. I dont have an answer as to why, its just one of those things.

Same with bench press which people have been trying to convince me does nothing for chest but is mainly a tricep and shoulder exercise. I dont argue the physics but when I bench my chest swells like nothing else and the difference in my pecs when I am benching and when Im not is irrefutable.

Try doing the lateral raises higher with dbs. They work my shoulders like no other movement.

your infraspinatus is doing the majority of the work until you're about halfway up and is why if you want to do laterals with cables or db's you shouldn't be going all the way down and only focusing on the top range of the motion

and with the loading profile of cables your delt is going to be strongest at the top because the ROM of the cable starts to lose it's power curve and is on its easiest point where your delt would be the most contracted at the top with free weight. If you want to test it out do only the top 1/3rd of the movement with cables to failure then try it with db's and you'll be amazed at how much harder the db isolates the delt at peak contraction. Delts need a very very small ROM to hit them optimally imo, and that goes for all heads of the delts

the way to fix the power curve with cables is to do them leaning but to me it's way harder to not bring your more back into it by doing them leaning

Definitely appreciate actual logic behind an argument.

You lost be a bit with the delts being strongest at the top. Pretty much every muscle is weakest at the fully contracted range, no? The example in the video isn't exactly how i would set them up, you can certainly adjust the load at the top depending on how you set the cable height.

Definitely to each their own, i just personally get much more out of a 2-3 sets with the cables vs DB.

with cables its really easy to make it where you somewhat shrug the weight at the top bringing it closer to you and making the peak of the weight about halfway up rather than at the top. Watch the stack of weights move when most guys do them and the weight won't move after about halfway for a lot of people because they aren't doing a full arcing motion and instead just move their arm from A to B. I think you've found how to avoid that by doing your laying laterals with cables but that's the issues a lot of guys have with cables is they can't keep their shoulder as the main driver at the top of the movement. I think you can use either pretty much interchangeably just depends on which one you can isolate delts with better

But I do need a low pulley, and I only have a high pulley in the garage, lol. I think I've got some ankle cuffs somewhere that came with a band pack I got. I'll throw them in the bag for Friday's gymtime. Gotta maximize the angle of the dangle, right babe?

Oh yeah that makes sense. When I do them with people I always cue them to drive out rather than up

Those particular straps are a yoke strap made to hang on a barbell for yoke walks.

Cuff laterals are one of the best things I stole from you. I love them. I rarely do DB laterals nowadays unless it's part of a giant set finisher or something.

Coming from the most backward poster on this site with the least insight into any topic of any poster, I’m sure he can take this criticism as a compliment.
