Anybody who looks into Coronavirus and thinks the fearmongering purely boils down to trying to get Trump out of office fits is either an idiot, a trump supporter or most likely both.

The world exists beyond America. People are dying. Just because the last virus outbreaks have been contained doesn't mean this will be.

I know for trump supporters the idea of examining things critically is difficult (how else would he get elected based on lie after lie?), but did a country lock down their biggest cities and effectively ruin their export trade during the last outbreak?

Smfh.

Virus' don't know race, religion or political leanings. You're all a potential host.

The fearmongering is partly because that is just what the media does these days....hypes anything and everything, and partly because they want to tie this to Trump, a slowing economy, which they hope then leads to him being defeated.

The amount of people being infected and dying is not worth the type of reaction we are seeing from various media sources and politicians.

This country is full of incompetent fuks
Interesting and thank you.

Will be interesting to see if the amount of cases goes up when more testing kits arrive.

Though even if it does, it still does not justify anywhere near the hype that the virus is receiving from the media.

do you know how many people die from other things tho, like cancer, car accidents, suicide, medications, drugs, obesity...the list goes on. This is a drop in the bucket...people in china are already back to work and recovering. More than likely the warm weather will kill this thing off. I am worried about the markets tho because wallstreet always overreacts and we could see a very slow recovery since elections are right around the corner.

By the way, the test itself is almost $4000, and a positive result meaning someone had to go into forced isolation will cost them over $100,000, so there are a lot of people who won't get tested, at least not until a week or so after symptoms, by that time they've exposed thousands of people.

Higher infection and fatality rate vs. the flu.

Well as I said in one of the stock market threads, if the markets had been flat to slightly down the past 2 years, it would not be selling off like this. But because it was up so much? It was looking for any reason to sell off for a correction.

That being said, I think most of the real sell off is due to the possibility of Bernie possibly being elected POTUS. That happening would put wall street into a zombie like state.

The real issue is loss of productivity and lack of preparedness. USA has a large older population. USA does not have enough room in hospitals when every boomer gets pneumonia and goes severe or critical. Also, if average people get sick, they donโ€™t go to work. They donโ€™t make money, the company doesnโ€™t make money, and productivity drops. This can easily light off the recession, which we saw a foreshadowing of these previous days.

i agree, last year was a 30% growth in the stock market..ridiculously high. right now we've seen a 13% decline ..i wouldnt be surprised if we see 15% more...but once we hit a certain bottom people will buy it back up...prices will just be too good...i myself will be buying some good dividend stocks..i just think the recent buy back was a bit more premature...especially considering how premature the virus is in the US...my dad taught me one thing about stocks..he said you can lose alot more trying to time the bottom than waiting for it to correct and getting in on the way back up

The general sentiment Iโ€™m reading everywhere is that investors are waiting for a re-entry point. Even if the market was overextended before, the risk/reward is there now, just a matter of finding the right time, and that will depend on risk tolerance - donโ€™t want to buy in a dead cat bounce.

I was lining up all my numbers trying to make a solid argument.

But letโ€™s be real. In 2 weeks we will all know if itโ€™s something thatโ€™s going to send millions to already overwhelmed hospitals, and tank our economy for a year or two.

And Iโ€™m saying the above hoping to be completely wrong. The media is hyping this up without the numbers. But the numbers (R0 and case fatality rate in Wuhan vs rest of China) are actually scary.

True, we need more time (weeks) to assess the situation accurately. Right now we donโ€™t even know how some of the cases got infected, and donโ€™t have index cases.

Itโ€™s difficult to say what the market is pricing in right now. There will be many more cases, itโ€™s just a matter of how well we can control the spread, and how fast we can develop a vaccine (6mo+ Iโ€™m guessing).

The fatality rate is higher than flu, but itโ€™s still very low. And probably close to zero for healthy individuals.

It might not be until next winter that it rallies again and wrecks the world though.

Maybe but hopefully by then there would be a vaccine and better treatment plans for it.

Kind of cold and selfish to say but Iโ€™m not worried about actually getting sick or dying from it. But more about how many years itโ€™d take to recover if we have to hospitalize people at the rate that Wuhan did if it becomes widespread. We also have a much bigger fraction of our population thatโ€™s over 65 than China. I donโ€™t think we would need to hospitalize people at the rate they did but mostly bc I just donโ€™t trust numbers the Chinese government is publicizing.

Itโ€™s only really cold and selfish if you think we should do absolutely nothing to control the spread, just because weโ€™d be fine and recover. You didnโ€™t mention anything about other people dying, only the economy, so maybe you are.

Survival. When the jungle tears itself down and builds itself into something new. Guys like you and me, we end up dead. Doesnโ€™t really mean anything. Or, if we happen to live through it, well that doesnโ€™t mean anything either.

If it keeps spreading as quickly as it has been over the past few weeks then it has the possibility of becoming an apocalyptic event.

If the virus infects a large enough population, all kinds of gene mutations occur.

Don't forget, viruses are not bacteria. They are DNA/RNA that can change depending who they infect.

Give a virus that spreads so easily millions of chances to mutate and that's all she wrote.

Because it's a new virus that we don't have a cure for yet. Ebola was much worse because the morality rate was extremely high and would've been disastrous if it started infecting people on a global scale. The corona virus is probably similar to the flu, and highly contagious. But it seems like only elderly people/children/or those with health issues are dying to it. It's not going to be a plague that wipes us out though like how some are freaking out about

I seem to remember there was a massive response to those, and people being proactive about it saved many lives. Just because you do nothing doesn't mean these problems just fix themselves.
