IT must drive Americans mad that the two top HW boxers are British

It must drive Americans absolutely mad:

-400 million Americans
-biggest economy in the world
-meant to be go getters
-millions of boxers
-used to have all the heavy weight champs

Just like football, when Americans get into sports where there's plenty of international competition, they cant cut it. Stick to fake sports like American hand egg, basketball and baseball.

I wonder if guys like Tyson or Ali would have been champs at all, if the Americans have to face more British fighters.

British boxers have largely been second-rate throughout history despite the sport having originated in England, especially when it came to the heavyweights. I remember when people had their hopes set on second-tier fighters like Frank Bruno. Lennox Lewis was great, but he was barely British and many Brits never really embraced him when he was on the throne. Naseem Hamed was a hell of a fighter as well, but he was a featherweight and his dominance was short lived.

Anyways, American heavyweights have been fairly lackluster for a few decades now. Eastern Europeans dominated for almost two decades. Now, it's finally the UK's turn to shine. Good for them.

there’s been a drought in talent for American boxing. most kids would rather play football, lacrosse or basketball. the US isn’t too bad at wrestling though

Imagine if Americans cared about boxing enough to divert talent away from the NFL/NBA. There wouldn't be a britbong in the top 50 except that one gangly gypsy. Lebron would be 100-0.

Boxing is nice but it's an outdated combat sport. The Fury-Wilder rematch was so frustrating to watch because they clinched every three punches that where thrown and looked like they didn't know what to do until the ref sperated them again. It's a pretty limited combat sport.

Inventing a sport over 100 years ago has very little relevance as to how good a country should be today... what matters is the size of the talent pool.

@OP I doubt anyone really cares though, Americans have had great boxers throughout history aswell.

You’re looking at it the wrong way. Boxing was never supposed to be a “complete” form of fighting. It’s not like people didn’t know what wrestling or kicking was when boxing was invented. They were just seen as unsportsmanlike, just as certain actions weren’t allowed in a duel. Is basketball a limited sport because you can’t just carry the ball? Is soccer limited because you can’t use your hands? Rules make a sport.

Prince was a Fuk'n FREAK! The angles he could throw punches from doesn't even make sense from a stability/balance point of view.... It a sad indictment of the US boxing system that's allowed the US to go from the dominant boxing nation with so many illustrious champions, boxing gyms and venues to just another boxing nation.

The ground roots support has simply died, being an Amateur US boxer now means you get little to no support, compared to other countries that fund their young boxers, giving them access to state of the art training facilities, physio's, nutritionists and a salary.

But you still produce some fine young fighter like Shakur Stevenson, though unfortunately he'll probably never be the star his talents deserve as most US sports fans would rather watch NFL, NBA or perhaps even MLS than watching boxing.

It was kind of sad to see Deontay Wilder in Vegas come out to a hostile, pro Brit, crowd in his own country. Could you imagine Tyson being booed in his prime fighting on US soil?

In the UK boxing is as big as it's ever been. Joshua is the biggest star the UK has ever witnessed, even after losing, his rematch drew near record numbers. On fight night any pub showing it, in my town was full to capacity and had to turn people away at the door, you have 40-50 people standing outside, peering through the windows trying to see the fight, there was that much interest in the fight.

In contrast most US fans that supported Wilder in the rematch will likely ditch him now and go back to watching other sports. There simply isn't the same interest in boxing in the US as before as the US boxing system couldn't compete with more organised and unified sporting bodies that were able to grow their sports popularity.
