As I said before, you should remove the dangerous misinformation that young, healthy people are unlikely to contract this virus. Young, healthy people are unlikely to become sick enough to end up in the ICU and die, and people with no symptoms are unlikely to spread it, but itis absolutely falseto suggest that otherwise healthy people will not readily incubate the disease, go about their lives with mild symptoms, and spread it to others without realizing what they've done. That is what happened on the Nile cruise, and what has happened in many other cases.
This is just one incident. My main post was simply pointing out the survival rate for those people who are young and healthy are much less likely to contract or die from it is far less than anyone who is elderly or immunocompromised.

Masks are so critical that Germany and South Korea have banned exports to preserve their stockpiles, and South Korea has implemented rationing.
If someone can show me some legit info and sources for the N95 masks I would appreciate it. What I'm seeing on Amazon is a lot of scams of people selling N95 masks that are obvious dustmasks.

I'm willing to change the info in the first thread to clarify the points you brought up and mention the N95 mask, but I don't think everyone needs one. If people are in particular jobs - like healthcare - where they might be more likely to be contact with a coronavirus patient (or the extremely overly paranoid). But, so far all I've seen are completely bogus N95 masks on the market. I still contend a dusk mask is only going to prevent you from spreading the virus you have from other people, but I've missed reading some of the studies and I could be wrong.

Our 24/7 news cycle has to cover something, and the coronavirus is just their latest attempt to amp up the ratings. Like I mentioned, 40k people die from the fluEVERY MONTHand you don't hear anyone talking about that. The MSM's main objective is spreading FUD.

Can you post the study where you got the information? This sets off my BS meter to level 9/10.

Btw, I made a post with a list of alternative to corporate media that anyone can access, along with live links where you can watch the broadcasts online. Some of the media sources I disagree with now (I made this post in 2017) - some of the links may also be broken. You can find that list here:
https://bitbin.it/1ay7EMdC/

You can also check out my breaking news Twitter list here:

I could make a Twitter list on the COVID-19 virus, but I'm not sure who all to add. If any has any suggestions on good (reliable, no BS) Twitter accounts that are posting up to date info on COVID-19, let me know the name of the account.

You got a source for the bolded that is not from the CDC with a timestamp in the last month? We all know you don't because the reasons masks exist is to prevent the spread, bidirectionally. Our supplies are low and so the CDC is attempting to conserve supplies for health care professionals. You can't come up with a peer reviewed study showing that masks (be it surgical or N95) have NO benefit in preventing spread to you from another person. If that was the case then no health care professional in any hospital would ever use them because they ONLY help if the patient is wearing them. Right.... Right Pogue?

So you're planning on wearing this getting through your entire working day? This picture is obviously meant for healthcare workers.
Oh wait, this is the source that actually shows they are recommended and they help prevent the spread from others to you... strange, it must be some magical property of being a health care worker that makes them effective. Also, with regards to the bold.... you can't seriously claim to be some highly qualified critical reader with exceptional comprehension and bs detection, and then completely miss the point of this study and my post. You want links to certified NIOSH rated N95 masks, when they source literally states that you don't NEED an N95 rated mask to reduce the risk of droplet transmission. A simple surgical mask works just as well as an N95. You are flat out wrong. This is why I am so glad I live in a free country with the second amendment. Unsure why this sets off your BS meter. Many types of microorgasms carried in liquids tend to die when their carrier droplet dries out, and refrigerating a microorgasm to keep it alive is fairly basic. Coronaviruses are generally encased in fat capsules which break down in hot temperatures, unlike protein capsules. With that said, higher humidity may also deter droplets from lingering in the air, so dry air may be a double-edged sword.

You realize its possible to be attacking both the substance of someone's argument AND the person themselves? I.e. I think Pogue is out of line and egotystical and I also take great issue with the assertion that masks ONLY prevent spread from you to others? Lets talk about N95 masks with exhale valves for example? Do those do anything to stop you from spreading droplets? NO. Are they NIOSH N95 rated for use by healthcare workers as proper PPE. YES.

This isn't HTC/LTC misc fun and games. This is serious and it has global impact. Get it right or GTFO

I generally agree with you (and fukkin Pogue), but seems extremely illogical to say masks ONLY protect the people outside the mask wearer and not the mask. Where is the study that says masks are useless? Even if that WERE the case, given that we don't know if we are infected or not, wouldn't they actually prevent the spread unknowingly by protecting everyone around that has a weaker immune system? A 20 year old unknowingly infected with COVID-19, better or worse to wear a mask? Doing groceries, coming into contact with tons of people, taking the bus, etc. He doesn't fukkin know who has it, or even if he himself does, none of us know. The young and healthy presenting as asymptomatic can be vectors spreading it everywhere, because the attitude that-"uh masks don't prevent the spread."

Edit, I realize I used a fallacy here (false choice), but consider the main point pls, don't have time to rewrite.

Which is why people should be frequently washing their hands and not touching their face. Best function of the mask in most scenarios is to prevent you from touching your mouth and nose directly.

I can bet that once COVID-19 starts to die down, people are not going to keep up with the same precautions and hysteria they did with the next flu season, even if the flu STILL kills more people per year.

I will refrain from letting my temper get the best of me, but this conversation belongs in this thread. I would also appreciate it if you followed your own rules. You ask for peer review sources and then post a youtube video?

I posted a peer reviewed article that compared the efficacy of N95 to surgical masks in preventing the spread of infection via droplets. Why would that study exist if surgical masks "will not prevent transmission". Again, you are wrong.

Can you explain why proper PPE for health care workers includes a mask if it "will not prevent transmission"? Please don't cop out and say "N95" only because I already posted a source that states N95 and surgical masks are both effective.

Can you explain how an N95 mask with an exhale valve worn by someone infected would prevent the spread of droplets/infection if the valve is allowing unfiltered air to be ejected?

Can you explain why an N95 mask with an exhale valve would still be considered proper PPE if the only benefit of a mask is preventing you from spreading the droplets?

Your OP is incorrect. It is not your job, nor my job, to ensure that a consumer buys an NIOSH N95 rated mask. It is NOT okay, to state that masks do not help at all. We agree that there is more to it than JUST a mask. Hand washing, doffing technique, goggles, there are many aspects to reducing the likelihood of infection. But you are blatantly ignoring the facts regarding masks. 1) If you want to be exacting, then simply state, "Be sure your masks are N95 rated by NIOSH". 2) This would be overkill because there has been a source provided that indicates a surgical mask is effective at reducing droplet transmission.

Can you please indicate where LukeLissen was stating that you should keep your human body warm to help prevent the spread? This post, which is the base assertion in question here, is stating that you should raise the thermostats you have control over, as the increased surface temps will reduce the lifespan of the virus particles outside of the body. ANumber1 then provided a source to back this assertion up. Why are you now construing the topic to be about the human body?

    Uwutm8?

I understand that this is frustrating and that you're trying to do a good thing, but you specifically asked for a source for a post about reducing the spread of the infection from cross-contaminated surfaces by keeping them warm, as in businesses, homes, hospitals, grocery stores, etc.

I provided you a source that was literally published in the Journal of Hospital Infection, scientists compiling known data so that it would specifically would be available at a glance for people caught up in this situation.

"Nah, that's not what I meant!"

As for the Egyptian Nile cruise and your "yeah, but that's just one incident" reply, it isn't. It's an example. This is how outbreaks are happening. The attorney in NY - who was not elderly, although had preexisting conditions - is now the vector for 28 other cases through both direct (his body) and indirect (surfaces he has contaminated) contact before he realized he needed help. He also infected the person who drove him to the hospital. All are now isolated and schools and synagogues have had to shutter for deep cleanings, with those who crossed paths with the other cases, including people who randomly attended a funeral at the synagogue, asked to self-quarantine to see if they have contracted it, as well. Seemingly young and healthy people, as I've told you from the beginning, are very much at risk to contract and potentially spread this virus if exposed, albeit not to die from it.

This is starting to look like you are deliberately ignoring facts which do not fit a comforting narrative.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

You're right, my delivery is completely compromised right now because I'm livid. I am phrasing things in a way that probably sound like gotcha attempts. It is 100% not my goal. I stopped posting in the OG thread because I was tired of the back and forth and there was blatant mod intervention in an unbiased manner. I would be happy to step back into silence if the OP is corrected. People have a tenancy to "appeal to authority". Someone was able to subvert free speech and get these threads split apart, with a condescending title slapped on for everyone who is taking this seriously. Fine by me. But if that's the case, then the INFORMATION thread, needs to be accurate.

Thanks for the reminder, it's good advice, delivery is everything.

    EDIT:
I briefly posted a link to a CDC guide for high risk populations and then deleted it. It was potentially misleading as it said to buy supplies and prepare now, but it was aimed at higher risk populations.

Dude, I'm not going to argue with you all day about surgical masks and sh!t. I posted a video that made the argument perfectly clear and has peer reviewed studies linked in the description. Here, I'll post them.
    [ul]
  • Influenza Virus Aerosols in Human Exhaled Breath: Particle Size, Culturability, and Effect of Surgical Masks

  • Surgical Mask vs N95 Respirator for Preventing Influenza Among Health Care Workers

  • Do N95 respirators provide 95% protection level against airborne viruses, and how adequate are surgical masks?

  • A Quantitative Assessment of the Efficacy of Surgical and N95 Masks to Filter Influenza Virus in Patients with Acute Influenza Infection

  • Flu mask: Should I wear one? - Mayo Clinic

  • N95 Respirators and Surgical Masks (Face Masks) - FDA

  • [/ul]
Can you explain why proper PPE for health care workers includes a mask if it "will not prevent transmission"? Please don't cop out and say "N95" only because I already posted a source that states N95 and surgical masks are both effective.

Can you explain how an N95 mask with an exhale valve worn by someone infected would prevent the spread of droplets/infection if the valve is allowing unfiltered air to be ejected?

Can you explain why an N95 mask with an exhale valve would still be considered proper PPE if the only benefit of a mask is preventing you from spreading the droplets?
Again, it's obvious you're beyond the point of rationale and reason and will only adapt to your side of the argument, regardless of evidence prevented otherwise. So, I'm done arguing with you about face masks here bro. If you make any more posts in this thread that I consider out of context in anyway, I'm going to go ahead and delete them. I suggest you make your way over to the other thread.

I mean, that's literally useless information. Yes, I was wrong - the poster made his statement like he was saying for people to keep warm. But regardless, keep warm - in what what? Turn your heat in your house and to what temperature?

That's really completely unhelpful. It's like your mom telling you to keep warm when you go out in the cold.
